Developer: XBox 360 Just About Keeping Up With PS3, But Not For Long
We all knew it to be true. PS3 is a supercomputer in a box. XBox 360 is a 2004 PowerMac in a box. Sans OS X. It was only a matter of time before the ol’ PowerMac couldn’t keep up and it looks like it’s starting to happen:

GAMER.BLORGE.com has learned exclusively what some of the key points of the Xbox vs PS3 war are, and it’s not all about the Halo.In a recent conversation with an undisclosed developer source, GAMER.BLORGE.com has been made privy to the biggest problems facing developers as they work with the Xbox 360 and the PS3: It’s all about the RAM and the processor.According to our source, it’s easier on almost every level to work with the Xbox 360 in the development stage. Due to the older systems large amount of RAM, developers can work with a little more head room and not worry about running out of operating memory.Where the real problem stem is in the two system’s processors. While Xbox games can be tweaked to move up to the PS3, the reverse is not always the case. Due to the PS3′s advanced processor, games developed for the Sony backed platform sometimes can’t be downgraded to the the 360′s chip.
With the 360 being in the range of 2 years old now, it is said they have used about 90% of the systems resources, which allows for some PS3 games to be ported over, but it will become rarer as time goes on. As they push the PS3′s performance, they will finally surpass the abilities of the 360 completely.
So where are you left in the console war? Why are developers still coming out with so few PS3 games? It’s really just that much easier to work with the 360.
In the end though, who does our undisclosed developer think will win? While they gave no time frame for the inevitable victory, they were very clear that they thought the long haul champion would be the PS3 for this round of the overall war.

With the costs of development on the PS3 mounting I could only assume the cost will only get great the more they push the system. While it is true the games will look better this extra expence doesnt always mean a better gaming experience. Once the standards for the PS3 graphics are rased then I believe more developers wont be able to foot the bill to make the higher quality games the PS3 gamers will have come to expect. And if the option to port the game to other systems isnt there to help make some of the money back I think even fewer developers would foot the bill for a PS3 game exclusive. So basicly you will see the few first party titles on the PS3 and a bunch of 360 ports in the coming future. All that power gone to waste, its a shame really.
…heh…
Obviously, you never went to business school.
Limit the development to one platform; limit your userbase to one platform; limit your revenue.
Therefore, the norm will be development on Xbox 360 followed by development on PS3.
And, as always, money and studio ownership makes exclusives, not journalists-wannabees.
So one pissant developper says so and it is reality? What about all the others who say they are equal or those saying the 360 is more powerful?
It just means that people will make 360 versions first, so ps3 can get our sloppy seconds.
“Where the real problem stem is in the two system’s processors.”
Heh, is the third one broken or what?
Where are the PS3 news? Anything would be nice, eg. test of different HDD’s you can put in the PS3 and what kind of data access times they have or some stuff like that… anything, even folding@home results would be nice, eg. a chart which PS3 gamer is leading on that front and/or is the whole folding@home project having success with all the PS3′s folding away.
You know, based on this logic, you’d have a hard time explaining why the PS2 continues to outsell the PS3.
The PS2 has even less power and performance versus the Wii, much less the 360 or PS3.
The moral of this story, people don’t decide on development based on the power or performance of a target system. They look at market penetration – and that, sadly, leaves Sony’s PS3 eating everyone else’s dust sitting in dead last place.
This.Is.Sadness
No kidding. PS2 had less power than the Gamecube or Xbox. That’s why it’s still selling. It’s always the most inferior console that ends up leading the cycle cause that’s the one developers go for.
You have to remember where the Playstation came from in the first place. Originally supposed to be hooked up to the SNES, until the contract fell through. Ken was the only one at Sony who wanted to keep the project open. So he just takes the CD-Rom, slaps on a motherboard, gives it a controller-bada bing, bada boom, we have the PS1.
Just replace the CD with a DVD-Rom, bump up the motherboard (soder on the old one for back-compat) and we have the PS2.
That’s all they wanted to do with the PS3, bump up the hardware, replace the DVD-Rom with Blu-Ray. But it didn’t work. Blu-Ray just doesn’t want to work with PS hardware. It wasn’t until about a year ago, this or last month, that the PS3 was even working. Sony had to do backflips, and that shot production costs through the roof.
In fact, most of the PS3′s problems stem back to blu-ray in one way or another. Bugs, lack of developers, production costs, etc.
I would have to totally agree with this article. (Well, not the commentary about the Xbox being a 2004 Powermac, but whatever) Developers are currently, and will continue to deisng games for the 360 and port them to the PS3 because its easier and more cost efficient. Developers dont want to take the extra time to develop a game on the minimum RAM on the PS3 and then have to start from scratch for the 360 version. Until the PS3 surpasses the install base of the 360 (which isn’t going to happen anytime this decade, if ever) developers will contine giving the PS3 sloppy seconds. Sony will have to rely on first party developers for original games (*cough* Lair *cough*, and that in a nutshell is why the PS3 will fail. Good job posting this article, this might be the first non biased article I’ve seen on this site.
Oh yeah, and the Xbox has 3 processors.. not 2. I would take 3 weaker processors running with 512 MB of RAM over a cell processor running with 256 MB of RAM anyday!
One of the problems with Sony is that there marketing campaign kinda sucks. When is the last time you see a commercial for a game for both the PS3 and 360 and it usually ends with the 360 “jump in” ending?
Another thing is that Sony is mainly a hardware manufacture and not a software developer like MS. Sure the PS3 has more “theoretical power” but like said above its a pain in the ass to program for (the Orange Box has been delayed for possibly that reason).
I guess at the end of the day, I can’t wait to get a PS3 (I own a 360) so the more games I get to play in general on both platforms.
Wow, i’m impressed. I think this is actually a PS3 news. Thanks!!!!11!11!!111!!1!!1
It’s a valid point I’ll give you but I think we will move next gen before they manage to squeeze everything out of the 360.
to put it the simple way sony now has the same problems that the original xbox faced compared to the ps2. the latter was the most simple system with a load of 3rd party games, making it affordable with a very wide range of games to play on it with few if any noticeable graphical differences.
The ps3 now has the same if not bigger problems due to the price gap and the ps3s sad (and I mean this sincerely) lack of really good killer titles both 1st and 3rd party. I really hope that changes however. It would really help if they could get something on par with the Halo franchise in killzone 2.
All the big ones (what if we start referring to them as NSM) (nintendosonymicrosoft) make great games. at the moment Nintendo and microsoft will be in the lead but I have no doubt that sony will have a MAJOR comeback at some point. Untill then I will buy my first “next gen” console (unless you count in that monster of a PC I am typing on rigth now) on the 26th when Halo 3 comes out.
Sony, Sony, Sony, can’t you see
Your PS3′s price is terifying
If only you had better games
Maybe more people would come to play
We’re all wrong.
The real winner here?
The gamer. Who receives the games.
Them, and the Dreamcast.
DREAMCAST 4 EVAR
I guess that this means that the Cell programing is actually good at stopping the 360 owners from getting the games that come to the PS3 first. That’s a winner for SONY.
I still play my Dreamcast. It’s just nice to find an unbiased site for all my PS3 exclusive reviews!
@ Bobtehol
Those games are called first party games and wont be released on other consoles anyway. If you referring to 3rd party games, none of them are designed on the PS3, they are all ports from the 360. Which is why you dont see lots of 3rd party exclusives on the PS3.
hello everyone im new the the site but for one reason, i was on the halo 3 forums at bungie.net(which is way better than this shit website, and a topic came up saying that sony gives halo 3 a 7/10.well i really want to say is sony is jealous of what microsoft has they copied everything that the 360 had and put it on the ps3(guide button for example)sony knows that halo 3 is gonna wipe them out, because the ps3 is shit, i was never a fan of sony, the only game i ever played was the GTA series.ok anyway sony u guys are bull shit!!!!!!!!u even edited the halo 3 wikia page and said that the graphics were gonna suck, sony u guys suck ur ps3 sucks everything u made sucks, this website sucks, and the name sony sucks, i hope u sony fan boys flame me cuz thats what good day
