IGN: PS3 GTA4 Graphically Superior to Xbox 360 Version

Grand Theft Auto 4

IGN confirms what we already know: the definitive version of GTA4 is the Playstation 3 version. In a recent article they mentioned that the Xbox 360 version was plagued with aliasing while the Playstation 3 version is razor sharp with no graphical impurities marring the image quality. Unfortunately for fans of the series, Grand Theft Auto 4 was developed on the Xbox 360 as the baseline engine, so the Playstation 3 version is severely gimped compared to what it could have been if the title was developed to tailor towards the Playstation 3′s superior hardware specifications exclusively.

Here’s the article excerpt: http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/855/855555p1.html

“For the first time, Rockstar gave us hands-on access to both the PS3 and 360 versions of GTA IV. The good news is that no matter which system you prefer, you’re going to have a great-looking game to play. There are only some minor visual differences noticeable between the two preview versions. The 360 build is brighter and has slightly more vibrant color while the PS3 build has less aliasing issues. Both display a solid, consistent framerate even during scenes with heavy pedestrian traffic and wild explosions. While graphics whores will find subtle differences to nitpick, the average Joe is going to be happy with either version.”

1. Definitive version?

Sure, it looks better, but I think I’d rather have the extra 360 exclusive DLC, over slightly better visuals.

You guys need to be covering Brawl. Loosen focus on the 360 for a while.

2. Yeah, another SDF article that leans toward the PS3 though the 360 version will technically be better. I do only own a PS3 but with the 360 version having the DLC from the start the 360 version will be slightly better. I do like the fact that there is less aliasing because I hate jaggies, PC to PS3 convert though I wish I would have built another computer, but, the PS3 holds me off.

Either version will give you a great experience, but as of now, if you are deciding with version to get, if you want more replay value I would go with the 360 version but if you want a sharper experience on your 1080p display I would go for the PS3 version. I do have the Special Edition on reserve the day it comes out and can’t wait. Though I do think eventually the PS3 version will get the DLC but it wouldn’t be for a while, but, the demand for it will be there and Rockstar could make a nice chunk of change if they release it on the PSN.

Good things come to those who wait, as most PS3 owners can attest to.

3. @ Panda
The 360 version is only to have another chain of missions if I recall, and since GTA games really don’t let players replay missions another chain would just get in the way of the already long 1 way story of the game. Atleast GTA SA was like that for me, it had way too many pointless and upmost useless missions which kind of annoyed me. Only missions I liked were the Agent’s and Zero’s missions just because they were different enough to the point they were fun, the rest all felt like endless waves of repeat missions of kill him, chase him. lol

@Panda

I agree with you. I too rather have the DLC than less “jaggies” anyday.

@hans

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3161552

That should get you thinking. Also IGN didn’t mention the PS3 or 360 verison being the definitive version you slandering asshole. Stop making shit up.

5. Yay for SDF telling another strait up LIE. I just Googled “GTA IV Definitive Version” and it comes up with only sites that say the 360 is the definitive version. Don’t you just love how SDF bends everything lmao, they think sharper images makes it more definitive, haha, yes it may mean our PS3s have a bit more power but the 360 players get more replay value.

6. Once again, better hardware is Sony’s downfall. It’s always the inferior console that leads. Do people need that extra hundred pixels?
The PS2 proved you don’t.
Take Resident Evil 4. Clearly better graphics on the Gamecube, but the PS2 handled a downgrade quite well. When you get in the game, you forget about the slightly lesser graphics.

In fact, the PS2 proved that a system like the PS3 can never win.

7. “While graphics whores will find subtle differences to nitpick, the average Joe is going to be happy with either version.”

IGN said it. And SDF agreed.

8. P.S.

I never really cared for any missions in the GTA series anyway. They were just drive-and-shoot from GTA3 to SA.

I liked just going out and doing my thing. Personally, I liked Bully better. Which, by the way, is due out for the 360 and Wii, with the PS2 copy out last year. Leaving the PS3 the only outcast. I think Rockstar’s learning.

9. If by definitive you mean slightly better looking but with 10-20 less hours of content, then yes.

10. “Though I do think eventually the PS3 version will get the DLC but it wouldn’t be for a while”

I doubt they will get it at all seeing how much money microsoft dropped for them.

11. And it is worth keeping in mind that the 360 was the lead platform, all this says is that GTA isnt going to pull a portal

@ xeacons

Butthurt much?

You really are a moron. “In fact, the PS2 proved that a system like the PS3 can never win.”

Wow the PS2 is so underpowered. God forbid consoles released ~2 years after the PS2 is released have better specs that the PS2. Thanks for playing console fanboyism Captain Obvious.

The PS2 ruled supreme due to the game library. Nothing more, nothing less. The only thing specs have to do with sales is price. Just because the Wii is cheap doesn’t make the games not garbage.

Also, saying a ported game looks worse on the PS2 is so redundant I don’t even know why I’m replying to your post. You are an idiot.

@ fatman

lol 20 hours, fat fucking chance. If you think the PS3 won’t get DLC then you’re an idiot. Sorry, but no. Just because MS paid for EXCLUSIVE DLC doesn’t mean that the PS3 version will get no DLC.

Jesus Christ, go back to bed you 12 year old fuckheads. If you hate the PS3 so much why do you spend so much time on SDF? Someone’s a bit jealous.

P.S., I’m not raging. I just like pointing out flaws in VERY poor trolling.

13. Did you READ THE FUCKING ARTICLE? The 360 version “is brighter and has slightly more vibrant color”. For people like me using an SDTV, I don’t give a rat’s ass about aliasing, you can see color and brightness on any TV, SD or HD.

Oh, and read this: MGS4 would have extra features, but it can’t fit on a 50GB BRD…

http://ps3.qj.net/Hideo-Kojima-Blu-ray-doesn-t-have-enough-space-for-Metal-Gear-Solid-4/pg/49/aid/114921

14. Ey 360UP if you only have a SDTV shut the fuck up

and panda you are going to have to pay for the extra stuff. you really think that they pay all the money so you can have it for free? idiot.

15. @PS3UP
“if you only have a SDTV shut the fuck up”

So my opinion means nothing since I haven’t been bothered to spend a shitload of money on a new TV? I would bet that around half of all PS3s sold are connected to SDTVs.

16. Also, it’s the same game on both systems other than that. It’s not like the Cell processor enhances the story.

17. I Wiip for Sony Says:
March 2nd, 2008 at 11:23 pm

What a MASSIVE difference!
No mention of the gimped PS3 ports here, are there? How odd. Also, notice the 360 version colors are more vibrant than the PS3′s.
“Just because MS paid for EXCLUSIVE DLC doesn’t mean that the PS3 version will get no DLC” Yeah, but it sure isn’t going to get whatever else extra MS is getting.

18. @Lumina “The 360 version is only to have another chain of missions if I recall”
You’re joking, right?

Think of it this way: GTA3 had spinoffs, GTA: VC and GTA: SA. Neither of those games were called GTA4, so you could consider them to be in the same universe of GTA3 even though they had different characters, settings, etc.

Now we get GTA4, and exclusive episodic content going to the 360 version which Microsoft paid $50 million for Rockstar to develop. If you think the “episodic content” is just another string of missions, you’re intensely deluded.

19. 360 and PS3 trading blows fairly evenly, with the 360 having a little lead.

Yeah, the story hasn’t changed at all.

20. nextgenuser Says:
March 3rd, 2008 at 2:48 am

Nothing new to say, PS3 version will be better.
Xboxers doesnt have a Full HD TV (because xbox isnt Full HD), so they will not notice the colour difference. I prefer a better graphics than “colours”.

That shows how weak is 360, even GTAIV is gimped on 360 now. GTAIV is a PORT from 360, and it will be better on PS3, that’s a fucking win.

About MGS: They have space problems because PS3 needs Full HD graphics, so its hard to fit everything in a single BD. That’s why Xbox will never have MGS, unless they make a MGS with 15 DVD’s and gimped graphics.

Win, pure win, epic win. See you on next topic (I like to ignore xboxers, because they know I’m right and I dont answer them, ohhh the pleasure…)

21. I find it weird that the ps3 can hold up to 7 controllers.

Why?

I DEMAND ANSWER NAO!!

22. ColdYellow Says:

@burtybeetle

I think what xeacons is saying is that the PS2 (even underpowered by the xbox and GC) had better games than those systems combined. You even mentioned the PS2 had or has a better library. So isn’t it far to say the 360 has (at them moment) has a better library of games than the PS3?

23. animekid3515 Says:
March 3rd, 2008 at 6:16 am

who cares.
GTA’s always repetitive as fuck either way.

24. So the 360 has more content where the PS3 has slightly shinier graphics? Content beats graphics every single time. Another FAIL for Sony Defense Force.

26. Why is it that people think they can insult someone just because they show a different opinion, this is meant to the comments on this site, not the sites content, Which is obviously just for a laugh, which it does quite well, but if whoever posts this stuff is actually serious about the content on the site then I feel sorry for him haha.

Also why is it that people argue over pieces of hardware like it really matters because I choose a console for it’s games, not because it’s a Playstation or it’s an Xbox, I just find the arguments over consoles pointless because there’s nothing to gain from it.

It’s hardware people, who honestly cares, just because you like one console over the other doesn’t make the other console inferior in anyway?

Also on a side note, I can’t wait for GTA, I plan to buy it as soon as it comes out, or rent it. :P

27. Kojima(your god) says that there isn’t enough space on Blu-gay!

28. “who cares.
GTA’s always repetitive as fuck either way.”

The only valid argument in this thread!

29. @burtybeetle

You just proved my point. You know why the PS2 had the best library?

Because it was the least powerful of it’s generation. The PS3 in now the most powerful for this gen. Which is why it’s not getting the games. It’s why the Gamecube flopped. And everything the GC did wrong, so did the PS3.

Sony said it themselves. They’re weeding out the “trash” so only the “best of the best” can be shown. The limits the content quite a bit.

The most powerful system is also the most expensive. Obviously, companies like EA aren’t having a problem, but what about the smaller developers? Sony’s giving them the finger. No more friends in low places.

The Wii on the other hand is following in the PS2′s footsteps (with their own little twist). Sales are proving it.

30. P.S.
As for the “low” price, keep in mind the PS2 was a $100 more than the GC. Obviously, people don’t care. But developers do.

“Kojima(your god) says that there isn’t enough space on Blu-gay!”

Even funnier (maybe not for the POS3 fan-jock straps here) is the fact that 50 Gig isn’t enough for all that craptacular CGI in MGS4! Wow, talk about efficient coding …. NOT!

As far as GTA, content is everything! POS3=no games library, 360=huge games library. Now do you see why the 360 beats POS3 everytime!

Did I mention $ony sucks!!!

Has anyone noticed that Hans states “the definitive version of GTA4 is the Playstation 3 version” and in the same paragraph he typed this, “Playstation 3 version is severely gimped compared to what it could have been if the title was developed to tailor towards the Playstation 3’s superior hardware specifications exclusively.”

So the question is this: how can the PS3 version be the definitive version if its gimped according to Hans?
So Hans just contradicted himself.

34. “While graphics whores will find subtle differences to nitpick, the average Joe is going to be happy with either version.”

wow the irony in the article, lol

35. @PS3UP

Since I’m not as ALMIGHTY AWESOME OMG as you, I have an SDTV… in my bedroom, where I do most of my gaming. It’s not a bad one, but it doesn’t beat the 43″ 1080i TV that I have downstairs (family TV). Don’t flame me for only having an SDTV/1080i TV, you can see colors/brightness on ANY TV, SD or HD.

Eh, I’ve always hated GTA (GTA3 and up. 1 & 2 were, and still are, amazing.). It’s fun and all, it’s just that I’ve never really ever done the missions. It’s alot more fun just playing around and using cheat codes. But hey, I’m all down for a Crackdown 2! (Now that’s some Grade-A fun!) :D

Anyways, I uh, don’t have a PS3, but I do know when a game’s fun or not, and I don’t think the fun factor will be much of a difference on either console, unless of course the only way you can have fun is to pick at a game. Well, instead of this I’ll be probably havin’ fun with Fable (1) whilst awaiting Fable 2.

42. So the Xbox 360 version is confirmed that the DLC will be a completely new episode in the same effect that San Andreas/ Vice City were new episodes of GTA3, and the PS3 will have a few extra missions bolted on for thier DLC.

But forget that slight addition, the PS3 is the definitive version because it has slightly less jaggies. Just like the 360 had NO jaggies and the PS3 was full of jaggies on DMC4.

Yea, good one SDF you really are a bunch of fuck wads. Douches!!

well, hate to sound biased here.
but the fact is that MGS4 has way more differences between it and MGS3, than brawl has to melee.

44. animekid3515,
But it’s still a “metal gear solid”, by SDF logic, that makes it a sequel, therefore a rehash, therefore shit!

45. In other news, SSBB blows PS3 games out of the water!

46. I’m buying the superior PS3 version.

47. xbox360FTW Says:
March 4th, 2008 at 10:56 am

Hans, that’s it? “I’m buying the superior PS3 version.” See, I know you are a stupid fan boy, but, when you want to participate in a conversation and make an argument, you generally have to have some facts to back up the argument. Well, “superior PS3 version” is an opinion, not a fact. Here is a fact: the 360 version has MORE content, looks the same as POS3. Thus, the superior version is the 360! See, facts.

No go back to your room in the basement of your parents house and die a lonely death, just like the other POS3 tards. Enjoy the gimped version of GTA and the craptacular CGI fest known as MGS!

48. animekid3515 Says:
March 4th, 2008 at 11:09 am

@six1s: no, a rehash is where they make a sequel and make no attempt to change anything about the game.
this could be said similarly to half life 2 (only ep 1 and ep 2) because they run on the same gameplay engine with the same models and everything, but they’re episodic games, so that’s to be expected.
brawl does nothing to advance gameplay, it’s still the same old game with some extra characters and stuff…
now MGS4 completely hauls it away from any tankers, any jungles, and sticks you in a destroyed city-warzone, completely new setting.
now the gameplay, instead of being gritty and annoying, gives you an easier FPS mode, and introduces over-the-shoulder view.
and then the changing textures on the suit, now THAT is what I like to call “well designed”

49. animekid3515 Says:
March 4th, 2008 at 11:10 am

and I hate to say it, but that scratches the surface of it.
oh wait, I love to say that…

50. The 360 version doesn’t contain more content. You have to pay for that content.

I don’t want the extra content, so I want the graphically superior version.

Thus, obviously, I’m getting the superior PS3 version.

Answer me this or can’t you because you don’t have an answer. Also do you even know what anti-aliasing is?

One more question; Would you rather play a gimped version of a game that runs and plays like shit or play a slightly (and I mean very slightly) less graphically game that runs smooth as silk?

MGS2 worked, and they earned my purchase by sticking in that brilliant camouflage system.

64. Neil Corbett, the lead QA for Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 4 (for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360), recently posted an interesting tidbit regarding the game on rllmukforum.com. He discussed the major differences between the two versions of the game as well as the exclusive content found on the Xbox 360 version.

Here’s a quote from Corbett explaining the fundamental differences between the two platform versions of the game:

Hello, as it stands the Xbox 360 version has the smoother framerate & far faster loading times (without any installing) but the PS3 version does have that warm feeling with bleached out sunsets & the like. The extra content of the 360 version is significant but nothing like an ‘extra Island’ at all- as the lead platform it is currently the superior version however. Just you wait until your first windscreen-flying experience.

It seems like the graphical difference between the two platforms is what sets the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game apart. However, we still have to see for ourselves exactly how the upcoming title will play itself out once it goes live.

Why can’t you answer any of my questions hans?
Can’t you not answer what is the PS3 version; gimped or definitive it can’t be both.

68. The PS3 version is BOTH GIMPED AND SUPERIOR.

GIMPED in that the title is not developed exclusively for the PS3; it could look a lot better if it wasn’t being held back by the limitations of the 360.

SUPERIOR in the fact that the title is better looking than the 360 version.

You have terrible reading comprehension.

69. “MGS2 worked, and they earned my purchase by sticking in that brilliant camouflage system.”

Good point. Hadn’t thought of that, but you’re right.

70. Now after thinking about it for 4 minutes, I want to change my earlier stance on adding features. As long as they don’t make the game completely unplayable for some, and doesn’t change the “tone” (lack of better word) I am completely fine. Thanks, animekid3515, for letting me see the truth.

1. One that surpasses another in rank or quality

Definitive
3. Authoritative and complete

I’m actually dumbfounded that you know what “comprehension” is. Unfortunatly you don’t know the meaning of any the words you use and that’s what the meaning of this post is.
Also you CAN’T have a GIMPED AND SUPERIOR version of anything at anytime it doesn’t happen. You also TRIED to change your own wording also: “the DEFINITVE version of GTA4 is the Playstation 3 version”.
So here is another question for you: How can something be messed up and broken but can surpass in quality and complete even though it’s messed up?

I will give you the answer; it can’t be.

@Hans

Gimped Superior-
definition
1. Best at being messed up
2. The suckiest of the suck.
3. Fucked up beyond repair or recognition. aka FUBAR.

Now using Gimped Superior in a sentence

Hans was told by Nextgenuser, “that the blowjob he gave him was gimped superior.”

85. So does this mean that SDF is referring to themselves as whores? As the story states only graphics whores will even care about the small differences.

@erik

yup SDF is graphic whores. Hell they would settle for a polished turd with bump mapping and reflective surfaces and call it a good game.

@sonyrox23:
if it’s the size of SA, we can expect quite a wait.
I’ll probably get the 360 version, having a few aliasing issues is better than having bland grey and brown crap like gears of war, resistance, and other shooters.
also, I prefer the controller layout of the 360 for a game like this, because my hands are pretty much symmetrical, whereas FPS, I prefer my new NYKO rumble controller as it has all the symmetry for FPS as the ps3 sixaxis and DS3, and it even has the cupped thumb sticks of the 360 controller.
AWESOMENESS!

92. wtf happened to all the comments? I only see 92.

93. Quote “The 360 build is brighter and has slightly more vibrant color while the PS3 build has less aliasing issues”

On the same sentence, it does say something that 360 does better (brighter and better color), and you basically trash the 360 version?

Remember that GTA was ready for the 360 to be launched in 2007 but due to the PS3 version plagued with problems and all, they had to delay the release.

94. Damn if all these ps3 haters are bashing the ps3 get the fuck out damn!!! why is it called SONY DEFENSE FORCE, ur crapp RROD system is always talking shit about the ps3 its about time a site like this was made cuz u all make it seeem the 360 is gonna always be the better choice and how it has no games????? WTF?? 2008 mofos this is the year and the beginning of wat sony has been trying to accomplish since the beginning. for the ps3 haters get the fuck off the site and why did u register to this site if u know this site is going to bash the 360. OH and I’m also picking the PS3 version of GTA since i prefer a reliable system with free online and HOME coming on its way lmaooo its gonna make ur crappy live look like childs play i can promise u that.

PS3 FTW !!!!!!!!!!!!

95. Kotaku says Ps3 version has more AA issues but less loads, pop-ins and performs better overall.
