January NPD: Playstation 3 Slaughters Xbox 360 at Retail, 360 Rotting on Store Shelves
Sony has started 2008 with a bang. Not only did Sony decide the format wars this past month by wooing Warner to the superior Blu-Ray format for exclusive support, but they’ve also recently announced that the Playstation 3 outsold the Xbox 360 in the third quarter globally.
Now, it’s America’s turn to change the tides: Playstation 3 outsells the Xbox 360 in North America and nearly edges out the Wii. Here are the official January NPD figures, ranked from first to last:
1. Nintendo Wii: 274,000
2. Playstation 3: 269,000
3. Playstation 2: 265,000
4. Nintendo DS: 251,000
5. PlayStation Portable: 230,000
6. Xbox 360: 230,000
These numbers are startling on various fronts, chief among them is the price of the PS3 relative to the competition. The best selling PS3 SKU, the 80 GB, is still priced at an expensive $499, yet it managed to candidly outsell the Xbox 360 which has numerous hardware SKUs with a lower pricing of $279. In terms of revenue, there is no doubt: The Playstation 3 generated the most revenue for January.
The numbers for the Xbox 360 are utterly disastrous. The Xbox 360 in its third January has not gained any momentum on the previous years since being released, despite the price cuts and the launch of Halo 3, and this is showing in the retail sector as pyramids of unsold Xbox 360 units are gathering dust on store shelves.
“We did not forecast the level of demand that we would see throughout the holidays, and we didn’t manufacture as many units as we should have,” Dennis said. “It’s simply a case of demand outpacing supply demand at this point. We’re working as hard as we can to replenish supply with all of our retailers, but we are aware of supply issues across the board at most major retailers in the U.S.”

Funny that I haven’t seen a 360 on shelfs for well over a month now (especially the pro and elite sku’s). Just remember that last month was January and alot of kids might had Christmas money to spend has well so go figure.

PS3 had the best “software sales / userbase” for January NPD as well.
They’re definitely using both. Unlike most Xbox fans, Sony fans have a high level of taste and branch out to both movies AND games.
Could have something to do with Microsoft not being able to keep up with demand after the holidays seeing as how there aren’t any 360′s in any stores right now.

Don’t tell me I don’t have any taste in games or movies either idiot. It just so happens that System Shock 2 is still a phenominal game and Civ 2 still has some of the best multiplayer in my opinion (both PC Games moron.) As for movies Casablanca is a definite classic, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly (best western EVER) amd don’t forget The Godfather 1 and 2.

As a PC user i don’t take sides on this childish console war, but I’m just wondering why they still make ps2′s? I pretty sure as soon as the 360 came out they completely stopped the production of the normal xboxs. Also the whole family thing is a load of crap, of course xbox is going to lose that as they only have one console on the market with the playstation having at least 3 and nintendo have 2 or 3 (im not sure they bother with the gamecube anymore). Also i think the only fair graph around here would be if the ranked all the console sales on the months after they released each console, you might see something different this way im not sure, but other people make good points saying that the 360 sales have dropped because it came out later than the ps3 and that will end up being the case with the ps3 too.
On another note i have a wii and a 360 and im happy with the 360 as it has a shit load of good games unlike the wii or ps3, i probably will end up getting a ps3, but not untill they release some decent games.

The reason FFXI wasn’t popular on 360 was that Squenix charged an additional fee, kept releasing X-Packs that fixed nothing, and kept working on a 4- year-old game. The servers were run by Squenix, it’s not Microsoft’s fault that the servers lagged (if they did). FFXI also came out for PS2, and the 360 has way more power than a PS2.

Microsoft has a warranty program (3 yrs) for all 360s that have not been modded. It only applies to the RRoD, but only 16% of 360s get that.

where’d the rest of my comment go? Basically I went on about how the 360 failure rate is shit while the Wii’s and PS3′s is much better. Then I went on about how you guys are ignoring how the ps3 just outsold the 360 in its only stronghold in the world. considering how poorly the 360 is doing in the rest of the world, the ps3 eventually beating the 360 is inevitable.
Shortage or no shortage, the 360 has the hardware sold enough to keep it close to the lead. It’s time to quit thinking about hardware, and start talking software.
The 360 are still ruling the Top Ten Best-Seller list with the Wii in close second. PS3 didn’t have any in the top ten.
There were a couple in the top 20, though. GH3, and Rock Band. Major multi-platform. Nothing exclusive, poor Naughty Dog.
How is the PS3 slaughtering the XB360, it only sold around 30,000 more units, that 150,000 unit lead the XB360 was holding over the PS3 for the majority of last year, now that was slaughtering.

Im way late on this but you missed my point.
Lets just say a guy buys a ps3 to play blu-ray movies and has no intention of buying or playing video games. Should the sale of that console count as a video game console? I dont think so, I think it should be counted as a blu-ray player. I think that if you are comparing 360 to ps3 sales you should try and take that into account. I would like to offer the disparity in attach rates(which I am fairly sure dont include HD movies) as proof.
Just because the numbers are up, doesn’t mean it is any less crap then it was then it started with. PS3 is still being beat by the Wii, and untill the PS3 can produce good games that will stay PS3 exclusive I dobut they will over take Wii any time soon. Also, it doesn’t matter how well the 360 does cause if Bill Gates really wanted he could buy Sony…
The xbox 360 shortage in January is TRUE, and it’s partially true for February, but I don’t know for March.
For a console to sell from crap to outselling the 360, you don’t need an engineering degree to know that Warner killing HD DVD made blue-ray the sole next generation video format alive and hence, the boost in PS3 purchases is absolutely normal, since it’s the best blu-ray player out there (the same can not be said if it’s compared as a console)
