Blu-ray Vindicated Once Again – Lost Odyssey Spans 4 DVDs

Flash back 10 years ago. Final Fantasy VII was released on the Playstation and spanned 3 discs. The game was great but the multiple discs quickly became annoying. Then 2 years later Final Fantasy VIII weighed in at 4 discs. Thankfully, the Playstation 2’s use of DVD technology did away with having to fumble through multiple discs. Now that Sony has blessed all the Playstation 3s with Blu-ray technology there is no need to worry about multiple disc games and developers now have peace of mind when creating games for the Playstation 3.
Unfortunately for the other camp the picture isn’t quite as rosy.
What happens when you mix 12 year old DVD technology with hardware (360) just over a year old? We’re seeing the results today. Just over a year into the 360’s life and we’re already seeing games span 4 discs (Lost Odyssey) and 3 discs (Blue Dragon/Halo 3). That can be quite the headache for developers and gamers alike. This concerned gamer doesn’t think it’s too far-fetched to believe we might see 360 games appear on multiple DVDs that number into the double digits before its all said and done.

“Just over a year into the 360’s life”
Yeah, the 360 has been around almost 2 years.
http://microsoftassaultforce.wordpress.com/
lol yeah SDF does it agien puting out crap for the world to read greaat job this is funny stuff want some real news go to the link at the top of the post. also you should change your name to xbox haters because thats all you are you post almost no sony news and also you suck cockbite…
“…and 3 discs (Blue Dragon/Halo 3)…”
Halo 3 is not on 3 DVD’s.
Your source is very very old and that picture has been confirmed incorrect by Bungie. The ENTIRE game of Halo 3 is on ONE DVD, and it is deeper and better looking than any game, 360 or PS3, that has ever been made or is being made.
The second disc is merely Bonus Material, making of, interviews, that sort of thing.
The game disc contains the Campaign, Multiplayer, the Forge, as well as having the most customizable multiplayer ever conceived in a game.
I’m looking forward to your “unbiased” review of H3, so I can laugh as you sony fanboys give it a 3, while everyone else gives it a 9.5 or higher.
On that note, you guys havin’ fun playing Lair?
Wait not that i believe what your saying or anything, but i thought that halo 3 the game was just on one disc, and the other collector’s stuff was the other three discs “(and 3 discs (Blue Dragon/Halo 3)”. http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/articles/819/819245p1.html on that article it has the standard edition of halo 3 , that was leaked on to ebay, and it has one disc only. Please do y our research before making such claims. The game (halo3) doesnt span three discs, just the collectors bonus discs are separate.
peace
If anyone remembers, that rumor was debunked, and it was made clear that the second game disc was actually an extra content disc, not actual software required to play Halo 3. You still only need one disc to play.
Halo 3 is one disc. RPG’s are the only games that have more then one disc on XBOX360 with Blue Dragon & Lost Odyssey. But if developed right large RPG’s don’t have to be on one disc, such as Oblivion!
ALSO, Xbox 360 has been out for about two years, your beloved Playstation 3 has been out for almost a year… I know it’s hard to confuse the two, you would thing that Playstation 3 would have some more consoles sold by now.
- 360 Defense Force
Last I checked MGS4 single player was on one disk and the online was on another.
Wow, I can see an RPG being on multiple disks, but an action/stealth game?
Come on.
In an RPG, changing discs isn’t that much of a hassle. You get a point in a game, then you switch to the next. Big deal.
The multiple discs is because of all that FMV Japanese developers love so much. It isn’t needed. Especially since the in engine stuff looks just like the FMV.
4 discs isn’t a hassle. it’s only a hassle if you are constantly switching discs in gameplay. LO will have me switching discs every 10 hours or so.
Using a ps3 will have me switching discs every 5 hours since that how lomng the average game lasts.
Two problems with this…
1) Only one source is valid (Source 1), that actually talks about the game
2) The only valid source has no valid source for it’s information (listing IGN.com as a whole as your source is not a real source)
Hironobu Sakaguchi, if he really said what was claimed, forgot that cut-scenes don’t need to be pre-rendered anymore. All current-gen systems (except Wii) can render them on-the-fly and they’ll look much better too.
That’s the developer’s fault for not using the HD-DVD, which is plenty big enough. Blu-ray is like parking your car in an airplane hanger. If Resistance:FOM couldn’t fill it up, nothing else can come close.
PS, dr34m3r,
Even Wii can render OTF scenecuts.
@xeacons: “That’s the developer’s fault for not using the HD-DVD, which is plenty big enough.”
The Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive is not applicable for nor addressable by games.
The Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive only supports playing HD-DVDs and DVDs, not game discs.
I guess that make FF7 a shit game too…
Oh, okay. That kinda defeats the whole purpose, don’t it? Esspecially if you got a regular TV. On a normal TV, all 3 systems look the same.
Uhmmm… Halo 3 (the game) will be on one disc, fucktards. the other discs are extra-material. Please just fucking die.

There’s nothing stopping Microsoft from adding support for the HD-DVD drive to playback games, but it would be unlikely they’d start putting games on HD-DVDs because it would limit a lot of the Xbox360 install base.
Microsoft is not going to add HD-DVD support to the 360 because it is not needed. I like this article because it shows off one of the best next gen RPG’s, and its only available on the 360… (of course) Who cares if its on 4 discs or 10 discs, if the game is great, then I will swap out as many discs as need be. Sure, it would be more convenient if it were on one disc, but if that meant adding a soon to be dead technology like HD DVD or Blue Ray to the 360, than forget about it! It’s not worth it. Then we would be like the “PS3rd place” people who are buying a cheap blue ray player that also plays games. lol
STFU and talk about PS3 stuff.
We cant talk about PS3rd place stuff, you know this site is all about proving why the 360 is better than the PS3…. Lets wait for those September sales #’s to come in and see how manu consoles the Failstation can sell with HALO coming out. lol
Oh, and if you want to talk about Blue Ray, why dont you emention some of its flaws???
“The interactive features actually work on HD DVD whereas Blu-ray titles are six to nine months away from getting features that actually work,” Bennett said, referring to Blu-ray’s current inability to do picture in picture videos.

Not that I really support HD DVD either, but at least Microsoft was smart enough to not include an internal HD Drive. Now they can change the hardware as they wish, and let the public decide if they want to invest. Not force it down their throats like Sony is trying to do… (They did such a great job with UMD’s. lol)
I dont see why it wouldnt be possible to release a version on DVD and a version on HD-DVD.
just thought I’d throw that out there
It would be possible, but it seems that Microsoft already maded the decision to keep their games on Standard DVD and support HD DVD on a non-videogame basis only. Perhaps if they released games on both formats, maybe more people would buy the HD DVD add on. Im not sure….. For $180 bucks I think I would.
Blue Dragon is 3 discs and Lost Odyssey may be 4 (Halo 3 douche bags is only 1 disc) but truth is 1 disc of Blue Dragon (and its probably safe say Lost Odessy) is not only longer but more fun to play than both Lair and Heavenly Sword put together. Thats pretty fucking sad.
I honestly bought a PS2 when it came out for two reasons, DVD playback and MGS 2. Since I don’t care about this whole HD vs Bluray crap and MGS 4 will most likely be released for the 360 in the next year or 2, there is no reason for me to purchase a PS3. Grand Theft Auto is no longer an exclusive and honestly I’ve gotten tired of the Final Fantasy series. Unless the PS3 can give me blow jobs on demand, there is no way I’m spending 600$’s on one.
Its true i buy Final Fantasy and it have all those disc i think the moral of this history is that the 360 is getting outdated
@spaniard0069
MG4 is coming on February i buy all the other games and since i play them on the PS2 first i’m only going to play the new ones on Playstation 3, And NO Final Fantasy NEVER GETS OLD Since Everbody only play those games on PS first they are only going to play them on PS3, The 360 Lost Odyseey is not going to sell well 360 is only for First person Shooter Playstation is for RPGs
PS3UP – What country are you from? Is English your first language?
“Flash back 10 years ago. Final Fantasy VII was released on the Playstation and spanned 3 discs. The game was great but the multiple discs quickly became annoying.”
LOL, yeah, because changing discs TWICE in an 80 hour game really was a fucking chore.
PS3UP
“Final Fantasy NEVER GETS OLD”! Then I bet you enjoyed Final Fantasy X2. You went through boxes of tissues while playing that game didn’t you (and I don’t mean for your face)? And whats this I’m reading about you buying all the games and you play them on your PS2 first. Do you enjoy looking at a disc read error or does your PS2 somehow magically play PS3 games? You are right about one thing, Lost Odyssey isn’t going to move units or save the 360 in Japan but I will correct you on one thing. The 360 and the original Xbox are for Hardcore gamers while the Playstation systems are for Casual gamers. There is a small percentage of hardcore gamers that own a Sony system or 2 (like myself) but for the most part they are casual gamers who purchase games like Madden and Final Fantasy games every year no matter what.
I hope its 5 disks. I love long games, and you can take your precious Blue Ray and eat it for all I care.
There are a lot more PS3 haters here than I thought. What’s the deal? It seems like every time I read news that champions the PS3 against the 360 the Microsoft loyalists come out in droves.
It’s almost as though the 360 fanboys browse the net looking for ways to defend their Red Ring of Death suffering systems. I’m sure if the shoe was on the other foot all the 360 fanboys would be pissing all over Sony for having to make gamers switch out discs. You people are so hypocritical.
The fact that Halo 3 even has to have a second disc for special features is a testament that the DVD format has run its course. It’s time for another format. Be it HD-DVD or Blu-Ray but it’s time for something else. How else do you really take advantage of an HDTV unless you have hi-def content?
The Elite SKU was built for the hi-def movie watching audience, not for gamers. I say that because if the content on the DVD is not hi-def than what do you need an HDMI port for? Exactly, nothing.
Slam Heavenly Sword if you want to. It’s awesome. Short, yes. But I’ll gladly replay every second of the game thanks to it’s rock solid gameplay and drop dead gorgeous graphics (way better than MGS4).
All of this is futile. Once Blu-Ray wins the war — and trust me, it will — MS will be forced to use the format in their next console. And MS will release their next console first since they decided to time the 360 the way they did.
Hey, anybody seen an original Xbox around or developers still making games for it? No? Wow, that’s funny because Sony — and other developers — still sells and supports the PS2 instead of dropping like a drunken prom date. Bottomline, the PS3 is an investment and the 10-year plan is real. Developers will shift projects over to the PS3 slowly but surely crowing Sony king once again.
Mr. Blue
Your an idiot. Since when is the content of a game thats on the dvd format not HD. Get a clue ass monkey, HD is all about resolution. PC’s have been HD for over a decade. All you needed was a decent monitor, a great graphics card and a game that supported high resolutions and textures. Your telling me that Gears of War isn’t HD because its on a dvd and not on blue ray or hd dvd format. Your whats wrong with America. Your an uneducated fool that loves to talk about shit like if you had a clue about what you were talking about. I won’t even bother reading the rest of you post due to the fact that you’ll probably enrage me further with your stupidity and I may have to hunt your down with my HD shotgun.

@ spaniard0069
Ok no i play all those ps2 games on my ps3 and i still buy ps2 games and i play them on my ps3 that whats going on, yea Hardcore games like the 360, and yea i buy FF X-2 and i dint like it i never finish the game, but FF12 is good go check it out
You know, i’d rather change disks once every 20 hours of game play, then have one disk with 5 hours of sparkles and fluff.

Anyone that spends the majority of his time creating new verbal obscenities (I mean really, ass monkey?) rather than stating more evidence to support is argument is either lacking REAL information, is very unintelligent, or has a cock the size of a jump drive. I’ll allow you to decide which category you fall in.
As for the argument against HD while you’re right in one regard — resolution — you fail to mention the other factors of HD versus standard definition. Namely compression.
Let’s look at X-Men 3 (whether you love or hate the movie is not the topic). On Blu-Ray the film’s audio track resonates at 7:1 and is fully uncompressed. If you know anything about compression versus raw audio/video you’ll know that raw file formats will ALWAYS beat out a compressed format. Hands down. You can’t argue that, it’s a simple fact.
If you’ve ever shot footage on a camcorder and then uploaded it to your computer you’ve probably seen the finished file at 2GB or more (depending on the length of course). And that’s just from some crappy over the counter camcorder. Now think about a million dollar+ camera as well as a separate audio technician(s) capturing all of the sound with their own multi-million dollar equipment and you have gig upon gigs of data.
That’s not to suggest that films are still uncompressed when they come to Blu-Ray or even HD-DVD but with the increased space from these two formats DVD developers can preserve more of original data by compressing less data giving you a more true to life visual and audio experience.
This goes back to my argument that the experience you’re getting on your standard DVD playing 360 will lack more of what makes a game truly high definition in more aspects than just resolution.
Also, if you remember later in the PS2’s lifecycle developers began streaming data from the disc (Jak & Daxter is an example) that allowed the game to never have to load. Imagine what developers will be doing when they can learn how to stream data from 25GB of space versus the 4.7GB. Wait, maybe you can’t imagine it. I’m sorry. Forget that last line, it might be too much for your Altoid-sized cranium.
As for what’s wrong with America? I’m not even sure where that’s coming from. I sense a very hostile, unhappy individual in need of serious therapy.
Based on your profane language and violent tone (you’re going to shot me with an HD shotgun?) I wouldn’t place you above high-school level. But if I’m wrong, and you’re over 21 and you live in the US — then I blame the American education system for churning out inarticulate morons like yourself.
Thanks for playing.
MrBlue
Bravo. I bet you were beating off to your thoughts racing through your head as you were typing that post. Thanks for wasting so much of your valuable time typing that up for me. I hope you are unable to respond to my post due to your keys being stuck together. I’m gonna go play Rainbow Six Las Vegas (the good version, you know on the 360, not the jagged PS2 looking one on the PS3) while you run off to Walmart to get a replacement keyboard.
“On Blu-Ray the film’s audio track resonates at 7:1 and is fully uncompressed”
It’s still compressed, the bitrate is just higher. Nothing wrong with compression though and it can even be lossless (not sure if the film in question has lossless audio).
“– stream data from 25GB of space versus the 4.7GB.”
Xbox 360 uses DL DVDs, aka. DVD9s which are 8.5Gb. Games today do fit on a DVD9 and thus the Xbox 360 (FPS) and Nintendo Wii (FUN) are consoles of THIS generation whereas the Playstation 3 (RPG) is a console of the next generation… or at least most of us sure hope so.
This whole “my discs are bigger than yours” -thing is getting ridiculous. Nobody was bitching about it when C-64 was around and some games were on 11 tapes which you had to change every 2 minutes (or even more often). I can’t believe people these days are so lazy that they can’t get off their lazy ass every 5 hours to switch a DVD… I bet that the Nintendo Wii gives you people nightmares (All that movement… the horror! You might even sweat).
Again, don’t confuse movies with games. Nobody should be forced to walk over to their DVD player and flip the disc over (DVD18 ftfl, they get fingerprints no matter how you hold them) to watch the rest of the movie. It kills the moment.
Well done shit for brains, once again your facts are screwed up. Halo 3’s game is on one disc.
I love this site, makes me laugh all day long.
360 aside, did you honestly say that the 3 disks in FFVII were annoying? It’s not like you had to constantly change them, each disk other than maybe the last one had several solid hours to them…(must not comment on Heavenly Sword)…other than that, everything else has been covered by guys above me.
