Toshiba Announces Discontinuation of HD DVD Businesses
19 February, 2008
Company Remains Focused on Championing Consumer Access to High Definition Content
TOKYO–Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market. Toshiba will continue, however, to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.
HD DVD was developed to offer consumers access at an affordable price to high-quality, high definition content and prepare them for the digital convergence of tomorrow where the fusion of consumer electronics and IT will continue to progress.
“We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called ‘next-generation format war’ and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop,” said Atsutoshi Nishida, President and CEO of Toshiba Corporation. “While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality.”
Toshiba will continue to lead innovation, in a wide range of technologies that will drive mass market access to high definition content. These include high capacity NAND flash memory, small form factor hard disk drives, next generation CPUs, visual processing, and wireless and encryption technologies. The company expects to make forthcoming announcements around strategic progress in these convergence technologies.
Toshiba will begin to reduce shipments of HD DVD players and recorders to retail channels, aiming for cessation of these businesses by the end of March 2008. Toshiba also plans to end volume production of HD DVD disk drives for such applications as PCs and games in the same timeframe, yet will continue to make efforts to meet customer requirements. The company will continue to assess the position of notebook PCs with integrated HD DVD drives within the overall PC business relative to future market demand.
This decision will not impact on Toshiba’s commitment to standard DVD, and the company will continue to market conventional DVD players and recorders. Toshiba intends to continue to contribute to the development of the DVD industry, as a member of the DVD Forum, an international organization with some 200 member companies, committed to the discussion and defining of optimum optical disc formats for the consumer and the related industries.
Toshiba also intends to maintain collaborative relations with the companies who joined with Toshiba in working to build up the HD DVD market, including Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and DreamWorks Animation and major Japanese and European content providers on the entertainment side, as well as leaders in the IT industry, including Microsoft, Intel, and HP. Toshiba will study possible collaboration with these companies for future business opportunities, utilizing the many assets generated through the development of HD DVD.

LMFAO i’m sending this to everyone i know!
That’s quite the funny pic but the pic is wrong to a degree though.
1. HD-DVD is a storage format not a console.
2. The picture should just show the HD-DVD attachment in the trash not the 360. Hans you idiot the 360 has a DVD drive built in not a HD-DVD drive (you should know since you spent over eight grand on a 360 and hd-dvd player and over 250 movies and traded all of them in for less than half of what you paid)
3. Blu-ray association look it up.
4. It’s still a funny fucking pic though.
Just to point out, although it will possibly be ignored because this site doesn’t seem to like facts, but Toshiba is the originator of HD-DVD, not Microsoft. Microsoft just released an HD-DVD player. Doesn’t mean much.
Good for Blu-Ray and Sony, though. I have a PS3, and one day I’ll be getting a HDTV and will be buying Blu-Rays, surely.
jeez fan boys are retards
let me give you a lesson
this is a blu ray player http://www.blu-ray.com/images/players/bd-p1200_right.jpg
this is a hd dvd player http://www.hdtvexpert.com/images_b/hd2a_1.jpg
this is a 360 yes we know it has a hd add on but that dosent matter because its a FREAKNG VIDEO GAME CONSOLE
http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/images/press/2005/05-13Xbox_360.jpg
this is a ps3 yes it has a blu ray player but its not the exclusive place to play blu ray movies
http://files.playstatic.com/playstation-3-hardware/playstation-3.jpg
im tired of this gay shit i own a ps3 and 360 and they ARE BOTH GREAT SYSTEMS. im tired of this oooh the format war is gonna decide the console war … or 360 loses because hd dvd loses.
even though i own a ps3 also i dont give a shit about blu ray because i dont have a HD TV . till HD becomes more common i will stick with normal dvds. when HD is common i will go blu and blu ray players will be cheap enough by then that the ps3 having them wont matter
sorry just had to vent im getting annoyed of stupid fan boys which boy even though i love the 360 and ps3 there are alot of them on both systems
funniest part about this pic is that it features ken kutaragi, who has nothing to do with sony anymore…
oh, and coldyellow, I’m officially ditching my RPG time from mass effect to lost odyssey.
lol…really funny pic SDF, we knew this was bound to happen. anyway, y’d u choose 11th of nov 06?
Looks like 360 will never have games with HD-DVD, cool.
Congratulations for the Xboxers who bought the HD-DVD reader, you first failed at buying 360, and then you failed twice buying the HD-DVD reader, but, we know, xboxers are low-mind people.
PS3 +1, again.
Fucking Win, see you in the next topic, you cant answer my post, xboxer, because my post is perfect, and you have been OWNED, not from me, but from Microsoft incapacity.
@ nextgenuser
You love your four to six letter word starting with an F, and I dare say you have no idea what it actually means. And I also suspect you’re either still in school or not mentally capable enough to under stand that if people reply to some drivel you post they don’t lose.
On the article, I think Blu-Ray has to start outselling DVD before it can be classed as it’s successor.
I knew SDF was stupid, but I didn’t realize they were so stupid they think it’s still 2006
Hey guys, I gave in. That’s right. I kept on hearing great reviews about Drake’s Fortune, that I just gave in and bought a PS3. I haven’t gotten Drake’s Fortune yet, but the PS3 makes me feel kind of uncomforDERP DERP DERP DERP XBOXERS SUCK LOLCOX DERP!
You fucking idiot, losing Hd Dvd will barley affect 360, MS even said it’s possible for 360 to have a blu ray player made.
No one gives a shit about losing HD Dvd. it was a matter of time, not like it makes us loose our SUPERIOR games and FANTASTIC exclusives.
And NXGUser, failed at buying a 360? fanboy much?
stupid nerd.
What does this have to do with, you know, games?
PS3 is still an overpriced system that no one wants.
“PS3 is still an overpriced system that no one wants.”
So what does that make the 360 when it’s $350 with a 20 GB hard drive, without a blu-ray drive, and with inferior hardware under the hood — especially now that the PS3 is outselling it in the US, Europe, and Japan?
LOL! Gates had nothing to do with HD-DVD.
Toshiba made it.
Nexgenchink, just shut the fuck up.
The first mistake you made was not dying in the womb!
Oh and Hans, Wii is “Inferior” and KILLING you beloved PS3fuckboxasslickershithumper-ray player
nextgenuser your a douche ps3 and 360 both rock and the 360 and ps3 wont die
so screw hd dvd and blu ray …. blu ray won but know what i never cared about hd dvd or blu ray when getting my ps3
“So what does that make the 360 when it’s $350 with a 20 GB hard drive, without a blu-ray drive, and with inferior hardware under the hood — especially now that the PS3 is outselling it in the US, Europe, and Japan?”
The Wii has neither a hard drive nor a blu-ray or even an HD-DVD drive and its kicking everyone’s ass. Food for thought.
And as far as the PS3 outselling it, yeah it seems the PS3 can compete when the 360 is suffering shortages. Yay?
“The Wii has neither a hard drive nor a blu-ray or even an HD-DVD drive and its kicking everyone’s ass.”
I guess that depends on your perspective. That little toy has sold more units that the real game machines, true…but since its got a hamster wheel for a processor it never gets ports of real games (UT3 comes to mind). Wii Sports is fun though!
Anyways, I am so glad HD DVD is finally dead. Thanks to the PS3, I have been enjoying Blu for some time now; but it’s great to know that those formally exclusive HD DVD releases will be coming to Blu Ray! I do feel sorry for the 360 kids who bought the add on HD DVD drive though. Mind you it was very smart of Microsoft not to include that unit in the system itself, but I hear Gamestop won’t even be buying those back from customers who bought them anymore. Ouch.
The Wii is significantly less expensive than the PS3. Once the PS3 comes down to mainstream prices, it will obliterate the Wii, and the Xbox 360 will be long forgotten.
Also, Blu-Ray will account for more profit for Sony than the Wii could ever dream of.
Wii is “casual”, you cant compare it with the next-gen consoles.
360 doesnt have the power to load a B-Ray, remember that 360 cant load 1080p FULL HD, only 720p and “simulated” 1080p.
The only advantage that 360 has, is the money, that’s why 260 will go down like the other xbox.
PS3 is superior on all ways, the problem is that 360 keeps paying to the companys to make low-quality games for 360, and obviously, companys are all about money, so they dont care.
Anyways, looking how MS is failing, PS3 will oppen the cpmpany’s eyes, and they will make high-quality games, screwing the creepy 360.
Btw, I dont have 360 because I dont need to spend my money on a dead console.
Win.
Wow Hans (and your bitch nextgenuser, who won this year’s Golden Knee Pad Award), you guys are morons, you indeed should have died in the womb! So, PS3 beats 360 sales. About time, especially since 360s are in short supply!! I guess that’s the only way $ony can win, if 360s aren’t in stock! You guys should be the poster children for condom adverts!!!
Hans, hey Kraut! You forget one thing, the Wii could be sold for as little as a HUNDRED dollars, and Nintendo would still profit from it!
@ Hans
The Gamecube was incredibly cheap, and it still didn’t win. Not even close. And yes, the 360 is suffering from massive shortages. Why do so few mention this?
That’s because the GameCube wasn’t desirable.
PS3 is outselling the GameCube at $599 vs. $149 for the GameCube.
Impressive.
Also, the PS3 is also suffering from shortages. The 80 GB SKU is sold out for most retailers. The “shortages” excuse goes both ways.
@Hans
The 80 GB is being phased out. Also it’s easy to say the PS3 is outselling the Gamecube to a couple of facts: Who the fuck wants a gamecube since the Wii is out and also it’s hard to find a GC since noone is carrying them anymore (unless it’s unsold stock). Another thing is why can’t you Sony PS3 fanboy(s) get it through your head that the 360 and PS3 are comparable to one each other. Need proof? listen to the Criterion Podcast 15 or 16 that’s coming from the dev’s of the Burnout series and not me.
One more thing: when will you get it through your fucking skull that a storage format doesn’t mean that the games are automatically better? Laserdisk was technically better for games but that didn’t mean Dragons Lair was better than SMB.
Though Dragon’s Lair was the shit though back in the day.
“I guess that depends on your perspective. That little toy has sold more units that the real game machines, true…but since its got a hamster wheel for a processor it never gets ports of real games (UT3 comes to mind).”
It is really precious when people call the Wii a “toy”. Does calling your system a “hardcore gamer system” do something for your sensitive ego?
You know what matters when it comes to games? Fun. Thats it. Blu-Ray, processors, in the end none of that shit matters.
And as far as Blu-Ray AND HD-DVD, eh screw them both. Lets see, how many people do I know with a HD television? Oh yeah. Zero. Its pretty much a nonfactor to a large number of people.
Just something picky, has anyone else noticed the date on the picture? Were in 2008, not 2006 Douche!
And I got a question for you Sony loving fuckwits, who want Sony to dominate, and destroy everything else.
What happens when you beloved Supachinks rule the industry? Hmm?
@erik
“You know what matters when it comes to games? Fun. Thats it. Blu-Ray, processors, in the end none of that shit matters.”
Cheers for that remark. I agree with ya on the whole thing of ppl calling the wii a “toy”. Never once that ever crossed my mind of it being a toy. Sure it can’t technically can’t match that of the 360 or PS3 but it doesn’t make it any less of a console.
“Also, the PS3 is also suffering from shortages. The 80 GB SKU is sold out for most retailers. The “shortages†excuse goes both ways.”
At all the GameStops/FYEs/etc I’ve been at in the past few months, they have stacks of PS3 Rock Band bundles but the 360 bundles disappear within days (it took me weeks of trying to get mine). It says something if PS3 owners, who spend the most on their systems, can’t be arsed to spend an extra $169 on a game.
You do realize this could probably mean more good news for 360 owners, and it’s the PS3 that may be smelling like the grave.
Microsoft has recently annouced that they have CONCIDERED switching to Blu-Ray. More than likely, that means both Microsoft and Nintendo may include the drive in the next cycle.
Hey Sony, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Since you won the battle on the format front, why waste money on losing in the game front?
Blu-Ray’s success means that Sony will probably quit wasting money on their dying console and stick to making Blu-ray drives for the other systems. Better luck next time, SDF!
P.S. Since it’s the games that matter, and 90% of the buyers are picking up the PS3 for the Blu-Ray, it means more money than ever is being lost on the console.
The only reason these guys focus so much on all that blu ray nonsense because the ps3 has shit games, and in the end thats what matters.
@coldyellow
I would just like to say your the shit man, just the shit.
@Hans
Nor is the PS3, albiet selling more than the cube. Thanks to the massive (and now spurned and dissapointed) PS2 install base.
And if it’s really being sold out at most retailers, what good would a price drop do?
omg he’s right o my god this guy needs to cut his dick off for not spotting this does this now show that the guy who runs this sight is a fuckin retard good spot wi-five sladey
it was outright idiotic for sony to include blu ray in the ps3 as a necessity.
games re doing completely fine on DVD, and I doubt that with the ps3′s hardware, it will be needed for any games. it’s got 10 years to go, yeah, but again, the hardware doesn’t flatter it that much.
PC gaming will eventually use it, probably within 10 years, but that’s because it has the hardware to run games that need it.
the NEXT gen of consoles will probably need blu ray, but not this gen, no fucking way.
it was outright idiotic for ynos (backwards) to include blu ray in the ps3 as a necessity.

damn, can’t figure out how to dodge the moderation this time…
“This decision will not impact on Toshiba’s commitment to standard DVD, and the company will continue to market conventional DVD players and recorders.”
exactly…
If I really wanted a Blu-Ray player, and I might not, considering how much digital downloads are making such inroads, I would buy a PS3 if it was the cheapest option. I might even buy some games for it if they were PS3 exclusives. I believe my PS3 and 360 could co-exist peacefully under my TV.
Oh, this from my aunt, who’s programmed computers for 30-odd years: “Multi-core systems are harder to program for since you need simultaneous processing to occur. If you had less cores or just one, it’s a lot easier to program for with little loss of program quality.”
Just throwing that out there.
Did anyone else notice the only month that the PS3 outsold the 360 is the same month that blu-ray finally won, AND both the Wii and 360 are having shortages? Its not too spectacular. Also, this doesnt affect 360 owners unless they bought that addon. (I dont think I know anybody who actually did)
hey guys that picture is mostly a true representation !!
YES the PS3 is a really really really big console
note,, is ken (katuragi?) now working as a garbage man ???
Hmm, my last comment doesn’t want to be moderated…

Actually, the PS3 owes it’s life to Blu-Ray, otherwise it WOULD be dead by now. The games just don’t sell.
In all seriousness, it’s sad to see how little the consumer influenced this battle’s outcome. Toshiba said last Christmas was their best selling season ever. The consumers had made a choice: HD-DVD
Then WB comes in and says “No, we say Blu-Ray. We’re going to produce it, you’re going to buy it, and you’re going to like it. Because We say so.”
Sony’s never given a crap about their customers either. That’s why I don’t want a PS3 right now. Every PS3 owner I’ve met has said, “I’ve got a PS3, and I love it.” That’s all fine and good. But I don’t trust Sony. They just ain’t got your back.
Other than that, it’s just the price of the system, and nothing exclusive right now that I’m interested in. Aside from Uncharted, all the games I’d pick up are also on the 360 (and running better, I hear).
@ xeacons
If I really wanted to watch Blu-ray movies, which I have no desire to do right now, I’d get a 360 add-on. I might get a PS3 if I both wanted to watch Blu-Ray movies AND if I wanted one of their games.
@nextgenuser
“Looks like 360 will never have games with HD-DVD, cool.”
We don’t need games with HD-DVD, multiplatform games e.g. GTAIV seem to run just fine on 360(notice how they haven’t shown the PS3 version?), what with the extra RAM and faster DVD speed vs. Blu-ray speed. I’m not saying that Blu-ray is useless for games, I just think it needs more time to be utilized.
“Congratulations for the Xboxers who bought the HD-DVD reader, you first failed at buying 360, and then you failed twice buying the HD-DVD reader, but, we know, xboxers are low-mind people.”
If we bought the HD-DVD drive, it was because it was the cheapest HD-DVD player available and there were some movies we absolutely wanted to watch. I don’t have the HD-DVD addon (I wanted to see what format would win, and I really didn’t give a shit now that iTunes does movies), but I don’t think that everyone who bought one is an idiot.
“PS3 +1, again.”
You fail.
“Fucking Win, see you in the next topic, you cant answer my post, xboxer, because my post is perfect, and you have been OWNED, not from me, but from Microsoft incapacity.”
Microsoft wasn’t involved in pushing HD-DVD, they had Windows support for Blu-ray drives from the start. Your post isn’t perfect, because your grammar blows. You didn’t win, because you proved nothing. You provided no facts to back up your point.
I know this post will not pass moderation, but I don’t care. I just wanted to rebuke nextgenuser’s lack of sense.
You dont need games on HD-DVD because the 360 hardware cant load HD games anyways.
GTAIV is multiplatform, that’s why it will not be a next-gen game.
Microsoft is making Game Programmers vague, those programmers doesnt invest on the new technologies, and they keep programming for 360, so we get suxy games, and a even worse multiplatforms… Microsoft is stopping the Gamming world, just to make some money (they’re failing at this anyways).
So, you bought a HD-DVD drive to play 1 or 3 movies (since HD-DVD is dead, there wont be any more movies)… this is just fucking awesome, I cant answer this, you have responded yourself.
I provided that Microsoft is just stopping the Gaming world to do the same with Windows. They try to kill Linux, Apple etc… just to be the “only operative system”, now they’re trying to kill Nintendo and Sony, that’s how Microsoft works, and you support them, congratulations.
You get under moderation only when you post more than 2 or 3 times on the same topic, I think, because sometimes it happens to me.
@nextgenuser
“You dont need games on HD-DVD because the 360 hardware cant load HD games anyways.
GTAIV is multiplatform, that’s why it will not be a next-gen game.”
The difference in graphics on 360 and PS3 is indistinguishable. You’re right that GTAIV won’t be a next-gen game – it’s coming out on the current gen, not the PS4/Xbox 720/Wii2 generation. The lead console for GTAIV is the 360. That’s not to say that the PS3 is inferior, it’s just to say that they will both be equal in graphics/features. GTAIV is pretty HD to me – look at it next to GTAIII.
“Microsoft is making Game Programmers vague, those programmers doesnt invest on the new technologies, and they keep programming for 360, so we get suxy games, and a even worse multiplatforms… Microsoft is stopping the Gamming world, just to make some money (they’re failing at this anyways).”

You could say that MS is stopping the gaming world, but multiplatform games like CoD4 (say CoD4 sucks and you fail – it looks the EXACT SAME on PS3 and 360) come out on schedule – you can’t say that either the 360 or PS3 delayed CoD4 since IW had planned for it to come out in Nov. I actually like to see that programmers are coming out with some nice stuff for the PS3, the system is full of untapped potential. Even if the only software it could run was Folding@Home, it would still be a great system. I might get one to run as a CS:S game server – great processor in that thing.
“So, you bought a HD-DVD drive to play 1 or 3 movies (since HD-DVD is dead, there wont be any more movies)… this is just fucking awesome, I cant answer this, you have responded yourself.”
I didn’t buy an HD-DVD player – I was just saying why I thought ~600K people bought one. Toshiba never said that they’ll cease production of HD-DVDs – I don’t see it being used as a storage medium like Sony’s (failed) Betamax format – even 8 years after its ‘death’.
“I provided that Microsoft is just stopping the Gaming world to do the same with Windows. They try to kill Linux, Apple etc… just to be the “only operative systemâ€, now they’re trying to kill Nintendo and Sony, that’s how Microsoft works, and you support them, congratulations.”
I’ve said that MS is not stopping the gaming world, so I won’t respond to that. They haven’t been trying to kill Linux/Mac OS X, although I believe they are superior to Windows. They’re not trying to kill Nintendo and Sony – if they did, they’d have another HUGE antitrust suit on their hands. Do you own a Sony laptop/desktop/UMPC? They all run Windows. It’s called comperation (competition + cooperation). If MS killed Sony, they’d lose a channel for their Windows software to be sold.
“You get under moderation only when you post more than 2 or 3 times on the same topic, I think, because sometimes it happens to me.”
Thanks, I was wondering how that worked.
You guys are hilarious and acting like HD-DVD is Microsoft. Think again guys, Microsoft just simply supporting HD-DVD just for marketing. Just like Sony used to support BetaMax. When HD-DVD lost, Microsoft won’t be hurting like BetaMax to Sony.
I am sure that Microsoft would make blu-ray players for Xbox 360 like they did on HD-Dvd.
@nextgenuser
Sony is no better than Microsoft. You seems to only focus to negatively on Microsoft, have you focus negatively on Sony too? I doubt it because you’re ignorants and low minded too. But really I don’t care about which company are better, I’ll happly own both system soon.
For the rest of you, go own both system and quit your bitchy like 12 years old.
As for SDF, get a life.
Hark, I wish you could see my comment that is awaiting moderation
Time and time again history has showed us that raw console power and high end graphics have nothing to do with the success of a console. Ultimately it is the games and nothing else. I love my 360, but thats only because I have Assassins Creed, Gears of War, Crackdown, Rainbow Six Vegas, ect., ect. I’m man enough to say that I would hate it if it didn’t have anything fun to play. Graphics are good, an so is all this HD junk. But what would you rather do, watch Fast and the Furious: Tokey Drift in HD, or play Super Mario Bros. 3 on the NES?
i know damn microsoft for making the household computer a neccesstiy and opening up so many jobs yep there the devil
In other news, Gears of War 2 is announced today as exclusive to the 360.
nextgenchink is so awesome, I want to have it’s babies!
It’s chink babies!

by the way, it makes both sides of this petty conflict sound ignorant when they call someone stupid names instead of backing up their claims with, you know, facts.
@Nextgenuser
Tell me what these games have in common:
Halo3, Resistance, Doom, Wolfenstein 3d, amd Call of Duty 4?
Also these games: Ratchet and Clank, Super Mario Bros, and Sonic the Hedgehog.
And don’t forget the following: Phantasy Star 2, Final Fantasy 13, Lunar: the silver star story, Might and Magic, and Fallout.
Your answer has to be straight forward and not a load of your dumb nonsensical ranting that doesn’t make a point either.
@ Nextgenuser

First off if they did kill Apple and Linux they would become a Monopoly, which you cannot have.
Also Microsoft has supported and will always support Apple. Microsoft help Apples out of a sticky situation by giving them money!
And to everyone in here. All consoles are all good. If you appreciate all consoles then you are a true gamer! Wannabe Gamers are called fanboys who just disagree with the opposite console because they’re immature and looking for a fight.
Peace!

“Sony’s never given a crap about their customers either.”
and MS does?
they’re making $500 million profit a year from charging to play games online they don’t even make…
@animekid
In all seriousness though Sony, MS, and Nintendo don’t really care about the consumers they just care about the money.
Sony= didn’t care about making the system affordable to most of it’s core consumer group (c’mon between $500-$600 for most of the year)
MS= not enough product testing (RROD).
Nintendo= not enough consoles to go around
I think the situation with HD-DVD truly is an interesting parallel to the Xbox 360:
1. HD-DVD launched earlier than Blu-Ray (Xbox 360 launched earlier than the PS3).
2. HD-DVD got off to an early lead against Blu-Ray (Xbox 360 got off to an early lead against the PS3).
3. HD-DVD tanked in Europe and Japan, but did OK in the US (Xbox 360 tanked in Europe and Japan, but did OK in the US).
4. HD-DVD started losing to Blu-Ray (Xbox 360 is starting to lose globally to the PS3 and it is in third in every region now on a month to month basis).
So my prediction is that just like HD-DVD, Xbox 360 will be a short lived failure and the Playstation 3, along with Blu-Ray, will reign supreme. Microsoft will now be looking for exit strategies (just like Toshiba).
While you are all busy with your glorified movie system the rest of us will be playing GAMES on our 360s and Wiis.
Go back to Germany Hans! Go do Nazi shit like your people do!
http://kotaku.com/359010/hd-dvd-death-doesnt-necessarily-mean-sony-win
@CY: yeah, they all do, but he acted as if sony’s the only one doing it.
MS is usually the one criticized for their money pinching ways, though.
sony’s criticized for lies… and lair…
@erik
If MGS4 and FFXIII don’t come out this year, PS3 is fuxxored.
“Hans Says:
3. HD-DVD tanked in Europe and Japan, but did OK in the US (Xbox 360 tanked in Europe and Japan, but did OK in the US).”
Hans (did I mention he won the Golden Knee Pad award from $ony), 360 did OK in the US??? How about 360 blew away the POS3 in the US! How about abysmal software sales and attach rates for the POS3?!! Your such a $ony dick licker it’s not even funny. Who cares about Flu-ray, DVD still reigns supreme and by the time there are enough people with HDTV to matter, Digital downloads (just like music downloads, follow me Hans, I know it’s hard for you) will lead the way. The only reason POS3 are bought are for movie players, because we all know 99% of the games SUCK!!!!!
You suck and Sony sucks!!!
To clarify Hans, COD4, Orange Box don’t suck, then again they were ports from 360 to POS3. I think that makes the 1% of games that don’t suck on the POS3. Although, the games do look better on the 360 than the POS3. Thank Sony for the stupid decision to go with an outdated Nvidia chip! Dumbasses!!
@animekid
Lair is this generations Superman 64.
@360UP
MGS4 will more than likely make it out this year but FFXIII I doubt it. I wouldn’t say the PS3 would be fucked if those 2 titles didn’t come out this year. There still would be RFoM2, KZ2, White Knight Story, GH4, and madden. It will be a better year for a PS3 only owner this year compared to last year though.
WOAHMG! LOOK AT BLURAYS WIN! http://kotaku.com/358979/simple-2000-the-japanese-software-chart
Why does everyone think Killzone 2 is going to be so great? What I think will be great though, is Gears 2 and maybe MGS4.
@ColdYellow
I don’t see GH4 helping PS3 much…
Guitar Hero: Aerosmith? A multiplatform release like that won’t make people buy PS3s – same for Madden. Resistance 2
Damn, there goes my comment.
Resistance 2
Dammit, SDF doesn’t like the less than symbol “
DAMMIT. My damn comment won’ show up – fucking less than symbol
Resistance 2
5th time’s the charm
Resistance 2 is inferior to GoW 2, Killzone 2 is inferior to GoW 2.
Gears has really good name recognition. I think a parent would see a game called Killzone next to a game called Gears of War and pick up the one with the less violent name.
@P-S-of-shit
I agree.
@P-S-of-shit
I agree with the KZ2. The first KZ wasn’t that great but it wasn’t bad either (sort of “meh”)
@360UP
Neither Resistance 2, KZ2, or GoW 2 is out so it’s not really fair to say one is inferior to the other without actually playing the game(s) in question (who knows they all could suck more dick than Paris Hilton).
@xbox360FTW
both GPU’s have their strengths and weaknesses and turn out to be generally the same
the Xenos (360) has more shaders while the RSX (PS3) runs everything at a higher clock speed
your a blind fanboy- deal with it
@ CY
I was just saying that GoW has a better track record – look at the metascore ratings.
GoW: 94
KZ: 70
R:FoM: 86
from (www.metacritic.com)
I just wanted to say that, that is easily the best picture Ive seen on this site, and congratz on making me laugh as usual SDF, nothing but great comedy to people who don’t take this site seriously.
sosolidsnake is an idiot.
From everything I’ve read, the X360 GPU is amazing. The CPU isn’t anything too special, but the GPU is fantastic.
As for the PS3, it has a fantastic CPU, but the GPU is severely lacking. The PS3 and the X360 balance each other out; hence why the graphics for both systems are about the same.
HNNNG Look at THAT! http://kotaku.com/359623/tales-of-vesperia-for-360-confirmed
Blu-ray is winning so HARD! I just wanna fuck something in the FACE!
If they keep making blank HD-DVD discs and burners, Blu-Ray’s victory is great news. HD-DVD burners and discs will get insanely cheap, and I have a LOT of crap I really should make a backup copy of.
“It is really precious when people call the Wii a “toyâ€. Does calling your system a “hardcore gamer system†do something for your sensitive ego?
You know what matters when it comes to games? Fun. Thats it. Blu-Ray, processors, in the end none of that shit matters.”
Does calling my PS3 a ‘hardcore gamer system’ do something for my ego? No sir, my ego doesn’t need boosting; but I do like my games to be state of the art – call me crazy, that’s just how I like it. As for the Wii, it sounds like it’s your ego that gets hurt when people call your little machine out for what it is – so sad, too bad. You’re right about that fun thing though, and I have a lot of fun with my PS3. CoD4 and UT3 are just awesome. Hope your enjoying…uh…Mario Universe and…whatever else you play on that system.
Guh…FAW!!!! http://kotaku.com/359811/square+enix-rechristens-white-engine-plans-to-bring-it-to-wii
“As for the Wii, it sounds like it’s your ego that gets hurt when people call your little machine out for what it is – so sad, too bad.”
Not really. Like I said, I find it amusing. Why would my ego be hurt? The Wii is devastating the PS3 on all fronts.
“You’re right about that fun thing though, and I have a lot of fun with my PS3. CoD4 and UT3 are just awesome. ”
Good for you. And I’m sure were I forced to play PS3 I could irk out a small bit of fun with it also. But for the ridiculous price of the PS3 just doesn’t justify what fun I could have with the system.
It’s really a system with people with more money than brains.

you stupid fucks are worthless, i havent checked this page for 2 months and when i do all i see is a handful of stories, all of which are the same damn thing just with a slightly different title and picture, you people used to be hilarious, now you are just pathetic
“Not really. Like I said, I find it amusing. Why would my ego be hurt? The Wii is devastating the PS3 on all fronts.”
Well, you seem to take enough offense to post about it, but if you wanna say it didn’t hurt your feeling – good for you!
“Good for you. And I’m sure were I forced to play PS3 I could irk out a small bit of fun with it also. But for the ridiculous price of the PS3 just doesn’t justify what fun I could have with the system.”
You find the price ridiculous? I thought it was a great value…maybe I’m just older than you. I hope one day you come into a good career where you can afford a system that actually gets the big name games. I just ‘forced’ myself beat DMC4 last night – it was awesome.
Sorry about getting the Mario title wrong…I don’t play the younger games anymore.
“Well, you seem to take enough offense to post about it, but if you wanna say it didn’t hurt your feeling – good for you!”
Posting? No I’m posting for the chuckles. Why would I feel offended. The Wii is dominating the “console wars” afterall.
“You find the price ridiculous? I thought it was a great value”
The most ridiculously priced system is a great value? You provide me with more chuckles.
“I hope one day you come into a good career where you can afford a system that actually gets the big name games.”
This really doesn’t have anything to do with one’s income. No matter what kind of money you make its clear that the better value for the money is the Wii, or possibly the 360. Now if I was lottery/set for life level rich I might buy a PS3 on a whim. Beyond that there is really nothing that can justify the price.
“Sorry about getting the Mario title wrong…I don’t play the younger games anymore.”
Me thinks you are not so old as you claim to be. That comment reminds me of something that a 14 year old would say. Trying to prove their maturity by only buying M rated games.
It would seem that my tastes in games are a little more broad than yours, as there is enough room in my library for both mario and darker games.
Well, in any case I am glad to provide you with the laughs. Isn’t the cheap PS3 down to around $400 bucks? That’s on par with 360 pricing, no? Is that really ‘ridiculous’ to you? With a PS3, you get a Blu Ray player too – great for HDTVs (I know, you don’t have one of those yet either…). Also, ‘you thinks’ wrong my friend – I’m 27. Maybe your tastes are broader than mine, but I just can’t seem to find the fun in Mario, Donkey Kong, or any of those guys any more…oh well. This isn’t to say I ‘only buy M rated games,’ (another incorrect assumption) merely that sometime around Gamecube, I fannly decided I’d had it with the big N’s lineup. Sometimes I do wonder about stuff like Metroid Prime though (last one I played was Super on SNES).
“Isn’t the cheap PS3 down to around $400 bucks?”
I’m not paying $400 for a gaming system, any system.
“That’s on par with 360 pricing, no?”
No. http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=909081
“With a PS3, you get a Blu Ray player too – great for HDTVs (I know, you don’t have one of those yet either…).”
Nor does anyone I know have an HDTV. So its really a moot point as far as my purchasing of a game system goes.
Did you just link a refurbished Xbox? LOL! You must like RRoDs. How about comparing a new 360 (elite of course, since that’s the only only with features that even come close to a PS3). That’s over $450, isn’t it?
Maybe you or the people you know don’t have HDTVs (almost everyone I know does – or can at least admit they want one), but for those of us that do having a Blu Ray player is a nice feature – and something like a $400 value. Maybe you should have said “provided you don’t have a HDTV or care about having a system that can play big name games, its clear that the better value for the money is the Wii.”
ok lets get the record stright about the RRoD it happens ok but its not like your gettin a new 360 every 2 months ok it happened to me once and i sent it in 2 weeks l8ter it came back and is still workin and this was in 2006 ok it doesn’t happen all the time
A new XBox Elite? No. I am not going to spend that kind of money on a gaming system, or haven’t you been paying attention? I plan on buying a 360 eventually, but I’m not going to buy one with a bunch of useless features that I don’t need.
And you keep prattling on about “Big name games”. Just what is your definition of a “big name game” praytell?
That’s fine to say you wouldn’t spend that kind of money, or that the features I enjoy are useless to you, but trying to make a comparison between a new priced PS3 and a used price 360 is silly.
When I ‘prattle on’ about big name games – I refer to big franchise sequels like Halo 3, MGS4, GTA4, Soul Calibur 4, etc. Those kinds of games wouldn’t run well on a Wii because it lacks the processing/graphics power of a PC, 360, or PS3. Nintendo does have its own big names like Mario, Zelda, etc., but were they not N exclusives, the other systems could easily run them. I guess if you don’t care about those franchises, it’s not an issue, and you do save money when you go with a Wii, but I am anxious to play my favorite game’s next gen sequels and on a Wii, I couldn’t do that.
Anyways, got to go, but I’m glad you enjoy your system (maybe systems in the future) and I enjoy mine – later!
“but trying to make a comparison between a new priced PS3 and a used price 360 is silly.”
Actually no. I did look at the used PS3′s also:
http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=909117
Still not going for it.
“blu ray the successor to dvd” it has to beat dvd first doesn’t it? microsoft doesn’t care that hd dvd lost, they had no stake in it like toshiba did. they only backed it to prolong the war until digital distribution is ready (and when it is it will destroy blu ray). microsoft said a long time ago they would release a blu ray addon if it won.
and how are you going to spin the 360′s GTA4 exclusive downloadable content? what did they say, stuff the side of san andreas? yep, and you don’t get any of it.
ha ha bitches, that one isn’t awaiting moderation. your censor is easy to beat.
http://www.n4g.com/xbox360/News-114529.aspx
gta4 exclusive content, only for 360 owners.
Erik, you are an idiot. Toastedrebel is a TROLL. He’s just saying things to piss you off. If he’s not, he’s truly a sad being, lost in his own fantasy world.
ok if you happen to be playin live and someone says GOW2 beta and sign up at gearsofwar2.tk DON’T DO IT!!!!!!!!!! my friend checked it out and said u would like it if u were gay so nextgen check it out
Technicly speaking, Blu-Ray isn’t the successor YET. While odds are it will be, it still hasn’t really been As popular as DVD yet. It’s still feasable that a new forrmat will emmerge, and mannage to kill off Blu-Ray. It’s not the successor untill DVD is DEAD. And since I’ve yet to see any real films release JUST on Blu-Ray, not on DVD as well, it’s not time yet.
I’m still saying that all formats of disc are going to be dead soon – downloadable films are the future.
I love how Toshiba doesn’t mention a move to Blu-Ray at all in their press release.
@Panda
Disc’s aren’t going anywhere. Too many industries use cd, dvd, and even 3.5 floopy disks yet to send out data yet. Games and music might ditch the disc format but the rest of industry most likely won’t for a good while (my estimate is 10+ years out)

Hi I ken kutaragi!
I poop in the back part of your toilet so when you flush, poop come out!
Ken wasn’t half bad, actually. He didn’t have anything to do with the PS3 and was smart enough to jump ship when Sony started sinking.
After Nintendo scrapped the original PS add-on contract, Ken was the ONLY one at Sony, who begged to keep the project open. Sony never really had any faith in their own system, until it took off.
All-in-all, I think the introduction of the PS was originally healthy for the industry. It got Nintendo off their high horse, made them re-think about the quality of games, gave a more mature look to games, and let other companies like MS a chance to partake.
A little change now and then is always a good thing. And sometimes, it’s healthy to fall, and learn to get back up again. That’s what nintendo went through, now it’s Sony’s turn.
actually, xeacons, look at the usual material in six1s’ posts, then at those last two, and tell me that doesn’t look a little odd. I don’t think that’s six1s posting those.
P.S. As for Blu-Ray, it’s what’s keeping the PS3 alive. PS3 is certainly selling because of it. But that’s not making Sony any money. They’re not losing as much money off of regular Blu-Ray players as the PS3.
But the games aren’t selling.
PS3′s just an oversized Blu-Ray player. And Sony knows it. Now that Blu-Ray’s won, there’s no need to keep marketing the PS3. Why fight a losing war when the battle’s won elsewhere?
Sony’s got bigger fish to fry. They won’t be bothering us much longer.
@Dahak
Hard to tell. I hope you’re right, but there’s been a lot of this stuff from “six1s” before.
@six1s
If there’s anyone who’s been posting under your name, let us know.

Can’t wait to see what SDF says about Phil Harrison leaving the company…
Sony is doing so great that their fearless leader “Fast” Philly Harrison is leaving $ony!! The rats are starting to jump ship!!! Maybe he’s moving to a Blu-ray studio, since that’s the only thing that sells on POS3!!! HAHAHAHA!! Drop dead Phony fanboys!!!
Hey SDF, where’s the Fast Philly leaving $ony article? Ah, still trying fudge something to explain it? Dumb asses!!!!
Another bites the dust!
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/02/25/breaking-phil-harrison-resigns-from-sony-computer-entertainment/
@ xbox360FTW
You call people Sony fanboys, yet you post shit like that (with a name like that)? What a hypocrite.
“Hans (did I mention he won the Golden Knee Pad award from $ony), 360 did OK in the US??? How about 360 blew away the POS3 in the US! How about abysmal software sales and attach rates for the POS3?!! Your such a $ony dick licker it’s not even funny. Who cares about Flu-ray, DVD still reigns supreme and by the time there are enough people with HDTV to matter, Digital downloads (just like music downloads, follow me Hans, I know it’s hard for you) will lead the way. The only reason POS3 are bought are for movie players, because we all know 99% of the games SUCK!!!!!
You suck and Sony sucks!!!”
IF you haven’t been paying attention, the PS3 just outsold the 360 in January (in the US). Lets be honest with ourselves here; The 360 has little or no support coming in from the rest of the world. And, apparently, the 360′s dominance over the ps3 in the US is little more than an illusion. The fact that the ps3 will eventually outsell the 360 in worldwide sales is inevitable. I will, however, admit that the margin probably won’t be that big and it may not happen this year, but the Pintobox360 is going to need more than just the US if it plans on avoiding the bronze medal.
You say “no one cares about Flu-ray”. That’s only because it WON! If the battle was still neck and neck you’d be ranting all sorts of shit about it, how much it sucks, and how important it is. HDTVs are selling faster than you apparently are willing to admit. Downloads are never going to replace hard copies. Despite how much you people spew about how Blu-Ray is a pointless format for both games and movies, it will exist until it itself is succeeded by another format. Seriously, A Blu-Ray disk holds 50GB of data. Do you really want to download something of that size? That will (quite literally) take all day. Plus you can encounter all sorts of crazy shit problems like download errors, viruses, losing data, etc. Plus you can’t easily bring a 50GB file to a friends house or handle it when you buy another player. Face it, HDTV will become mainstream long before sufficient internet connections will be.
Oh, and FYI, the 360 and ps3 version of COD4 were identical.
@sm0ke
Im gona take and guess right here and say, nothing?
guys, you still don’t get it.
it’s “Blu-ray” and “HD DVD” not Blu-Ray or HD-DVD.
how hard can it be?

oh, in other news Phil-boy quit Sony because he want’s to get stuff actually done.
hey nextgen won the annual cum guzzling contest so congrads how much jizz did u have to swallow
@xeacons
I agree with the change is all good, sony knocked nintendo down and look where there at now. Also the market can handle three consoles so we all win in the end for there is plenty of games to play across each console.
I sure as shit wouldn’t want neither nintendo, sony or MS to get out of the console market since there products all have there goods and bads about them. Not only that why do ppl wanna see a platform fail in the first place is beyond me.
@xbox360FTW:
he’s now going to work his magic on atari apparently.
also, just because he resigned doesn’t mean anything bad…
I remember back in my teen days when I worked in the good old supermarkets I switched over from coles to woolworths and nothing bad happened to either of them.

You were a retail employee. Phil Harrison is a high-up corporate guy. No offense, but I think he meant a little more to Sony than you did to Coles.
isn’t it spelled with a k not a c sorry i cant think of it right now brain fart
@sm0ke:
*cough*gumpei yokoi*cough
@animekid
Didn’t Gumpei Yokoi invent the Gameboy and then he created Virtual Boy and that tanked. So didn’t nintendo basically gave him crap jobs to make him quit? Then after he quit he came up with the WonderSwan and that really didn’t take off either.
History is repeating itself just with sony this time instead of nintendo.
http://kotaku.com/360864/sony-allowing-competition-for-ps3-in+game-ads
@coldyellow:
so sony are going to be innovative?
don’t make me laugh.
@animekid
Stranger things have happened. 10-15 years ago did you think you would ever see Sonic and Mario in a game together? Hell I was even doubtful about Nintendo convincing ppl to buy a Wii and look at it now.
Sony being innovative is a hard sell to anyone, but neither one of us know for sure. I’m betting they will not come up with anything new though.
Sony has no need to be innovative, now that Blu-ray won. They’ve got what they wanted. Now they don’t have to rely on the PS3, especially if MS adds a Blu-ray drive for the 360.
Nintendo’s like the only one who’s been innovative. They’re not afraid to take chances. That’s why we’ve had the Power Glove, Virtual Boy, and many more. The NDS and Wii were experiments and Nintendo was prepared to watch them follow in the Virtual Boy’s footsteps. But the systems succeeded this time, is all.
But Atari, Sega, Microsoft, Sony, no one else has tried the many weird trials and failures that Nintendo has.
Except in their formats. You have to give Sony credit though. They’ve been trying to introduce their own format for almost 30 years now, and it finally won. If at first you don’t succeed…
It’s just Sony tends to give customers the cold shoulder once they got what they want.
Nextgentard, I is callin’ you out!
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/855/855216p1.html
If PS3 is so great, explain this!
@xeacons
Atari kinda got home videogames going in the late 70′s early 80′s.
Sega was the first (and kinda unsuccessfully) to add CD technology to home consoles.
Microsoft did online (that psn and virtual console are judged too) and added a ethernet port (and harddrive) to a home console.
Sony (up till know) always had a affordable piece of tech and made gamming “cool” to the mainstream.
@six1s:
OH NOES! AN OLD SHITTY GAME WAS PORTED BADLY! OMG THAT IS SO SONY’S FAULT!
@ColdYellow
Touche`
Okay, you got me. But I still stand by what I said about Sony having no need to innovate right now. They only added some “innovation” with sixaxis and such back in ’06 when they knew they were in dire straights. Now they own (or will within 5-10 years) the home movie market. They have no need for the PS3 to succeed anymore.
animekid3515,
It’s only shitty because Sony fanboys don’t want it now. It was shitty when it was an exclusive, then it was “BILLY COUNTS FUCK YEAH!” when it became multi.
In the end, the Wii will be known as the family game machine, the xbox 360 will be known as the true gaming console and the PS3 will be known as a cheap blue ray player.
Thats why load times suck on the PS3 and games are startingto utilize mandatory installs… Because Blue Ray technology is designed for movies, not for games. The fact that Sony combined them is only going to hurt them in the lnog wrong because everyone knows that just because the blue ray tech holds more storage, it causes increases problems with design architecture making it more difficult to develop games for and it increases load times by an incredible amount… Sony just figured they could sneak in their new Blue Ray movie technology by throwing it into a new playstation console. If I ever bought noe, it would be because i wanted a cheap blue ray player. Not to be used as a gaming console because the architecture is clearly inferior to the Wii and the 360.
And dont even get me started on the lame “six axis” controller. That stupid “technology” stolen from Nintendo was the biggest and lames last minute add on I’ve ever seen. Developers are laughing behind Sonys back about how stupid of an idea that was… Which is why no ones putting it to good use… Even first party games.
@six1s: I didn’t notice that, they all still hold a grudge against capcom…
@ mmikej24.
You still honestly believe that the SIXAXIS idea was ripped from nintendo? Where have you been for the past year? I thought this issue was put to rest a LONG time ago. Sony made a patent for a controller with six degrees of tilt sensitivity before the ps2 came out.
As long as I get to play great games, I really don’t care about HD-DVD vs Blue-ray.
I’m a 360 owner, love the console, and (being in the UK) I couldnt afford a PS3, the basic only-console costing £400+ whereas a 360 elite costing £250 for me.
The HD-DVD wasnt a factor, I dont have a HD TV, I dont care about it, if the 360 fails, I’ll get a PS3, I just want to play awesome games.
If one console has one killer game, another console will have another the next month. I dont care.
People should get over this ‘war’, focusing on game quality from 3′rd party devs should be the main focus, but all we have here is this bullshit about winning a war about who spent the most money. Seems pointless to be honest.
xeacons,
Blu-Ray will make more money for Sony than their videogame division ever has.
Once Blu-Ray hits its stride in the coming years it will generate 2 Billion in profits each year.
Hail Hitler hans!
@ Praetorian
Well actually they had motion sensitive controllers for the PC before Sony’s patent. But the point remains that when Sony announced the PS3 (the ugly one with the boomerang controller), they never mentioned the Six-Axis. They decided to include the six axis only after Nintendo started the big fuss over its Wii-mote.
You have to admit that the six axis adds very little to the PS3 gaming experience. It’s a cheap afterthought. Sony pulls that all the time… Just like trying to put the next playstation into a Blue Ray player when they should have kept them seperate. Since Blue Ray is such a horribly slow medium for gaming.
The next thing your going to tell me is that Sony using “Trophies” in HOME isnt a cheap rip off of Xbox achievements right?
Rest in peace so that Sony can chard you $300 more for an inferior product.
Doesn’t matter, Holographic DVD is the big kid on the block and he is gonna Blu Ray’s ass in a year or two.
Rofl PS3 r ghey when protected by fanboys. I hope they understood that comment. Anyway, the HD-DVD drive was optional and so it should be no problem for 360 owners. If Blu-Ray had failed the PS3 may have been sunk and if not there would be no easy way to fix the problem of Blu-Ray.
@mmikej24
I will admit, the Sixaxis has, thus far, offered very little towards gaming. Also, it probably would never have been incorporated had it not been for the Wii,but the idea was never “Stolen” from Nintendo as many people here allege. Also, the Wiimote has had disappointingly little to show for the gaming experience as well. Don’t get me wrong, the Wii has some great games, but all of those great games (Zelda, SSB, etc) could have been just as fun with a regular GC controller. the only possible exception would be Metriod Prime. The Wii fans always tout about Fun AND Innovation. So far its only been Fun OR Innovation. The Fun games are not innovative, and the Innovative games have not been very fun so far (Wii sports, Wii Play, Red Steel), If anyone here honestly things that Wii play was worth the $20 extra for the wiimote they are fooling themselves.
Euh no, you can’t call Blue-ray the official successor to DVD because that title goes to HD DVD (DVD forum said it). Blu-ray is the official next generation home video format, hence it IS the UNofficial next generation DVD format. That’s the correct wording.
blu-ray is the dvd succesor and ps3 is the xbox 360 succesor (and the wii destroyer)
