Global PS3 Shortages To End Soon As Price Drop Looms

ps3stock.jpg

It looks like Sony will no longer be supply constrained in their global markets and they’ll be well equipped for that $399 price drop rumored to be coming soon.

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd., one of the world’s largest manufacturers on electronic manufacturing service (EMS) basis, recently joined Sony’s supply chain to deliver Play Station 3 (PS3) consoles, according to industry sources.

The sources noted that Sony has set a shipment goal of 10 million PS3 consoles for the first quarter of 2008. This means fierce competition in the global market for game consoles and will lead to a boom in the sector making consumer electronics.

Insiders in the sector said that Sony has cut the selling price of PS3 consoles, and, at the mean time, planned to launch low-price models, with ASUSTeK Computer Inc. and Hon Hai Precision to supply the models.

  1. What shortages? I’ve seen them in stores everywhere I go since late January..

  2. I went into a store and there was a fort made out of ps3 boxes.

  3. Hah I love this site. Only here could Sony being forced to lower prices again on a console they’re already selling for less than it cost to build be a good thing.

My favorite was the source on this one though:

“Noteworthy is that although losing its leading position to Nintendo in the competition between its PS3 and Nintendo’s Wii, Sony still sees its PS2 consoles, which have been launched for seven years, remain hot-selling in the world.”

When did they have this leading position? The two days that the PS3 was out and the Wii wasnt?

  4. Shortages? I thought that was the Wii. My bad. :-(

  5. I was at Walmart the other day and there were so many PS3′s they had moved the greeter to the electronics section to give blowjobs to anyone who would consider buying one.

  6. truespector’s post FTW!!!! hahaha

    Fuck Sony!!!!!!

  7. You should see my work on digg. :)

  8. There were no Playstations 3 in stock in the last ten retail stores I entered. PS3 wins again!

  9. @maybecca

why did you go to ten shoe stores?

  10. Maybecca, you’re a crack whore with poor grammar. Put your mouth back on a d*** and make yourself useful.

  11. Fatman: None of them sold clothes. In fact, three of them sold games!

truspector: But then how am I supposed to make sandwiches and fetch beer for my Sony overlords?

  12. @maybecca

So… you went to 10 stores, and only 3 of them sold games… so… you didn’t actually go to any store that SOLD the PS3, did you?

    @top picture.

That is obviously shopped. The ‘Playstation 3′ text on all those shelves has been shopped onto there, it’s not that noticable, but when you look for it, you can plainly see it.

  13. YA XBOX SUX AND HALO3 CUZ IT DOESNT HAV BLURAY WITCH PWNS! BLURAY OWNZ LEIK EVERYTHING AND WII 2 CUZ ITZ LEIK BADASS

  14. This one made no sense and was just not funny. I’ll try my best to avoid the PS3 at stores like walmart, target, toys r us and bestbuy who have enough PS3′s to feed a 3rd world country.

There’s like 5 ps3′s wherever I go, seriously. Nobody wants them.

  16. Yeah, my local grocery store was all sold out of PS3s too. Leaving an empty space next to the asparagus tips, across from the Valasic Dills!

  17. @maybecca

Tough call, but I suggest you figure it out before you finish off the resin in your one hitter.

  18. When I worked at Safeway, we were rearranging stock, and my boss got mad at me for putting the PS3s next to the olives!

  19. P.S. Seriously, I’m not sure if that’s a Walmart in that picture or Winco.

@ kane…stop taking things so literally.

also @ kane…god I hope you’re joking about the “difficult” to see, yet obvious photoshopping of the PS3 logo. Of course it’s photoshopped…there’s FOOD on the goddamn shelves!

  21. PS3 WILL NEVER BEAT XBOX 360 YOU FUCKING IDIOTS GET SOME LIVES, MAKE SOMETHING USEFULL YOU FUCKS, PS3 IS DEAD XBOX 360 RULES YOU!!!!!

    Aww… Granny Can’t get her ps3,SO SAD. ;)

  27. Ok, the last time I went into a GAME in my town, there we’re PS3s stacked up to the damn ceiling.

Are Sony buying them back themselves just so they can say they need to ship more or something?

  28. Seraph: Nah, they’re just flooding the retail channels with PS3 goodness. Presumably, they’re hoping that this will widen the channels, rather than causing them to explode all over Sony as retailers realise that they can’t survive with so many unsold PS3s hanging around, especially if Sony introduce yet another new version to compete with the older ones.

  29. It’s just advetising you dumbass, they do it for every game that’s popular. Halo 3 just happens to be one of them.

  30. Apparently, the store selling those Ps3′s are trying to put snacks into children’s hands instead of games; I’ve never seen that many packages of food in an electronic store since, well, ever.

Why is there bread and cheese snacks where the PS3 ‘was’. SDF, I think you went to the wrong section of Wal-Mart. I was in Best Buy, and even though the 360′s been out longer than the PS3, there are still way more PS3′s in there. You know why? People dont’t want to pay $600 for a fucking game system!

  32. I can’t wait! The 80 gig drops to $400, then gets dicontinued, and sony releases a 100gig version at $600! Sony can’t afford to sell for less, so they’re trying to make a PS3 that’s worth it.

  33. That article made me lol

  34. @LairIsTehRoxorz

    lolinternet

    @PS3UP

lol, either you are a new kind of stupid, or you are doing this on purpose, I choose the latter.

10 million consles? huh its too bad only about 100000 will sell.

also ps3up 360 was out quite a bit longer than the ps3 and wii, everyone already bought their 360.

  37. Ha! The shelves in that pic are empty because the staff are about to replace everything with Wii products…

  38. There is a fully stacked pyramid of PS3s every single time I drop by Best Buy. No one is buying them.

The only shortage Sony has right now is customers that want to buy their shitty Blu-ray player (aka PS3)

The PS3 is not sold out anywhere, plain and simple

  40. A PS3 “news”! I was under the impression you guys were a 360 site will all the news dealing with it.

  41. Its amazing what you can do with image editing software these days isn’t it?

  42. dont you think its time for a new story? its getting boring coming back again and again with the same stoory popping up

  43. LOL, What ps3 shortage I work a video games store and even with that joke of a price drop. Sorry I mean Liquidation of the 60gig model we sold 2 ps3′s in 5 months. Face it no one wants one because there nothing worth play on it but bad ports of xbox360 games and failed exclusives like lair.

  44. Oh this is rich. That pic is so obviously Photoshopped that you can really hear the strangled cries of these PS3Fanboys.

There are no PS3′s on the shelves so what do we have in their place? Looks like a loaf of bread, maybe some twinkies and a box of Ritz crackers.

    This.Is.Sadness

  45. Also, please explain this logic to me. How is it that a looming price drop is going to end a shortage of PS3′s?

If PS3′s were in such short supply – NOT – then why does Sony feel the need to drop the price? If you really want a lesson in economics then you look at the XBOX 360 and the Wii.

Suppy and demand on the XBOX 360 have been in pretty close harmony since the launch of the XBOX 360. Therefore MS felt no immediate need to lower the price. They only did so recently to marginalize any minor gains that Sony may have gotten from announcing their own price drops.

The PS3 has been out for less than a year, and already their talking price drop. What happened to Sony’s earlier pronouncements that they didn’t see a need to cut price for at least 2 to 3 years? XBOX 360 has been out for almost 2 years and now you’re seeing the first price cuts on the system. So what does that tell you about how the PS3 is selling versus the XBOX?

Also, the Wii is selling out pretty much everywhere. Will you see a price cut on the Wii this holiday season? And is a price cut going to make more Wii’s available? Probably not.

You guys should stick to manufacturing shoddy Photoshop images to appease your bleeding wallets. Leave logic to those who actually have brains.

  46. Sony sales are starting to pick up, but that just means Sony is losing more money. -$250 off every PS3 sold. They’re in the hole, having to make cutbacks and take out loans to produce the damn thing. Now every system has always lost money at launch (except the Wii), only to make it up in sales. Thing is, PS3 games aren’t selling. One PS3 game in the top ten, and that’s Madden (barf).

Did I mention they almost fired the guy who invented the PS3? He’s now working in the mailroom!
Meanwhile, the guy who invented the PS1 and 2 (Ken) left Sony, with a one-finger salute.

Wake up, PS3 isn’t sold out anywhere.

    These “global shortages” don’t exist.
