Ask SDF: Which Current Consoles Support Wireless Gaming?
Every week we’ll be featuring a reader question from the SDF Mailbags so send in any videogame-related questions you may have using the contact link to the right. This week reader Quintus writes in:
‘I’ve recently just setup a local wireless connection at my apartment. I’m thinking of purchasing a gaming system but I want to hook it up to the internet for online play and downloads but I don’t want a mess of wires from my living room running to my modem. Can you tell me which current consoles and handhelds support wireless?’
Good question Quintus, and no doubt one that is on the lips of many people wanting to enjoy their consoles online from the comfort of their living room. Luckily for you we have a list of consoles that have WiFi (wireless) built in out of the box:
- PS3
- PSP
- Wii
- DS
Yes that’s right even handhelds like DS and PSP have WiFi built in.
XBox 360 doesn’t have WiFi built in but all you have to do is give the world’s most profitable corporation another $100 and this elegant item could be hanging out of your 360 in no time:

Oh and look at that – you get a nice $5 discount from Amazon.

Hahaha, gold again! You kids make my day. Make sure to keep good on your promise to publish these ‘genuine’ letters from your readers, asking your completely unbiased site questions about what system to purchase.
I myself often write letters to Fox asking which television station offers the best programming.
Well the did mentioned the DS and Wii, and at since the 20 GB is discontinued, they still have a point if a person wants a wireless out of box system.
Oooh. I’ve got a question too.
“I don’t have a wireless network at my house, and I was wondering what gaming console I should purchase that forces me pay for WiFi, even though I don’t want or need it. Can you help me?”
Classic SDF.
I am glad I sold my Shitty Xbox 360, I knew when I bought the system that Microsoft would keep making me Buy all this bullshit that should have been free. Xbox 360 = Dreamcast
I doubt that was found in your mailbags, the only things you would find there would be things along the lines of “you dumbasses suck” and “Enlarge your penis today”
I, like Karachi, have a question for you. I am looking for a console that allows me to play good games, as opposed to ones that are just mediocre. I would like it if this console did not have a shoe-horned in motion sensor thats only purpose is to turn otherwise good games into terrible ones.
YET ANOTHER REASON WHY SONY SUPPORTS OBESITY.
1: blu ray, only sony fans are so lazy that they can’t get up an change to Disc 2.
2: you don’t even need to get off your fat ass and connect it to your router for a faster connection then wi fi!
@Blasphemy.
If the 360=Dreamcast, then the 360 would be one of the best consoles out there with great games and a wonderful internet service. Oh wait…
Hi, I was wondering which system would provide me with the most space to fit the games on? As everyone knows, more space = better games.

On the same token, the PS3 is not High Definition gaming out of the box.
I know, you’re asking, “How can you say that Blackhaven?” Well, let me explain.
The PS3 only comes with COMPOSITE cables. You have to go spend $100 on HDMI cables to get HD gaming on your PS3. Yes, you HAVE to do this. You MUST spend another $100 just to get HD gaming on your PS3 going. However, the 360 comes with Component cables and you get HD gaming out of the box and if you don’t do wireless gaming you don’t have to worry about buying the wireless adapter.
I’d really like to hear a SDF member’s response on this little factoid.
This site is brilliant, up until now I had to travel all over the internet looking for morons to laugh at, not anymore. Thank you SDF for employing them and placing them in one location for me (and many others it would seem) to laugh at.
btw, I don’t see the big deal about leaving wireless networking out if it means a cheaper product for the masses, which makes you look all the more foolish as the high initial price is one of the many issues with the PS3! Oh, and your article is wrong too, you can use any WAP/WB not just the MS one. Not that I think you poor deluded sods read these comments of course, it would shatter your strange dream world
The DS, PSP and Wii are all cheaper than the 360 so there goes your ‘cheaper’ argument.
Better luck next time.
We’re getting played, fools. The comments are moderated, yet all this sony-hate is coming through regardless? On a site called Sony Defense Force? We’ve all been suckered into this shit, fans and non-fans alike, and there isn’t any shame in that. Actually there is a whole lot of shame, because we’re all fucking rubes.
Who gives a fuck atleast they haven’t wasted £500 on some piece of shit console that is supposed to be next gen.
Why the hell does this site even exist. Sony have lost and its time you face that and commit scuiside of something…?
HAY GUIS! WHICH CONSOLE COSTS AT LEAST $400 OUT OF THE BOX AND COMES WITH SHITTY MOTION CONTROL? WHICH CONSOLE HAS GAMES THAT NO ONE WANTS TO PLAY? WHICH CONSOLE HAS ALL THE PRETTY GRAPHICS IN THE WORLD BUT NO ONE CARES?
YAY FOR PS3
FishFuse: You’re probably right, this site has to be a spoof site, the alternative is just too hard to believe.
Still, it’s fun to take the piss regardless
@m0dus. Two of the systems that you named are handhelds. As for the Wii, the CPU and other components of the system are cheaper and less expensive to produce than the 360 and PS3, there for the Wii comes at a cheaper price.
Its true from a company that make computers they should have those build in so spudit people dont have to buy another $100 dollar part
You know, now that I think about it, you should base a decision on what console to buy entirely on weather it has wifi or not. You shouldnt even consider weather it has games you want to play on it or not.
Sure the PS3 has Wi-Fi capabilities. It can’t blow me though.
And Xbox 360 has Halo 3. That is virtually Sex on a DVD.
Built in WiFi, BluRay player, absolutely no good titles, and I all I have to pay is 600 or around there, I am gonna buy one right now…Oh wait, my 360 already provides everything I need, and WITH the exra hundred I spent on the adapter, I still have good games to play online. MAN its gotta suck to be a PS3 owner right now.
OMFG CP0 that was the most amazing comment ever ROFL!
Get this man the authority to make posts!
If you equate the wireless adapter into the 360′s price tag it’s still cheaper than the PS3….I don’t get it.
I would buy the 360 over the PS3 if it was a 1000 dollars just because of the games not because of the price.
Meh
Thats the problem with SDF and people that are sony fanboys, they play Playstation 3, I play video games, i play games that are fun. But unfortuniatally, there are no fun games on the PS3
*ahem*
TDK Develops 200GB Blu-ray Disc

51gb HD DVD with its comparability with older dvd player(which are in xbox360′s) can loose hope…. now.
XBOX Live is still infinitly better.its only 50 bucks a year.who gives a shitabout how much it costs aslong as you get what you pay for.*cough*PS3*cough*Sucks*cough*
wow and microsoft considers the 360 current gen………………… even those childs toys they wii and ds have wifi built in………the handheld psp is better than the home console 360 just what i suspected
