October NPD: Sony on top once again
The chart says it all again this month. Xbox 360’s sales dropped off by more than 30% this month, despite Microsoft releasing its most important title in its history — Halo 3. The Sony family once again reclaimed its throne for the month, pushing impressive hardware sales through the retail channel.
With Sony reaffirming its dominance in the US coupled with waning sales of the Wii in Japan, Sony is poised to easily win this generation. We don’t blame consumers for choosing the Playstation brand: it’s associated with superior quality. The competition simply cannot compete.

Ah…I always love SDF’s spin on the NPD numbers. It’s just awesome how you lump together PS3, PS2 and PSP, then compare them to the sales of 360 and Wii by themselves, and claim that Sony is winning. The fact remains that Nintendo is on top, and 360 still beat the crap out of all 3 Sony systems individually, with PS3 gaining an abysmal 2,000 units over the previous month, in spite of the release of Ratchet & Clank in October. This is great. According to a recent AP article, the PS3 sales doubled with the advent of the 40g. That means they went from 30,000 a week up to 60,000. And they’re still nowhere close to “their throne!” That’s still less than the PSP.

no mr. fatmon, microsoft do not make PC’s, that make PC operating systems, PC’s are hardware, OS’s are software. this might explain the fact that the 360 has so many easily fixed design flaws, such as, external power brick, no protectors on the disk drive, the whole rrod mess etc. if it weren’t for those problems, believe me, i would have gotten a 360 by now.
(1) this is the same chart used in the previous ’sale’ blogs.
(2) according to charts the PS3 sold 3rd, Wii 4th, and the 360 between the PS2 and the Gameboy Micro. that leaves DSL at #1 and PSP at #2.

I’m actually surprised that SDF doesn’t put all the TVs, stereos and other electronics that Sony actually makes money on in the Sony section… Of course they’d leave out that sort of stuff for N and MS.
I think they are doing a good job of putting the nails in the PS3 coffin. They point out the obvious death of the PS3 to everyone who can think rationally. I honestly don’t think the PS3’s death is as certain as they make it seem with the obviously fake press. Not that it’s going to survive on it’s supposed merits, but because Sony has deep pockets. It will probably end up having a lot of 1st party titles and the poor people who just bought a PS3 will be so starved for something to do that they’ll buy them, as evidenced by the people who have bought the shit that has come out already. But mostly people buy it as a BluRay player.

Just before i say this i am a proud PS3 fan and prefer it to the other to consoles, that said you have to laugh at this statistics for a number of reasons.
#1. Xbox 360 is a 2 year old console now and the PS3 has been out for a far shorter time, so of course it is outselling it.
#2. If you are going to count the sony family as one statistic, that includes sales of PS2’s and PSP’s, surely then you should count nintendo Wii and Nintendo DS as 1 statistic and it would be far supiriour in sales to the sony family, and now you metion it, why not use the microsoft family and see how windows OS computers are selling in comparison to PS3’s? =)
Well Sony’s PS3 sales will pick up yes, however at this point the 360 does have a bigger user base, and the Wii has it’s really friggen big user base. So really for Sony it’s now a game of getting up to the numbers that the Wii and 360 have…
Also note that more then likely all 3 along with the DS and PSP (and yes I plan on getting a PSP, I can’t help it put Darth Vader on it and I’ll buy.) Will do insanely well this xmas. However the PS3 may not do ‘as’ well as the Wii and 360…
It just boils down to games. The Wii has the new Mario title and it’s other sellers. The 360 has Halo 3, BioShock, Mass Effect. Right now the PS3 just doesn’t offer as much. And before you give me the “But Blue-Ray!” People are still buying plan old DVD’s, chances are DVD’s will still be the big seller this xmas.

What we should do, when editing the SDF stats, is not combine Nintendo, but separate out Sony. For the PS3, that would bring the bar about half-way through the Sony icon, PS2 about the top of the icon, and PSP just shy of 300,000.
@xeacons: that would take half an hour extra editing, meh, the company’s success is not built on it’s single console, it is built on the overall system sales of their entire company, and with the 360 being the only microsoft system getting microsoft money, thats the microsoft family, but nintendo is bypassing them all, hooray, would have been so sad to see a company like nintendo to go the way of sega.

MGS, Final Fantasy, Haze, tekken, killzone2 and GT are NOT on store shelves as of yet, so stop saying crap like that cause it don’t make sense (and what if they all kinda suck, then you got egg on your face).

Tekken is the best fighting game if you like your characters to control like hunks of wood.
GT is the best racer is you hate accurate physics and crash damage.
Cant really say anything about socom cause I never played it.
MGS is actually kinda good, and my MGS I mean the first one. Went down hill after that. I suppose it can be called best stealth game cause I havent played many, cause I dont like them.
Ratchet and Clank is the best platformer if you have never heard of Mario.
And Final Fantasy is the best JRPG (Japanese Role Playing Game). Again, I hate the genre so I cant argue that.
Your comment would be 100% accurate if you just said: “These are the best games on sony consoles.” When you try to compair some/most of them to games on other systems I wouldnt call them the best of anything.

Scored perfect first time on the GT vs RL test there. The cars that looked ‘to perfect’ were the in game cars. The game looks good, Ill give it that. But I cant get over the fact that theres still no crash damage in the game. Ive heard its going to have a better physics engine but I doubt it will be as good as Forza 2’s. And without crashes I know there will not be damage to affect car handling and preformance.

well the damage in forza is unrealistic
the devs making gt said realistic damage is to hard to do but in a realistic driving sim would you want to slam right into another car? leave that for pgr, burnout, need for speed and off road racers like motorstorm and dirt

The damage may not ‘look’ as realistic as it would if you actually crashed a car. Thats not the point though. The damage in Forza and Dirt effects the cars handling and performance (i wonder how many times Im going to type). If you lose the front bumper, back bumper, windows, spoiler, etc. your aerodynamics are effected. If you take a strong hit to the front and you engine is there its not going to run right anymore, may even screw up the transmission. If you get hit on the side near the front your steering will get all gibbered up. True you dont want to run into the back of someone, but in Forza and Dirt theres a penalty for it. In GT theres nothing to stop you from driving dirty and bumping people all over the place. We will see if they add ‘downloadable damage’. I personally thing that paying extra (if they charge) for something that should be in the game already doesnt make much sense. Its one thing to buy cars, tracks, levels, weapons, planes, etc. but making you buy damage is something else. Its like getting a first person shooter where the enemy doesnt die unless you buy a ‘death downloadable’
When you smash head on into something at a high speed, that’s it, the race should be over for you! You shouldn’t be able to put her in reverse then get right back onto the track, then drive off at full speed like nothing happened. In this respect Forza is the more realistic of the two.
So to me that’s two genre’s that Japanese devs suck at, Rpgs, and Racing games.
Dont forget First Person Shooters.
And so you know, if you smash your car into a wall in Forza you probably wont be driving off very well. Basically if your steering goes or if the engine gets damaged your not going to finish 1st, maybe even not at all. Also theres tire wear that effects your car, you also have a fuel gauge that as the gas is used this effects the weight of the car which effects handling. But you cant totally kill it.
Now Dirt however, with the damage turned all the way up its quite easy to get terminal damage. Then boom, the race is over. But Dirt doesnt have a fuel gauge and I dont think it keeps track of tire temp, maybe not even tire wear. Also Im not sure if losing body panels effect aerodynamics.

I just saw a commercial for Assassin’s Creed and it said stuff like “10 out of 10: Electronic Gaming Monthly” and “5 out of 5: Playstation Magazine”. I had this wonderful vision of a Ratchet And Clank Commercial that said “10.5 Out of 10: Sony Defense Force”.

Apparently the Wii is twice as powerful as the Gamecube which was more powerful than the PS2, the Wii COULD make nice cutscene games but the thrid parties are sucking.
I can do this too, The PS3 is the most powerful system out now. It COULD have some really great looking games but the games are few and far between and arn’t very good.
It obvious the Wii is winning so the best thing you can do is try and make fun of it? Games the rely on cutscenes to much doesnt make for a good game. Also, the third party games may not be very good, but the first party titles are better that both the PS3 and 360. Which may have alot to do with why they are winning right now.

I own a Wii. Wasn’t making fun. Was merely upping the actual system so people realise it isan’t nintendo’s fault for non graphical games which could be released and to open up the hopes of one graphical (prob fps) coming out.
I disagree, the great thing about the Final Fantasy’s was playing the story. Always playing to find out the next bit, without the storylines of final fantasy they would be nothing, i enjoy the RPG side and love the stories they make. The Cutscenes add to the effect of the story which make it some of my favourite games to play.
Resident evil would be nothing without a story, just killing random zombies for no reason? It’d be boring, but with a story it becomes interesting, cutscenes add to all storylines. Most games i play (except from things like worms) would be shockingly bad without story, which cutscenes enhance. therefore i disgregard ur statement from my mind.
You’re right. Without cutscenes FF would be NOTHING…because that’s all it is, random encounters, and cutscenes. Stories can be done, and done WELL without space eating movies.
I rather skip FF gameplay and just watch cutscense. I don’t mind playing thru FF1-FF7, FF8+ and so on are just boring and the same. SquareEnix need to make some change. Like Bioware doing, from Baldur’s Gate > BG2 > NW > Kotor > Mass Effect.
a Mere example, so many games would be nothing without the storyline, and i only say cutscenes enhance the story and the experience. If you want great graphicless cutsceneless games, go play on the CD32.

i am a normal JRPG player, hell you guys have blue dragon, you dont see me complaining about the completely unoriginal dragon quest-ish battle system, i love final fantasy, because:
1. it’s the king of jrpg’s
2. the stories are always fresh and i dont get bored of them
3. battle system and levelling system change in almost every game
every game has cutscenes, any game with a part where the characters all move on their own and following scripted events and such, is technically a cutscene game, while the final fantasy franchise does it a hell of a lot more than most games, i dont know how i could show a story as deep as most final fantasy games by having nothing but gameplay.
and hey, any 360 user loves halo, when i ask anyone why it’s so awesome they say “it sold heaps” so i’ll just go ahead and say the same for the final fantasy franchise…

In fact that’s how the game plays out, they deliver a story through realtime stuff throughout. The game offerse hundreds of hours of gameplay, and it all fits onto a DVD, know why? Because there isn’t a bunch of un-needed CGI bullshit to muck it all up. The game tells the story perfectly without!

six1s, you have to remember, the cutscene at the starts MAKES the story, but good on the guys for making a relatively cut scene-less game with such a good story, still… i didn’t care much for the story, it’s like, the king knows who you are, you’re in jail for some reason. you break out with the king, he doesn’t do anything to prevent his death. he doesn’t explain to anyone why he believes you, you get out of jail, you go to sleep one night, you wake up a guy is standing next to you and says “hey, wanna join our secret evil cult? just go kill this guy” you go kill him, join the cult, do missions for them, and in the end it’s all in vain as you kill them eventually, then you remember you’re supposed to be saving the world, so you go and close an oblivion gate, then you go to a town, and a guy is trapped in a painting, you go around killing painted enemies, get out he gives you an apron for saving his life, then you close another oblivion gate.
sorry to say… a deep story has to make sense.

3 easy steps to help you grow a brain:
1) Drop your PS3 from a 30 foot building (if you did that in a PS3 game, the game would freeze up because it is to much for your console to process)
2) Buy a Xbox360
3) Buy a game such as Assassins Creed…yes I know that PS3 has it too but our game takes 30 hours of constant gameplay to make it freeze…YOURS only takes 1 hour…finally you beat us in something)

With the PS1 it was great timing and Nintendo and Sega screwing up with their systems. Along with the ‘next gen’ systems being bombs. The 3D0? Powerful and somewhat of a good idea. However it was over priced, and the games for it sucked at the time as most where the god awful FMV games of the day. The CD-I? Same thing and really bad controls. The Atari Jaguar had one good game (Aliens vs Predator) other then that sucked. And Nintendo was putting out the N64 that was somewhat behind the times, and the Virtual Boy that sucked. Also Sega had done the 32X and Saturn, both doing not so well.
The PS1 just came in at the right time, yes it was a good system. However again all that was out there was really the Saturn and N64.
As for the PS2, it had a few things going for it. It sold big over in Japan at first due to it being Japans first DVD Player. Know what the biggest selling software was for the PS2 in Japan when it came out? The Matrix on DVD, in the US it was the hype behind it. Also the Dreamcast tho a great system was hurt by it’s ad’s and the like here in the States. Sorry but the whole Dreamcast ‘hiphop’ ad’s showing off Ready 2 Rumble didn’t help the system.
Also add in that the Xbox was priced higher then the PS2 when it came out. And Nintendo was just late to the game if you will.
So no those lies didn’t help them at all, what helped is Sony being at the right place at the right time. And really if you look at it, Sony pulled an N64 for the most part with the PS3. It’s hard to develop games for, it’s still priced higher then the Wii and 360, it has a ‘few’ good games where as Microsoft and Nintendo are offering more. Microsoft hands down has the better online system for play with Xbox Live. And the big thing is, Sony spent the last year selling it more as a Blue-Ray Player rather then a Gaming System.

What I do want to argue is number 2. I would agree that this generation started with the Dreamcast. It was lightyears beyond the PS1 and N64, and we havent seen a jump like that sense. Also, remember when everyone keeped talking about the Bit rates of their systems? The PS1 had 32 bits, an Nintendo had 64 in the N64 (hence the name). Well the Dreamcast, Gamecube, PS2, and Xbox have 128. So do the 360, PS3, and Wii. They dont make a big deal outta it because it doesnt sound better than last ‘gen’.
So thats the hardware, what about the games? They look better Right? Sure they do. But is that what generations are measured by? They are getting closer and closer to looking real life. But they dont, no matter how hard they try they still look like video games. And until they do I wouldnt say its anything more than Last gen with better graphics. I would also mark a new Generation by a extreme improvement in AI. Both in game and the hardware itself. If it started to ‘think’ on its own then yeah, It would be the next great thing.
So no, this Generation hasnt been that spectacular. The games look better, but its still the same ol’ crud from the last consoles.
i would like them to stick with current graphics, and build better gameplay engines, physics engines and such, and perhaps use massive disc space to have a huge game world, and a long single player mode, instead of cramming it with massive textures and such.

Im not sure, i could be wrong, but I would think it would be safe to assume that everyone copied 3D from PC gaming. I dont feel like checking the dates or anything, Im just guessing that if anyone one did it first at that time it would be a PC programer.
Halo 3 isnt the only perpetrator. Heavenly Sword seems to be using the Graphics over Gameplay model as well. So instead of pointing a finger at one title (lame as it maybe) you should point it at the entire industry. In rare cases there are games that focus on the game play or story over the graphics, but when it comes to the top of the line, super hyped, big named titles this is usually not the case. The one game I can think that didnt focus on the graphics and the game play was outstanding was Portal. It may have been short but my God was it a great game. Games like that, to me, are truly next gen.

Well in terms of ‘3d’ games…
We had the Ultima games that did have 3d Dungeons. Not fully 3d but 3d none the less… Hell Ultima Underworld was fully 3d and way ahead of it’s time.
The SNES had F-Zero, Pilotwings, Starfox, Doom (even tho it looked bad) Wolfenstein 3d. Other games had some 3d ‘elementals’ in them as well. Or had ‘3d’ levels like the Super Star Wars line of games.
So yes other systems had 3d games LONG before the PS1 came out.
I eagerly await the day that “The Sony Family” gets outsold by the Wii or the DS alone. SDF is so awesome that you just know they’ll spin it somehow.

Well yeah true 3d gaming didn’t really take off untill Wolfenstein 3d came out (which was between 1990-92. But before that (i think) John Carmack did a game called Catcombs 3d but that wasn’t very successful.
