HD-DVDEAD: Warner puts the final nail in the coffin for dying format

Warner

In a stunning, but not surprising, announcement early Friday afternoon, Warner ended the format wars by vowing exclusive support to Sony’s Blu-Ray format. The details of this announcement are sure to resonate across the industry as Blu-Ray now holds 80% of the studio support, leaving Universal and Paramount the only studios left on HD-DVDEAD’s payroll.

Bill Gates

Luckily for HD movie fans, Warner sided with logic rather than moneyhats that Micro$oft uses in their subversive attempt at stifling the adoption of HD movies. Warner, keenly aware of Micro$oft’s motivations in supporting HD-DVDEAD, sees that the future of creating one format for the next-generation optical disc format is crucial to sustaining the $40 billion dollar industry. They understand that Micro$oft never wanted a clear HD victor; rather, they wanted to make sure that Blu-Ray would never become popular, thus undermining one of the main strengths of the Playstation 3 and keeping consumers away from the product. Once the stalemate was assured, Micro$oft would attept to woo studios over to their failed digital distribution plans. Warner made the right move by turning down over $500 million dollars in moneyhats from Micro$oft and effectively ended the format war, free of charge, in Sony’s favor.

And who can blame them? Only Micro$oft shills supported HD-DVDEAD from the start. It’s not rocket science to see that Blu-Ray is the true successor to DVD: it sports pristine 1080p quality that is delivered through 50 GBs of data and 54 Mbs bitrate while HD-DVDEAD was a stillborn format with specifications that barely beat out DVD — only a paltry 30 GBs of data and 36 Mbs. Moreover, Sony has always had the majority of studio support on their side: Sony, MGM, Lionsgate, Fox, Disney, and now Warner. The trojan horse of the Playstation 3 has compelled the industry to support Blu-Ray in record numbers as the onslaught of the new media format outpaced its rival by more than 2:1.

Bill Gates 3

The Micro$oft shills kept on proclaiming the next big thing would win the war — “Chinese players”, they said, would mark the end of Blu-Ray and victory for Micro$oft. Once the Chinese players never materialized, the roaring crowd of mouthbreathing Micro$oft shills proclaimed that “Paramount will decide the war”, and so Transformers and Shrek came and went with HD-DVDEAD never managing to outpace Blu-Ray for a single week. After this failure, the fans yet again stated that “$99 dollar HD-DVDEAD players would win the war”, and so we saw that standalone Blu-Ray player, despite being priced far above their HD-DVDEAD counterparts, outsold the competition in December.

Make no mistake about it — HD-DVDEAD was truly HD-DOA. Blu-Ray outsold the now confirmed dead format 52-0 this year. That’s right — Blu-Ray won every single week of ’07 in terms of media sales. The writing was on the wall. You truly do have to laugh at the clowns that decided to buy into the whole “360 add on”. What a waste.

This revelation made such an impact on the industry that HD-DVDEAD has canceled its HD-DVDEAD CES 2008 press conference, likely in preparation of raising a white flag. In the coming weeks and months you will see Universal go neutral, Paramount find a backdoor clause in their contract so they can abandon the dead format, retailers abandoning red covered titles in order to make space for their superior blu counterparts, and the industry will be in harmony once again with Sony as their leader.

Bill Gates 2

It’s been an amazing ride so far in ’07, but for the new year Sony has already started out with a bang — a bang that has killed their biggest rival and set the path for over $20 billion dollars in potential profits from their Blu-Ray incentives. With the killer lineup of exclusive Playstation 3 titles in ’08 coupled with the victorious format in Blu-Ray, Sony is poised to reclaim not only the next-gen media throne, but also crowned in the videogame arena. We are one step closer to Micro$oft’s inevitable death in the console arena, and we couldn’t be more pleased.

  3. 2008 truly is Sony’s year. We’re not even a week in and they actually have some good news to offset the clusterfuck that was 2007.
Now all they need to do is announce some good games and another price cut, and they’ll be set.

  4. lolz? if you actually could write an article without your l33t skillz then it would be something to read.

  5. Dear SDF,

Please shut up until anyone gives a shit.

    Sincerely,

Seriously, whether HD-DVD or Blu-Ray started winning, most people, including myself, couldn’t give less of a damn. I personally think that HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are both failed formats. Doesn’t the 360 have a service where you can download HD movies anyway? I don’t have one, so I have no idea.

People have chosen simplicity over video quality anyway. You know about YouTube? You know how RIDICULOUSLY popular that site is? Sure, there are other factors involved, but the fact is that it has quality far lower than any TV, but not that many people have complained at all, really.

Then again, this site is and always has been a joke, but yeah.

  6. So…Paramount going HD-DVD only doesn’t mean shit, but this does? Hmm…

LOL! Bill Gates has NOTHING to do with any of this.
He stepped down from MS years back.
Do you think that he’s worried about HD-DVD?
No, he’s at home, lying in a tub full of MONEY!
Oh and *looks at his disc collection and doesn’t see a single HD-DVD or Blu-ray.*
Also, that Magenta cock was stolen from b3ta, get your own shit SDF!

Paramount’s exclusivity deal with HD-DVD is short term. There’s about 12 months left on the contract, and even that has a Spielberg clause that states that all Paramount movies directed by Steven Spielberg will be format neutral.

In addition, Microsoft’s digital distribution service will never overtake hard copies. A true HD videophile (basically the demographic leading the HD market) doesn’t want to deal with the poor compression resulting from making the video files bandwidth-friendly. Not to mention that most collectors feel more comfortable owning hard copies, not just for the disc, but for the case, inlay, and covers.

Granted, Warner’s move to Blu was motivated by FOX and their $500 million dollar offer to not go HD exclusive, but a definitive choice in the HD format war is exactly what Hollywood needs. If HD-DVD won, I would happily go buy an HD-DVD player, but as it stands now, it appears that I’m fine with my PS3.

Also, to anyone who doesn’t understand the satire here (read: all of you 12-16 year old fanboys of both the Microsoft and Sony persuasion) use a little bit of common sense before replying. You’re making yourselves look like total jackasses on the internet. If news posted here is fake or altered it’s just to get a rise out of you, and shouldn’t be taken seriously.

  9. Blu-ray and Hd-DVD isn’t worth a shit unless one of them win, original DVD is still the king. HD-DVD isn’t from Microsoft stupid, it’s from Toshiba. So what’s the point of showing picture of Bill Gate, it should be about Toshiba. If Blu-ray wins, Microsoft could switch to Blu-ray or they have something better in their sleeve. I think Bill Gate want both to fail so he can become a hero by presenting something better than those formats right now.

I’m still waiting and still proud to stick with original DVDs because both formats are waste of money right now.

  10. Btw SDF, I’ve seen about 4 good news for PS3 today from The Digg. How come I don’t see that on this site.

  11. charleytony Says:

A far as Im concerned bothformats are idiots. If they would have settled on a format that suited both of them nobody would be in any trouble…
This format war will only mean that the NEXT movie format will come sooner and when every body is on the same page…

As if DVDs had become obsolete just because someting a litlle better came out …

  12. Either in blu-ray or HD-DVD; a shit movie is still a shit movie. Goodfella’s is still a great movie no matter what format it’s on. According to this site a movie is a lot better on a specific format than the other. That logic is just stupid.

  13. It’s the quality of the movie, not the resolution that makes a good flick, and the same goes for games as well (more storage space doesn’t equal a better game. GOT THAT SDF)

  14. @ DaPWNz0r

You do know people said the same thing about DVD vs VHS a while back, VHS is nearly gone now. When prices get lower, the consumer will start buying the better product usually.

  15. @lumina

you didnt need to buy a new tv to upgrade from VHS to DVD, you do to go to an HD format, therefore your comparison is invalid. also, I dont recall anyone ever saying that.

and because everyone only looks at the most recent article I will disect your attempt to explain the COD4 ps3 vs. 360 sales discrepency

“Perhaps because Call of Duty 4 really isn’t that good of a game?”
This has absolutly nothing to do with anything, and furthermore isnt true. Check metacritic if you dont believe me.

“I’ve grown to hate Call of Duty games since Call of Duty 2″
    alright.
“i hated how they changed the gameplay.”
that is a perfectly valid opionion.
“The Original on PC was the best Call of Duty”
I would agree with you there.
“atleast Call of Duty 3 they tried to change it a bit”
change what exactly? The gameplay? Didnt you just say you hated COD2 for changing?
“give more reason multiplayer wise than run around shooting eachother brainlessly. lol”
uhhh…. hate to break it to you, but “give more reason multiplayer wise” doesnt mean anything and suggests to me that either English is not your first langauge or that you are a moron.

And that Videophiles are “basically the demographic leading the HD market” does not bode well, as they are only a small portion of movie watchers.

As for my opionion of HD, show me standard def and High def side by side and I can tell the difference. Just show me a movie and I really wont notice the difference.

“If news posted here is fake or altered it’s just to get a rise out of you, and shouldn’t be taken seriously”
We know. We’ve known for months. Its a parody, we understand that. Someone makes this comment about every other article post, sometimes more frequently, you didnt make any sort of discovery. Personally, I dont even read the articles anymore, just respond to what people say. And just to reiterate, we know.

  17. @ Fatman

Amazed you seriously care so much to take that much effort into a reply.

When I refered to Call of Duty 3 attempted change. That was really because even Call of Duty the original was getting kind of boring. It after a while despite the expansion adding vehicles and a few pretty large maps became old after a while. Call of Duty 2 had gameplay issues that annoyed me like instent thrown grenades, the HP system which reminded me of shield charge on a Halo game for example, and yet Call of Duty 2 reused meny of the old maps I already got insanely bored of on Call of Duty, rather than making some outstanding new ones, not saying there were not new ones, but i was kind of hoping they’d have something like Foy, something a tad larger, I do hate small maps.

Call of Duty 3 though similar tried to add a class system in multiplayer which was always a fun thing on alot of games. I mean most games that allow it, I’d rather be a supporting role player than some yahoo with a assault rifle going around killing people, I got enough of the boring running around shooting people long ago, definity with how mindless the game feels online, to the point I get into a trans almost anymore and would get shocked when I come out not with the worlds worst kill ratio, trans = boring, which means I’m really no longer wake when playing the game, my heart no longer pounds hard and I never get that exciting rush i used to.

Why I said Call of Duty 4 is bad. Is because it does feel just like all the other Call of Duty games which I’m already highly bored of. Like I said earlier it just feels like Call of Duty 2 but without my favorite weapons the bolt rifles to entertain me a bit, since i do hate running around rushing with an assault weapon, that is what turns me into a zombie after about 15 minutes of playing.

  18. Yeah Blu-ray makes for the best games! That’s why I spend hours on end playing Umbrella Chronicles, but see nothing I care to play on the Blu-ray station 3.

  19. “Call of Duty 3 though similar tried to add a class system in multiplayer which was always a fun thing on alot of games.”

sounds like you would like team fortress. and it also sounds like you ignore the single player aspect of it.

and the english was much better this time, the only thing you screwed up is that “trans” isnt a word, its a prefix, as in transfat. You are looking for “Trance”

  20. anyone who can check out kkrieger, it is a good reason why blu-ray is a waste of time in a video game console.

“According to a trusted source that was close to the negotiations, Warner and FOX were working on a deal to go Exclusive to HD DVD as recent as last week. Our source tells us that Warner was only willing to go to HD DVD if FOX would go with them. Their thinking was if they just went to HD DVD by themselves, it would not end the format war. Early this week FOX was paid an undisclosed amount to remain exclusive to Blu-ray. With the FOX deal falling through, Warner had no choice but to accept the BDA’s $500 Million offer to go Blu-ray exclusive. We do wonder if FOX was just playing the HD DVD side, while having no intentions of ever switching.”
    This I found on NG4 and cheatcc.com I believe.

  22. Just sold my Xbox 360 + HD-DVD add on with 200 HD-DVD movies and picked up Playstation 3 and about 300 Blu-Ray movies so far.

It’s awesome having the superior videogame system and format all in one package.

  23. the way i see it, PS3 is only really selling cos people see it as the cheapest blu-ray player, no-one is buying a Xbox 360 because it has the add-on for a HD-DVD drive, the way i see it, PS3 and Xbox360 sales comparisons are flawed. The sales for xbox 360 are all because it is a great console for gaming, people are buying a PS3 because its a cheap High-Def Movie player.
Microsoft will not loose any customers or business whilst Sony may take on a few. such news isn’t going to be splashed across page 1 or shouted from the street corner buy a down on his luck school boy proclaiming “Extra Extra!”

yes, sony, toshiba, MS, etc. have been bribing movie companies since day 1.
i dont see any other reason to give up on a format and lose SOME profit.

  29. @animekid

If sony really wants to push the Ps3 this year then they should really FOCUS on the GAMES, not what the system can do otherwise. I believe that’s been one real huge problem with the PS3; is it a gaming machine or a movie player? Well what is it Sony?
Sure they have started tv ads with game footage but is it too late for them to recover?
Where MS was smart they pushed the 360 as a gaming platform, and not a movie platform.
Is it too late for Sony to regain there former glory? Hell no.
Is it possible they can still screw it all up? Hell yeah.

  30. My 360 just got the RROD on thursday night (1 1/2 years old) and I’m not pissed. Sure I could be upset but what do I care; it’s getting fixed or replaced for free and I should have it back by the 25th of this month.

Thx for the always amuzing articles SDF.

  33. Sony are going nowhere?
    You am bests at englihses!\

  34. Sad, but not surprised.

This all comes down to Warner breathing down Sony’s neck with threats of abandonment around November. What did Sony do just two weeks later? Cut down the price of the PS3 with the new 40GB model.

Sont has always been, and firstmost an electronic company, not a gaming coming. They’re more interested in the sales of their hardware first and foremost. That’s how the made it this far… televisions, walkmans, heaphones, VCRs, DVD players, ect… They’re more interested about what they can make from the movie and music industry than what they make from the gaming industry.

This is going to be a problem for them regarding the PS3, especially to their fanbase who are expecting to get the most out of a PS3 for their gaming needs. Sony rely on the movie and music industries for all their revenue. Sure, pumping out new-gen movie viewing to the masses is going to sell a lot of PS3s because last time I checked, you’re still paying near enough $300 for a stand-alone blu ray player.

I’m disgusted… You guys have been waiting how long for MGS4 now? And what after that? The next Final Fantasy? Anyone in their right mind would of quit the FF games after FF9, unless you have a strange affinity to belts and buckles and chicks that look like Cloud and Sephiroth with different hair and different coloured eyes.

What is Sony going to provide for their fanbase after that? Are they going to be busting out new exclusive titles that take FULL advantage of the cell or are they going to be spending money on buying new releases from the movie companies that pump them out?

Just curious on much money did you make off the 360/hd-dvd player and the 200 hd-dvd movies.
Another thing is couldn’t you just afford to buy a PS3 with the amount you poured into the 360 and hd-dvds. Not only that you must have also bought alot of shit movies as well on hd-dvd and blu-ray.

  49. animekid3515,
Just whipped it out so no Sony fanboy can preach HD format = sales.

  50. I made roughly $800 dollars. I took a bit of a hit, but well worth it to have a second Blu-Ray player in my household.

I should have made a distinction earlier. I already owned a Playstation 3. But getting rid of this worthless HD-DOA player allowed me to fund my second Playstation 3 for my house.

I’m actually going to get a third PS3 later this year to put in the master bedroom.

  51. @Hans

I would say more than a “bit of a hit”. You didn’t even make half of what you spent.
    Let’s see a average HD movie (blu-ray or HDDVD)= 29.99
Assuming that you had a “360 Pro Console” and hd moveie player=349.99, 179.99.
Ok now add them up together
    200 Hd-dvd movies+360 and hd-movie player=$6527.98

You where better off keeping the 360 with all the movies. You just got royally screwed out of your money.

  52. Though I will admit I was wrong about HD-DVD vs Blu-ray.
This means the score is Sony fanboys – 1, Me – 8,994

  53. From the inquirer (yes, it’s the inquirer, but compared to this site, I’ll take it’s word):

    http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/01/08/dvd-sales-plummet

“USA Today points out that the the movie download market could be another killer. That industry is expected to double from $689 million in 2006 to $1.6 billion in 2008.

So far the high-definition war has hardly dented the figures. Only one per cent of the home-video market was on the new formats and they really are not worth bothering about.”

I have HD DVD and love it. But, if HD DVD does die, I will only get DVD. Bluray and Sony can kiss my A$$!!! And to all the $ony fanboys here, just keep in mind that Bluray was the most important part of PS3, not the games!!!! So much for Sony looking out for thier loyal gamers!!! though i’ve just seen it on ps3fanboy.com and you guys are slower than slowtaku…
i expect it, and the flaming, to come soon.
one of the big reasons that the HD war was so big, is that if blu ray failed… sony would be in a massive pinch.
new ps3′s wouldnt be able to play any of the old games and it would just be a pain in the ass…
but yeah… MS is apparently going to go blu ray if consumers demand it now that warner brothers have abandoned them…

@six1s: because MS thought that HD-DVD was going to crush blu ray into the ground and the ps3 along with it…

…I was scared that the warhawk servers were going to get shut down for a while when the war was pretty level, but since blu ray is pretty much confirmed as the HD format of choice…
that’s one thing out of their way…

Good news for Sony, considering they’re not even emphasising the games aspect of their machine any more. They’re adverts pretty much scream “BLU-RAY! BLU-RAY! BLU-RAY!” and then whisper “and it can play a few games…” at the end. It’s more of a multimedia machine than a games machine. And, for something with such a wide array of multimedia features, it’s selling poorly.

Quite frankly, dishing out thousands of pounds (in total) for something with an ever so slightly improved picture doesn’t appeal to me, particularly as I’m a person with a vast DVD collection.

I’d also like to know how people think the 360 is doomed this year when the big hitting exclusives haven’t even been mentioned yet. Granted, Sony are lucky to have Metal Gear (looks fucking good) and… Final… Fantasy… (GROAN!) on their side. As my fellow Brit Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw says, “it’s like watching anime only to pause every two minutes to fiddle with the buttons.”

  79. Hey enjoy your blu-ray movies, they’re all you’ve got.

  80. @Sony23rox

We say that about Hans anyway.

    @Six1s

He is probably right, it seems like a perfectly valid plan, right up ’till it failed anyway.

  81. and where the idea that there are no 360 exclusives this year came from is beyond me.

  82. And this hasnt been brough up here recently but I like how people say “But the ps3 and the 360 sold the same a year after their respective launches.”

The only thing I have to say to that is “Great.. Wonderful… So when is Sony going to use its time machine to go back and launch at the same time as the 360?”

  83. I honestly couldn’t give two shits about this stuff, I’m sticking with my DVD player

and guess why, because like most people, i don’t have a fucking HD TV. Blu-Ray and HD aren’t going to take the market lead for years so this whole war is just an exercise in futility.

  84. Ey I have a Blue-ray and thats why Blue-ray will
    win

Truly the greatest argument for Blu-ray I’ve ever seen. It starts with a non-word, and ends with a superfluous carriage return. On top of that, it abuses the language I so dearly love. Bravo.

  86. Blu – Ray has sealed the victory for the PS3. Why, just look at the sales projections for future sales. The XBOX 360 and Wii will stop selling altogether according to your chart and WB going Blu – Ray exclusive means that the 360 and Wii will go into negative sales.

@six1s: wow, how about i save Queensland from it’s water crisis while i’m at it.
the fact is, blu ray playability is a HUGE reason that the ps3 isn’t already dead, though without that drive, it’d probably be a lot cheaper…
i suppose my source is microsoft’s support of HDDVD, but sudden jump saying “you guys want blu ray? we’ll give you blu ray if you want it” now that if any winner comes out, it will most likely be blu.
honestly, apart from warhawk, eye of judgement and motorstorm online…
i’m watching blu rays on my triple waiting for that Q2 release of MGS4.
speaking of mgs4, i guess you people wonder where i get the idea that only metal gear online will be ported if sales are low.
know why? because konami, and kojima both say “metal gear solid 4 is a ps3 exclusive” but never bother to mention metal gear online…
it’s better speculation than looking at a MS equivalent to this site and taking it seriously.

  89. @animekid

If the recent attachment rates for games on the PS3 is any indication (COD4, AC, and Rock Band), it’s possible that MGS4 will come to the 360.
Really does “exclusive” mean anything anymore? In my opinion not really. Sure 1st party games are a no brainer, but 2nd and 3rd party are not owned by the the console manufacture (sony, nintendo, or MS). So for example; bungie could make a Halo game for the PS3, or Insominiac could make the next Rachet and Clank for the Wii.
I’m sure 360 owners will see MGS4 (by then it won’t matter to me, I probably went out and bought a PS3 anyway), it’s just a matter of when.

  90. Links?
I’ve never seen MS doing hardcore HDDVD support, sure they released an addon, but they never reallt pushed it.

  91. im not givin a ratass about MSG4 i don’t want to play a guy named old snake hey maybe he’ll break a hip stop makin the games or better yet he’ll die so i dont have to hear bout msg4 anymore

  92. I’m sure MGS4 will come to the 360; it’s not a question of if, it’s when?
Then again I probably owe a PS3 before that happens so I don’t give a shit.

  94. Goddammit…my last three comments are being moderated.

  95. @coldyellow

Hate to nitpick, but bungie cannot make a halo game for the PS3 for two reasons.

    1. They have a contract with microsoft that says they cant make anything for the ps3
2.I think that microsoft owns Halo now, not bungie.

  96. @fatman

I know your not nitpicking, but it was for example and the first companies to come to mind.

  97. 100th Comment!!! WOO HOOO!!!!

  98. Where’s the news about how “Sony sends inferior developer Factor 4.5 packing back to Nintendo’s kiddie console?”

  99. Right now you have a fairly balanced table between the two formats:

    Paramount and Universal: HD-DVD

    Warner Bros and MGM: Blu-Ray
Sony, needless to say, goes with it’s own format, even if Blu-Ray dies. Disney’s on their side, and making a comeback, but it really was WB that spells more trouble for HD-DVD than any other.

But all in all, the success of Blu-Ray has had little impact on the PS3 sales, any more than the 360′s success has had impact on HD-DVD sales. In the end, we’re really talking about two different mediums here: cinematography, and cybernatography. Films and games.

  100. @Xeacons

Not true, the ps3 is a fairly cheap blu-ray player. And I think alot of people have bought them to use them as Blu-ray players, you have to take that into account when comparing console sales(not everyone useing the ps3 as a gaming console, therefore you shouldnt count every ps3 sold as a gaming console, maybe around 2/3ish of them)

  101. Guess he needs to strike of that logic wins over money hats comment, since it has now be reported that it took 500 Million from Sony for Warner to go exclusive. Also that barely better than DVD comment is lauagble, DVD is only 10GB while HD-DVD has 20GB more and 5GB more than many BD releases and while it is locked at 36M that is still much higher than DVD.

  102. You know what both formats are dead! More and more people download movies and shows from the Internet. That’s what I do.

  103. MICROSOFT DID NOT CREATE THE HD-DVD FORMAT.

I’m just glad that this damned “war” is almost over. The three or five or whatever minute percent of the consumer market that cares about the next-gen movie format can finally quit their bickering and move on while everyone else enjoys their DVD’s for the next five years or so.

  106. animekid3515 Says:

I think disc size does matter…
    remember VCD?
no? that’s because nobody gave a shit.
vcd (from what i remember) had exactly the same superiorities over VHS, but nobody ended up buying it…
then DVD came, with larger storage space and no need for 2 discs a movie…
and then VHS slowly faded away.

  107. “Universal and Paramount the only studios left on HD-DVDEAD’s payroll.”

Only like the biggest producers ever?

  108. Actually, Warner sided with Blue-ray for 500 Millions $

For the uneducated Blue-ray fans out there, I just wanted to tell you that what determines 1080p or 7.1 sound is the software used. Do you remember the embarrassing blu-rays released in 2006 and early 2007? Yeah, it used mpeg2 codecs, instead of the newer and better VC1 codec, which HD DVD used from day 1.

HD DVD has always been the superior format, though bluray has one distinctive advantage: disc space. Though, if you go to hidefdigest and check blue-ray reviews, you’ll quickly notice that practically none has any bonus that DVD versions don’t, while HD DVD had bonus NEXT GEN features from day 1.

  109. And warner didn’t put the final nail to HD DVD’s coffin. They actually killed HD DVD and then others like best buy, wal mart, etc. put the final nails to the coffin.
