Does The Media Owe Sony An Apology?
Rewind back to E3 2005.
MS had yet another lacklustre E3 with myriad UE3 powered bald space marine shooters on show and the usual hyperbole about XBox Live being the only online network that could get away with charging unsuspecting consumers $50 a year for a lag-ridden peer2peer ‘service’.
Then the Sony conference … and the Killzone 2 trailer blew everyone out of the water.
Gaming journalists.
Playstation fans.
And 360 owners.
After the initial shock came the inevitable denials. The MS viral machine was in full swing and very soon forums and blogs across the web were awash with accusations of ‘fake’ and ‘CG’ and it wasn’t long before major gaming publications reflected that sentiment in features and articles about Killzone 2′s ‘fabricated CG trailer’.
Nevermind that most of the writers for these gaming media outlets couldn’t understand code written for an x86, they were now telling Sony and Guerrilla that the Killzone 2 trailer wasn’t done to PS3′s spec and that it was in fact impossible this generation to replicate that kind of geometry and animation on any platform.
Well here’s the proof and clearly not only did they match the trailer but they even surpassed it in some respects (animation, lighting etc).
In light of this year’s astonishing IN-GAME Killzone 2 trailer, many have forgotten the witch hunt that took place in E3 2005. We at The SDF will never forget and we hope the gaming media at large will be big enough to come out and say sorry to Sony for their lack of faith.

Amen, brother SDF.
i don’t know what to say, well done for comparing two clips…. yes it looks good but your going to be waiting over a year for it, and by that time i would really hope that the A.I. is half decent at least
Thhe stuff on the right looks as good or better except in the case of humans, the shots on the left look marginally better on human textures (not the clothing perse but the actual humans themselves)
Bravo though, this was the first no contrived news item I read on here.
The only one that owes sony an apology is SDF.
You make sony fans look bad. You should use truth and logic to make your points, rather than your usual lies, and fabrications.
The Killzone 2 E3 2k5 video was CGI, idiot.
Killzone 2 looks good, but not great.. crysis looks better than this…
this site is FUNNY… intentionally flaming xbox fans, while at the same time, make a fool of sony fans…
Meh. I have Gears of War for when I want to run around killing shit to a blurry grey and brown backdrop. I’ll stick with that.
hmmm i cant see a thing although i am colorblind to grey.
$50 a year is the equivalent of a small meal at McDonald’s each month. Quit being pussies about it.
This game looks shit. I made a PS3 emulator for the 360 because it’s so much more powerful and has got better graphics. I can play Killzone on my 360 now, not that I want to because Halo3 is gonna be so much better and you’ll all die because you wasted your money on a PS3 instead of a 360. Go fall in a hole in die!
hey guys, you’re doing a great job stating the obvious. still, here’s a news which will explain WHY ps3 is that superior to the 360:
http://gamer.blorge.com/2007/09/16/developer-xbox-360-games-keeping-up-to-ps3-but-not-for-long/
I’d say sony owes gamers an apology for lying about thier machine for about 3 years straight. Pewopel used to talk about how awesome lair was gonna be and that turned out to be shit.
Not really. It looks rather bland to be honest. A bland rip off of Gears of War to be more exact. I will admit that the realism factor of a bunch of guys riding around on platforms with no armour plating or cold weather gear while looking to be very high up in the clouds without needing to worry about freezing their noses and other bodily parts off is satisfying. Nice to see Sony continues to just stagger around like a dunce trying to not look as such around markedly superior console gaming and PC gaming, PC gaming being the best, period.
Just for the record, SDF is full of shit.
But I can admit that they did a great job with Killzone 2 so far.
Now, let’s see if they can maintain that quality. It is already cursed by being called a “Halo Killer”.
The 2005 IS cg, and the one on the left is TWO years later. Also, killzone2 may look technically impressive, but it’s so bland. Halo offers everything from alien corriors to wide, sweeping vistas
I must admit killzone 2 looks pretty good for a monochomatic game. I for one could care less about this because I played killzone 1 which at best was a bargain bend game. Any system and render grays and blacks well. Show me something else, this does not impress me in the least. Oh and on the xbox live being 50 a year I would rather pay for a great service then get a crappy one for free. It may be free but free crap is still crap.
Yeah, 50 bucks a year is only 13 cents a day.
Does the media owe Sony an apology? No… not really. Back in 2005, Sony kept mum on whether that trailer was CG or actual running code.
They were rightly lambasted for trying to pass off CG as working code when it did not exist in that form at that time. Sony has a history of being deceptive and dishonest when it suits their purposes.
Fast forward to today. The Killzone franchise has yet to prove that it is any good, much less even have any chance of measuring up to the shadow of the Halo franchise.
H3 will have 3 million units sold within the first 2 weeks after it goes on sale. Killzone will have 3 million units sold in like…. never. Not even if you lump the sales of the original PS2 Killzone and the PSP verion as well.
This.Is.Sadness
Look, everyone (critics) agrees that Kill Zone 2 looks good graphically, but they also all agree that it doesnt replicate what it showed in that CG trailer at E3. Sony is infamous for creating prerendered footage (*cough* MotorStorm *cough*)and trying to pass it off as in game footage. It never is, and it without a doubt was not in game footage with Kill Zone 2. Everyone knows this, and so do you. You can compare still images till the cows comes home, but the extra smoothness of everything in the E3 trailer reaks of computer animation. Just like Motorstorm, just like Metal Gear Solid 4, just like Lair.
@ mikelimtw
Thats a great idea. Next week, expect to see SDF with some bar graphs trying to show how sales of Kill Zone 1 and Kill Zone 2 will beat sales of Halo 3… ha ha ha Good luck with that that one guys….. You can throw sales of Lair in there also…
Actually, Sony did better at E3 05 than they have the past two years.
P.S. Nintendo ruled E3 06, and MS led 07
Xbox 360 is such a joke and all the 360 fagboys leaving comments are an even bigger joke
06 = year of the wii
07 = year of the 360
08 = year of the PS3
‘Fagboys’? Wow, how long did it take you to come up with that?
Being a professional game developer with both a 360 and a ps3 dev kit sitting right here next to me, I would like the throw my 2 cents in.
Ive been a professional animator for 5 years now and there is no way that the real time Killzone has anything better then the CG one. Not in any way at all.
The Cell CAN be about 10-15% faster then the 360 CPU but the GPU IS about 35-40% faster then the old Geforce 7 the PS3 is using.
These are the facts. Not Sony Defense force BS
I don’t like fanboys. Not just Sony’s. Any kind. I get mad when I see things like this:
“Meh. I have Gears of War for when I want to run around killing shit to a blurry grey and brown backdrop. I’ll stick with that.”
Everyone needs to wait until they judge which game is better or worse. Lair and Heavenly Sword are case in point. Don’t brag unless you are the unquestioned winner.
@rumple
” 08 = year of the ps3″
based on what? name a “good” game other than killzone 2.
I thought Killzone 1 kinda sucked even though i thought it looked nice.
@Truth: Why would that piss you off? Because I’m not drooling over a new game for a console I don’t own yet (note the YET in this sntence, it’s very important) when the visuals are at about the same level of appeal as a game I’ve owned for nearly a year and we have NO word on the gameplay yet?
Seriously, I’m about as unbiased as you’ll get, at least on the internet. I like my 360, I like my Wii, and when I get around to buyign a PS3, I’ll probably like that too.
The reason I don’t own one yet, aside from living in Australia where they cost a thousand bucks, is that there are no titles selling it to me. Lair would have been one, but I’ve yet to see a single positive review for it that didn’t come directly from a Sony affiliated source.
Heavenly Sword looks like a fun rental title.
Warhawk sounds like a great game.
But nothing else currently out on the PS3 appeals to me that I don’t already have on the 360 from before it was ported over.
Maybe next year when Sony suddenly unveils a backlog of killer first party titles for the PS3 that everyone needs to own right away is when I’ll consider peeling off a wad of brightly coloured bills and handing them over in exchange for one.
Sure, the screens used do show quite a bit of difference, even towards the in-game model’s favor, but when you compare certain effects and details that weren’t covered here, CGI still wins.
For example, the faces in the original were extremely realistic. If you don’t remember, try watching the video again. It’s like the developers severed someone’s head and placed it on a 3D model. The in-game Killzone 2 shots don’t look anywhere near as good or as varied, especially in expressions.
Also, note the difference in scenarios: CGI was in broad daylight, in-game was at night, and it goes without saying that the lighting effects will be better in darker areas.
But the biggest downfall, so far, in regards to the in-game Killzone 2 is the dialogue. I loved the original, which had a more ‘OMG all-out war!’ feel to it, like Call of Duty, but the new one feels… cliched and more movie-like.
If anyone owes anyone an apology its Sony to the consumer.
Remember the TRex demo for the original playstation and how it looked just like Jurasic Park. Now remember how horrible that TRex in Tomb Raider looked in comparison.
Remember what the Cell processor was supposed to be capable of. I vividly remember that Final Fantasy Ball room dance and how there online was supposed to be like The Matrix. How about Sadam supposively purchasing a shitload of PS2′s so that he could launch nukes. Good Times.
Remember how powerful the emotion engine is? Well neither does Sony because they haven’t been able to deliver yet again. Maybe Konami’s MGS4 and Squares FF 13 will sell some systems but by the time it will be to little to late.
Congradulations PS3, you took 2 years to remake a trailer. Which still isn’t top quality.
Ummm, the one on the left looks wayyy better……
I think Sony bought it upon themeselves with any and all negative reviews of games and etc. For years they where talking up the PS3 as the “be all and end all of consoles”, but yet they keep fucking up. With all the talk up about the PS3 as this uber-console I think the media take a game and review them more critcally than a 360 or a Wii game.
So no, the media doesn’t owe Sony a apology; Sony owes the consumers an apology for not delievering what they promised.
two words folks
HALO…THREE>>>
L4rg0
This is clearly the Halo 2.5 killer.
