September NPDs: Sony on top once again
The chart says it all. Sony has once again topped both Nintendo and Microsoft in September’s U.S. NPD sales charts. One must wonder how well Sony will do now that the $399 PS3s are hitting store shelves.
It’s also worth nothing that the Halo series is indeed showing a decline in popularity and system selling power.

NPD reported that in the US, Xbox 360 was the #1 console for the month; outselling PS3 5:1

Those arent unit sold, those are units shipped. I wouldent put it past microsoft to count their replacement units as units shipped.
I am guessing factually the 360 Sales is around 20% less than that while sony sales is only about 1% less than that.
Either way, adding all the sony family together is kind of destroying the purpose of the chart.
Also, put up a comparison for 1 year ago. You will see that at this time in its life span, the 360 also only had pushed out around 150-170, while right now sony is pushing 170-180.

Nintendo family: 997,000 and thats just 2 consoles as opposed to the sony family with about 602,000 and 3 consoles. and Halo 3 sold 3.3 million.

From a pure hardware standpoint, I think the PS3 is now a better deal than the Xbox 360 Premium.
The larger hard drive, the built-in wireless adapter and the Blu-ray movie player are simply a phenomenal deal for a mere 50 bucks extra.
But the PS3 price cut does finally make the console attractive, both for the crush of indiscriminate Christmas shoppers in the next few weeks and for the discerning gamers waiting until early next year for blockbusters such as Metal Gear Solid 4 and LittleBigPlanet.
Plus, Microsoft is going to be under a lot of pressure once the Halo 3 effect wears off to slash the 360’s price to stay ahead of the PS3.
I 100% agree with ps3up it is a great deal not to mention the linux possibilities, im going to give my mom my computer and surf the net with the ps3 and play the great upcoming games.

MS already slashed the prices once. Everytime Sony tries to slash prices, it doesn’t stick long. I’m interested to see how the $400 PS3 does, to see if Sony discontinues this one too, or just bumps the price back up. Sony doesn’t have any money to do these things.
As for backward compat, if it can’t play all games, it won’t make much different if it doesn’t play any. Either way, you’re probably going to need that PS2 or original Xbox for at least one or two games in your library (I certainly do, I’ve got a big library).

Yeah the price drop is attractive to the regular consumer in all regards, but when they goto the store and see not alot of titles (not multible copies of one game) on the shelf as oppoesed to the 360 or Wii it’s makes the consumer wonder.
I mean by “wonder” is why pay $400 for a console that has maybe just over a half a case when I could get the competitions console and it has more software to offer.

Ok, SDF aside, let’s quit with the name calling and actually look at the system. I originally had a problem with the PS3 for these reasons:
1. Cost
2. Bugs
3. Lack of Developers (eventual lack of software)
4. Lack of confindence in Sony Marketing
5. Personal Lack of HDTV
6. Excess of Hardware
1. The cost has come down, but it’s still the most expensive. Also, there’s the exta $10 for each game. And that builds up.
2. Apparently, most of the bugs have been fixed.
3. Blu-Ray is still more expensive to develop for, so most of the best games are ports. However, Sony still has a few great studios under their belt (this upcoming Indy-wannabe from Naughty Dog looks pretty good), but Sony still lost many exclusives.
4. Practically every Sony Press Release from E3 ‘06 has been total bull. We can’t trust them. Whether or not their system’s any good, they’re still taking a beating, and like a cornered animal, they’re starting to lash out. Plus, like I said earlier, how much longer are the major Sony execs going to put up with SCE’s losses?
5. I don’t have an HDTV yet. And that goes for more than 50% of the American Population. And on a normal TV, all the systems look alike. You’re not going to get that major Blu-Ray/HD-DVD resolution on a regular tube.
6. It’s always the inferior system that ends up leading the cycle. The most advanced doesn’t always end up flopping, but usually. It’s tough to see how Sony’s future will be.
It’s a very dangerous game to play. Sony seems to be doing a little better, and I’d like to see how well the 40gig version goes, but I need to watch and wait.

went to the shops yesterday, saw about 15 games in the PS3 section (4-5 of them were PS3 exclusive), Wii had in excess of about 30 and the Xbox360 had about 40 games sitting right next to another 50 Xbox games.
i guess itll force people into EB Games for those “trade in 20 PS2 games and a working console and save $100 on a New PS3!” rip-offs

All systems have there positives and negatives the ps3 has sold 5 million units so a 178% increase in sales IS a big deal which cant be compared to had 0 units sold and selling 1. This follows the September 360 rush, as gamers eager to snap up some Halo 3 action pushed sales of Microsoft’s console above that of Wii.
But on the week ending 21 October, European 360 sales settled at 37,000 – bottom of the current-generation list by a fair shot.
Meanwhile, here recent PS3 price cuts, which saw the launch of a cut-down 40GB PS3 for £299 and the 60GB model slashed to £349, has launched PS3 sales to a touch over 64,000 in the same week, falling just 6,000 sales short of Wii.
There’s still no contest for DS though, which sold 171,000 in Europe last week according to VGChartz figures, and will surely soon outnumber humans on the planet.

Why are all you PS3rd place fanboys still whining about the PS3 starting a year late? First of all, you have no one to blame but Sony. They waited way too long for the blue ray drive technology and it caused a huge delay in shipping the consoles. Secondly, with the software line-up we have seen from Sony so far, theres no way they would have sold as many consoles as the 360. Look at the great games the 360 had accumulated by the one year mark, and compare that to Sony’s lineup as of now… And most importantly, you cant say that Sont is right where Microsoft was at the one year point because the PS3 has been out for a year and it just under 5 million consoles. Double that, and you get 10 million consoles…. The Xbox 360 just surpassed the 12 million console mark… So you can double the PS3 sales and they are still in 3rd place by over 2 million consoles!!! Try thinking about these things before whining next time!

VGcharts is a more accessable, I would say it is good for a quick reference, and their numbers are out much quicker than the NDP numbers, which is probably the reason for the difference in quality.

No, actually it was widely reported that the blue ray drive was the reason that the PS3 launch was delayed. Not because of technical issues or because they wanted to make sure their system was bug free. If Sony was smart they would have learned their lesson with the UMD and not bet the life of their console on an unproven technology… (Like UMD and Blue Ray) But I guess thats why they are in 3rd place huh? I do give you Sony fanboys props though. A lot of people were sony fanboys because of the PS2, and for good reason. But I know a lot of them jumped ship when the PS3 came out and performed as poorly as it has…. At least you guys stick with your guns. I will at least credit you that.
Actually, there were technical issues with the Blu-ray. In fact, 90% of the PS3’s problems stem from Blu-ray.
First, the delays: the PS 1&2 were just CD and DVD ROMs with a little hardware slapped on. With the PS3, they just bumped it up to Blu-ray, and added Cell. Neither wanted to work with the Playstation hardware, and the design team (whose leader was almost fired after the launch) had to do backflips to get the damned thing running by late last summer.
The Bugs: they all stem either directly from the Blu-ray hardware or because Sony ran out of money to fix them.
Lack of games: SCE lost most of their developers and exclusives because Blu-ray is so expensive to produce for.
Price: Blu-ray cost double in production than HD-DVD.
And so forth. Sony should have learned from Beta, let alone UMD. In fact, UMD has done better than any other Sony format. I guess they thought they were making a breakthrough.

Last gen the xbox was second and gamecube was third. there was no reason to say “xbox second place” or “GameThird” unless you wanted to disrespect the owners of those systems. good call Six1s. Thats why the 360 is doing well. Microsoft figured out what they did wrong with the first one and fixed it. sony has gotten full of themselfs from the PS1 PS2 so they think they ‘know’ what people want. So its about time they felt defeat. Look at what it did for Nintendo, the Wii is the top selling console bar none and this is because the Gamecube did so poorly. Nintendo has learned from this and improved where it counts. sony may very well make a totally awesome system next gen but this system seems like a turkey. It can do alot of things, but it cant do one thing well.
and before anyone says anything about the graphics or storage of the blu-ray or what not, the Wii proves you dont need great graphics or huge/hi res textures to make a truly great and fun game. Seeing as thats what sony has put so much of its stock in its no wonder they arnt doing so well.
The Atari 2600 proved you don’t need great hardware, and the NES, and the SNES, and the PS1, and the PS2, need I continue?
The PS3 totally left its forefathers’ path (and Sony lost the one guy that got them into games in the first place). If anything, the PS3 is following in the Gamecube’s footsteps, trying to introduce a new format and be the most powerful.
Meanwhile, the 360 is doing great cause it got in there early and beat its competitors to the punch. The original Xbox did okay; there was nothing really wrong with it. People just already had their allegiances. The Xbox mostly had to compete with the PC market.
But the Wii, being the most inferior of the systems, is definately the winner this cycle.

The k98 bolt rifle used in WWII is still seen in some back water nations, heck US soldiers in Vietnam faced captured Mg34s, Mg42s anything the russians can hand them, just as effective in Vietnam as they were decades earlier.

my deer rifle is a k98, its a good rifle for shooting deer, but I could not imagine how stupid you would have to be to bring one into a combat zone, you would get one shot off and then get torn to ribbons by a guy with an assault rifle. oh, and by the way, what you said makes no sense, its an expression, you would have to be stupid to think it really had anything to do with guns, by guns it refers to arguments or your position on something, not firearms.
