Sony Q3 Earnings: Absolute Domination, PS3 Outsells Xbox 360 in 2007
The doubters have been silenced. Sony has done in one year what took Microsoft 6 years to accomplish: post a profitable quarter for their gaming division. This, despite the massive costs incurred with providing state of the art Playstation 3 technology at an affordable price that includes the Cell microprocessor, Blu-Ray, a standard hard-drive, and free online play with dedicated servers.
Sony is no stranger to reporting profits; before the Playstation 3 was released Sony had dominated the videogame business for years. However, with the costly inclusion of Cell and Blu-Ray, Sony lost money on their videogame division last year on behalf of their love for gamers by providing a machine that is unrivaled at a price that could be afforded by mainstream consumers. Below are the figures reported for Q3:

These results, fresh off the heels of the reports of Sony working on a 45 nm version of Cell and shrinking the Blu-Ray diode component to 3 mm, Sony clearly has the best hardware engineers in the videogame business — and that’s what they know how to do best; run a videogame business. Microsoft was bleeding for years due to the costs of the Xbox 360, the red ring of death fiasco, and lackluster hardware/software sales. But, that’s what we’ve come to expect from Microsoft: delivering inferior hardware at inflated prices due to terrible management.
Not only has Sony’s videogame division returned to profitability, but the PS3 outsold the Xbox 360 in Q3 2007. According to their respective financial reports for Q3 earnings, Sony sold 4.9 million Playstation 3′s compared to Microsoft’s 4.3 million Xbox 360′s.
Microsoft’s LTD (lifetime-to-date) figures for Xbox 360′s sold since its launch up until Dec. 31, 2006 (roughly 14 months) amounts to 10.4 million units sold globally. In comparison, the Playstation 3′s LTD sales from launch until Dec. 31, 2007 (roughly 14 months for America and Japan and only 9 months for Europe) amounts to 10.49 million units sold with the platform not even released in Europe for a full year compared to the Xbox 360 figures. This, despite the PS3 being priced at $599 in the US and even higher in Europe, with many of its titles delayed, thus significantly lowering the software quality of its fall 2007 relative to the Xbox 360 which enjoyed Halo 3, Mass Effect, and BioShock.

It is a common misconception that Microsoft had a better year in 2007 than 2006 in terms of retailer sales. Microsoft stuffed the retail channel in late 2006 in order to meet their fiscal sales figures, resulting in no further retailer sales until mid-summer of ’07. In terms of consoles shipped, Microsoft’s best year was in 2006. It’s an amazing feat that Sony, in its worst year that the PS3 will see within its lifetime, managed to outsell the competition in its best year (’06), as well as the year that showed the most promise with titles such as Halo 3 (’07). Microsoft is destined for third place and Sony will have no trouble outselling them by a large margin in 2008.
This is a sign that the tide is drastically turning in Sony’s favor and ’08 looks to be even more promising. With killer software such as Killzone 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo 5, Resistance 2, MotorStorm 2, Little Big Planet, Grand Theft Auto 4, and Devil May Cry 4, Sony is looking poised to recapture the videogame industry. With Blu-Ray’s victorious defeat over HD-DVD, the popularity of high-definition media will only increase, leading the way for billions in profit for Sony over the next decade.

1. Pc online play has been going on for well over a decade. The Xbox showed that online console multiplayer was able to been done and succeded. The method for it is questionable (I’m not in too many laggy games, but it happens).
2. Who then is Nintendo competing with? Tiger Electronics? The last time I checked there a Console/videogame developer, and so that means that MS and Sony is there competition idiot.
3. If you are taking the playstation brand in whole of course they trump everyone. That’s like saying, “GM outsells Ferrari every year”. Also then again the PS3 was or is between $400-600 dollars, PS2 $129, and PSP $179. So of course with three units on the market it would take less time to make a profit.

Also if a developer wants to charge for online play they can. So if Infinity Ward wanted to charge for COD4 online they could and Sony would ok it. Also (besides the XBL outage over the holidays) I never really had a problem with the service. I think you just look at the price of XBL but not what it does in whole; Matchmaking, leaderboards, friends list, cross game voice/invites, IM, and sure over things I looked over.

The main reason sales for PS3 are up is because of the market share of BluRay. When a significantly cheaper player comes out, you will see a decline in this trend. Any sane gamer knows that the PS3 game library is a joke. The upcoming PS3 exclusives are irrelevant.
Some would say exclusives like Final Fantasy will breathe new life into the stale library. My rebuttle to them includes Mass Effect 2 and Fallout 3. I personally will go where Bethesda and Bioware go. Squaresoft-Enix have enough recent abortions to defeat any faith I have in their future platformers.
Xbox didnt show anything really new, PS2 and Dream Cast had internet too, and I remember thousands of people playing Final Fantasy XI on their PS2.

About the “HD” movies on xbox… a TRUE HD movie has to be 1080p full HD, read carefully, FULL HD, Microsoft is lieing people with their fake 720p and1080p. For example, I can get a Youtube Video and make it 1080p, its fucking EASY, but the quality will be THE SAME, then, that video will be 1080p but not FULL HD, that’s an example. PS3 Blu-Ray is 1080p FULL HD, Xbox CANT get that quality because his hardware, so you will never see any FULL HD thing there, just fake ones. By the way, there isnt any Full HD game yet, even if you see 1080p, its just fake. I hope you understand this, ask any specialist, he will tell you the same, i’m well documentated.
Xbox started bad, trying to appear before PS3 without HD or Wi-Fi (What the FUCK, even Nintendo DS has Wi-Fi!). Micro$oft strategy was simple, they pretend to sell it with lower price than PS3, but xbox is incomplete, so their users think that xbox is cheaper and “better” and buy it before PS3, but their surprise comes after, because they need to buy the HD-DVD “from microsoft”, and Wi-Fi router “from microsoft” or even a microphone “from microsoft”.
PS3 doesnt need Sony gear, you can put a Philips microphone if you like, you dont need to buy Sony’s version one, like microsoft does, selling expensive ones. I didn’t buy the HD-DVD add-on, wi-fi router, or even the headset. All that stuff is optional but not necessary. I agree they should build in the Wi-Fi, but even 3 years ago no one expected wi-fi to get as big as it is.
Also Sony didn’t really get into the online thing untill AFTER the original xbox was released. The PS2 didn’t have full internet (unlike the DreamCast) and didn’t sony also make people buy the internet adapter and the hard drive? I seem to remember that and it was yes of course they wanted people to buy it. Also wasn’t the hard drive only good for ONE game and that was FFXI? So don’t say the MS in scamming ppl since when sony actually started it and still are with actually taking physical features out of there sku’s. The 360 isn’t perfect but at least you can always buy the extra crap later.
Anyways, we’re talking about next gens consoles, not about PS2.
I mentioned PS2 because PS2 had internet, like Dream Cast (Game Cube also), also, Pc games had Online mode, so, Xbox360 didnt start anything, he just followed what was already created, but paying for it.
Microsoft was planning to make games with HD-DVD, that’s why you “need” it (I feel sorry for the ppl thay bought the HD-DVD player). The difference between both consoles is that, for xbox you need exclusive harddrives paying a expensive price for it, not like PS3, because on PS3 you can put in other company’s harddrives (microphone, keyboard, memmory cards, mouse etc…). That’s why Microsoft scams people, because the ONLY way to get any optional thing, is buying their expensive stuff (also, low quality ones).
PS3 is already complete, with better hardware, so you spend less money for a better system.

I’ve downloaded lots of HD content on XBL at 720 and it looks amazing. I know its hard to admit that Blue Ray is going to lose to digital downloads, but wake up and smell the future. Both HD-DVD and Blue Ray are destined to fail, and Microsoft knew it. Thats why they have supported digital downloads (in HD) and thats why all the major studios are on board. Claiming that 720 isnt HD is just lame. Just because you add the word “Full” in front of 1080, doesnt mean that you can even tell the difference between the two… Only Sony uses the word “Full” HD, and thats just because they are trying to lie to the consumers as usual, and make them think Sony has something no one else has. The avergae consumer may buy into the BS, but anyone with alittle research skills knows that Sony is known to fabricate stories all the time to make themselves look better. Where are theose 4D graphics they promised? Or those fake CGI trailers they try to pass off as in game footage that never ends up looknig that good (MotorStorm, Kill Zone). Hell, they even do it with their movie releases. They got caught making up fake movie reviews praising their crappy movie A KNIGHTS TALE…. I do play Xbox, i dont like the PS3 but Sony is a good company, I have a Sony Phone, and a Sony Bravia HDTV, both are brilliant pieces of kit. I chose the 360 because it seemed the obvious choice. C’mon Sony is a very good company, just because one of thier products doensnt do as well as its competition doenst mean “Sony are liars” “Sony are evil” Etc. I do think the 360 will win though. Spec-wise the 360 and the PS3 are practically identical. They both have slightly higher specs in different areas. The PS3 can generate slightly shinier graphics than the 360, The 360 can allow more advanced and complicated AI and more enemies on the screen at one time. Both processors are about the same, powerwise, They just work in very different ways. The 360 just seemed right for me. All the stuff i needed came out the box free. Headset, controllers Etc. the only thing i had to buy was the wireless adapter, because it was easier to use it than to drill holes in the walls, because the 360 comes with a free ethernet cable. It has better games in my opinion, sure the PS3 has some decent exclusives but most of them are jumping to the 360. seems like a waste of money when most of the PS3′s decent games are on 360. Im not a fanboy, if the PS4 seems a better option than the 3rd generation Xbox ill jump ship without thinking twice

yes, the xbox was not the first to have online but it was the first to really implement it. comparing the ps2 or gamecube online to the xbox is just idiotic. i’d rather pay for xbox live, which probablby 90% of games are compatible with than get psn’s crappy online, that has about 10% of games online. and the premium 360 comes with a hard drive and a microphone and its only $350. the cheapest ps3 is $400 and you still have to buy a $50 bluetooth headset and it has no backwards compatibility so add another $130 for a ps2.

You really need to get your shit straight.
1. PS2 and Gamecube didn’t have internet access. Sure you could play games online, but you couldn’t goto websites. The Dreamcast could access these websites and let you play online.
2. No crap the PC could play games online. It’s been able to be done for over 15 years. Hell I remember playing DOOM online and it blew my mind back then.
3. Also there where online PC gaming services that did make you pay to play (I can’t think of the name, but it’s gamespy or game something).
4. NO THE XBOX DIDN’T CREATE ONLINE GAMING. WHAT IT DID DO THOUGH, IT SHOWED THAT IT CAN BE DONE, ORGANIZED, AND IT COULD WORK ON CONSOLES AND NOT JUST PC’S. THAT SET A STANDARD FOR BOTH SONY AND NINTENDO TO WORK FOR.

If microsoft intended to make games on HD-DVD it would have had an hd-dvd drive built in. It would have had the added benefit of increasing the number of hd-dvd players by about 17 million. Xbox did alots of things for online gaming. Like cool GUI, demos, arcades,etc . Did Sony had any cool feature like xbox live on PS2 and PS3 … no. So couple year later Sony want to do the same thing and create PSN, thanks to Live.
If there weren’t original Xbox out, PS3 wouldn’t the way it was now because nothing would be competitive. Thanks Microsoft for making Xbox so PS3 would be a good system.
Just like Nvidia and Ati does about video cards.

Xbox 360 apparently had the best lineup of games in history according to Peter Moore, and the PS3 had one of the worst, yet the PS3 outsells it.
Can’t wait to see next year roll around when PS3 has the best lineup of games ever and 360 is left with crappy titles like Too Human. It’s going to be a slaughterhouse!
720p and 1080p are hard to tell apart on a high def TV because of their massive size.
they THINK it looks different because it makes a hell of a lot of difference on PC monitors.

NPD numbers are not equal to worldwide sales. NPD only tracks North America.

and doesn’t it make sense that sce has high profits? they make money off the ps2 and psp, they don’t make anything off the ps3, they lose money on it. microsofts gaming division on the other hand only has the 360 to profit off of.

The only reason Sony is matching Microsofts hardware sales is because Sony is more popular in Europe and Japan. In the US, the xbox kills the PS3 because American consumers are not afraid to buy an American product. Much like our American cars, US companies dont sell well overseas. Japan is a lost cause, but if Microsoft can concentrate on winning in Europe, than they can secure their 2nd place lead…..
Either way, its a giant win for Nintendo and Microsoft because Sony’s domination of the console market was near 70% with the PS2. With the PS3, they will be lucky to see 25%. Thats a huge drop! Whereas Microsofts and Nintendos % have gone way up since their last generation hardware #’s.
Lets not forget that these consoles are primarily about gaming, and the only console with the 7 game attachment rate as well as the highest average review score is the XBOX 360.(Out of the top 5 console games of the year, 3 were only available on the 360…. Halo 3, Bioshock and Mass Effect (Really I should throw The Orange Box on this list as well since the EA Port was barely playable on the PS3.) The PS3 and the Wii dont even come close to the caliber or quality of games the 360 has… It’s not about graphics, its about gameplay. The Wii proved that and the 360 has perfected it.
