Microsoft Defense Force continues to crumble, Dan Hsu leaves 1up
Micosoft Defense Force is having some tough times. Earlier this year Ziff Davis filed for bankruptcy, 1up employees have been leaving in droves, just last week Games for Windows Magazine was shut down and now the overlord of 1up, Dan “Shoe” Hsu is quitting to pursue “other interests”. But lets not dwell on that, lets take a look back at a few of Dan Hsu’s unbiased reviews of Microsoft products.

Also, you’re missing out an important fact that because Ziff Davis wsa linked to the 1up messageboards. A massive lockdown on forum content occured because ZD was recieving a whole lot of complaints about pornography, racial slurs and other offensive material being posted on there and cut half of the forums out because of it.
ZD has been going down for a long time, the reviews are nothing to do with it kiddo.
On the latest (or last weeks) 1up Yours podcast; Shane Bettenhouse was talking about he played through MGS4 in Tokyo and was RAVING how good it was. So I would say that is not a bias preview at all. Also Dan Shu hit the nail on the head in my opinion on his review of Gears.

The reasons I was so chuffed when I traded in my third 360 for a Ps3 were:
no more reliability worries
much less noise
popular opinion is that it’s the one that’s currently fulfilling the least of it’s potential and it’s already impressive (games wise)
multfuntional,I never owned a PC and I’ve really come to appreciate a good internet argument,also I just realised today that it’ll play me music at the same time.

These sound more like excuses, not a list of how I’ld benefit from buying a PS3 right now. And I seriously would go out and buy one if someone here can convince me of all the “great” features that I would benefit from if I got one.
As your answers are more of a rant again the 360 rather than trying to sell me a PS3, I’ll just refute what you have to say instead.
Firstly, If you hated the 360 so much, why did you wait until your third to finally make up your mind?
Reliability? I’ve had my 360 for two years now with not a problem whatsoever. From what I hear and what I’ve read, the PS3 has it’s own malfuncions as well. Recently an aquantaince of mine had to send his PS3 in for repairs and pay $150 for that repair work as well, his PS3 is less than a year old.
Noise? My PC makes much more noise than my 360, I can’t even hear my 360 over the games that I’m playing on it.
The games? As far as I know, the games are not even of great quality, nothing jaw-dropping at least. I also hear too much about frame rate issues regarding some games for it. There’s not really that much of a gaming library for it for me to pick and choose from.
Multifuntional? I already have a PC and my PC is playing music right now as we speak as well as me chatting over the internet through mic and camera to a dear old friend of mine.
Argument? So you set this out to be an argument rather than trying to persude me to buy a PS3 as I requested from you?
I think I’m wasting my time, can anyone else be more civil about this and help make my mind up about the PS3?

yeah i think his review on gears was spot on as well. if anything gears really had it in fun factor. it was pretty damn satisfying to destroy your enemies especially co op.

Sony Fanboy Force not biased? Okay, prove it. I want to see positive, that is 10/10 reviews for 360 and Wii games. 1up has positive reviews for all systems, and if you are less biased than they then you would also have such reviews right?

Gears of War had loads of problems, still the good parts out weighted the bad parts. Hence it getting a good score and massive sales.
So tbh, who realy gives a shit? GOW is about 1 1/2yrs old and was out before the POS3 was released.
Hold up, SDF are seriously getting desperate now. The date of that review was 11/06/06. Not far off 2 yrs ago. And they drag it up now.
I’m just wondering where they got the “award winning coverage” from as they describe in their site’s header.
What award and when? What for? Who by? I think it’s just safe to say that 90% of what’s said on this site is utter bullshit.
I’m still convinced that not one PS3 fan here can give me a list of reasons of why I should buy a PS3 and how I would benefit from it without bashing the 360 or mentioning it at all.

i could name great features that the ps3 has over xbox and vice versa but the real point is do u really want a ps3 or are u looking for an arguement.
well here goes anyways.
upscaling- yes upscaling! popular to contary thought ps3 can upscale your current dvds and games (with a few adjustsments manually)! 360 can only upscale games. its dvd player is very poor quality.
blu ray player! yes one of the best features on the ps3 is a bluray player. believe it or not i actually like hi def movies and if you have the right tv for it you should at least rent some. the 360 does offer movie downloads but the quality is very poor due to compression. there is no wow factor as opposed to a blu ray movie.
games! yes the thing actually plays games. damn good ones as well. like rachet and clank (definitely one of the most underrated games of last year) warhawk (insane 32 player online dedicated servers with tons of hours worth of replay) uncharted ( a really good game with superb voice acting, gameplay and story) plenty of spectacular games this year on it.
online features- its much easier and faster to get a game on psn than it is on the 360. i think its mainly because of how broken matchmaking is on the 360. games don’t disconnect just because some jerk quit. most games have dedicated servers. i have yet to play a laggy game on the PSN. however, it lack alot of features the 360 has. although sony is playing catchup and it should be a little more on par with the 360 come summer. best of all its free! gee, should i get a brand new game? or renew my gold account? or i could buy it for the ps3 and get free online? mmmm decisions decisions.
media hub. ps3 is by far the best multimedia console. it syncs up with my pc even better than my 360. everytime i put a movie in it feels really nice and classy. its silent disc drive, its small barely noticible lights turns my living room into a theater with 7.1 sound. the media capabilities on the 360 are just a mere afterthought.
i could go on about i much i like my ps3 but then again i could also go on about how much i like my 360. so my recommendation is get one if you can but wait until dualshock 3 is released and bundled with the system. the sixaxis controls are alright but since theres no rumble the sixaxis controller feels like a damn toy. want to know more just ask. i love my 360 but my console of choice is my ps3. SPOOKY isnt it?

I think only a couple of things won’t benefit me really… but I feel they’re important.
The blu-ray player is pretty much useless to me I’m afraid. I have an analogue TV, I can afford to get an HDTV but it’s out of the question considering I don’t plan to stay in the UK for no more longer than a couple of years. Spending on it then leaving it behind would be something that would break my heart. That fact on top of the cat in my room, I don’t fancy chancing coming home to a smashed screen on the floor.
I have lots of DVDs too, I mostly watch independant movies and they’re hard to find on DVD as it is at times, I don’t fancy my chances ever finding them again on blu-ray. So sadly, that whole feature is pretty much void for me. :/
I agree that Rachet and Clank looks really good and my boyfriend likes the look of Warhawk too. But we’re worried of what comes after that, I have no interest in GT, MGS or Final Fantasy games as I’ve had my fill of them, the only other game that looks semi decent is Little Big World, but I’m worried about how long I’ld be waiting for a new game to come out after that what I’ld enjoy.
I agree on the free onlineline playing thing. LIVE is okay, but I have a problem with the subscription fee, you don’t realise how fast a year goes until you’ve been hit with a message telling you that your subscription is about to run out.
The upscaling thing would be nice too.
The problem is, because I can’t get a HDTV and Blu-ray discs are not very practical to me, I can’t really use it as an entertainment hub otherwise. So I’m not getting my £300 worth out of the PS3 if you know what I mean. If they decide to lower the price to around £240, then yes… I’ld pick one up, but missing out on those features means that I’m only relying on the gaming side… there’s my prediciment. :/

hmmm lets c after playing this game for a year and a half straight i will agree with some of the things like dom dying alot but he’s AI of course he is going to. Limited modes yes but annex is fun online lag depends on the host Chainsaw doesn’t start up sometimes true ok enough about the negative

those 4 modes (annex wasn’t out when review was written) SHIT load of fun exacution is lots of fun and really in your face, Warzone fun but don’t try and beat the host lancer its not gonna happen, Annex great fun i could play this for hours,Assanation SUCKS. the weapons are some of the funest to use boomShot my friend took out a whole clan with just 2 shots in it HEADSHOT i say that this game has the best headshots ive ever seen with tht satisfying pop omg i still love it and if u werent an active whore (used active on sniper to down people all the time) you were really good and it showed i could go on and on about how much i love this game i still love it yes there are problems with it but it is still a very beautifil game and when its played right u will never want to put it down

agreed if you cant get your moneys worth there is really no point in investing in one since its somewhat expensive. but you should definitely keep one in mind. little big planet seems very promising with a map creator and user made levels as well as the ability to trade levels with your friends. that game will virtually have infinite replay value. if the gaming library troubles you know then it will be wise to wait until christmas of this year, by that time a nice price drop will be in effect, the online features of the ps3 will be polished, and the library of games will be significant to validate your purchase. go ahead and add me

I picked up a PS3 about a month ago so I can have a blu-ray player. Since I already have a 360 I didn’t really have a use for the games.
After a few weeks of owning one I wanted to see if the PS3 is as good or better as a gaming machine so I rented RSV2 and borrowed Warhawk from a friend.
Suffice to say the PS3 is completely worthless as a gaming machine… BUT it’s a great blu-ray player.
There aren’t any worthwhile exclusives out so if you want it to play games, save your money, if you’re looking to start watching HD movies then pick one up.

I’m in the same boat as you are: HDTV or PS3. The gamer side of me says to get a PS3 but then I can’t enjoy the HD of the PS3 or 360. Then the techie side says to get a HDTV but then I screw myself over and then won’t be able to play MGS4, RFOM, or Rachet and Clank.

Christmas will probably be the best time to see how things pan out for the PS3 for sure. Hopefully Sony will steer away from planning out sequels or movie franchise games and move onto developers who can make some fantastic independant and original games. I’m hoping they will drop the price a couple of more times before then becuse if they do – I’ll definatly get one. If not me, then my boyfriend as a PAL PS3 would be useless to me by the time I’m over in the US.

Yeh, it’s a real big shame that the PS3 is more of an theatre/entertainment hub at the moment rather than a gaming console. Like, too much effort was going into these wars between the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray that Sony just pushed back gaming into a second priority. To be honest, I’m on low income, I’m a careful gamer who plays the best when I can afford to and it also worries me that if I did buy a PS3 when the games eventually start pumping out for it… what am I going to do really? I’ld be buying two different versions of games at times but what will the real differences be between them? It’s really confusing right now regarding which one to choose when there isn’t any real, exceptional differences in games… even with GTA4 really. :/

Mhmm, I can see myself in about a year or two years time, I’ll probably own a PS3 along with an HDTV. But right now, it just all seems all so over-expensive. I’m having the same feeling towards the government forcing people in the US to buy Digital enabled televisions soon just because they’re deciding to cease reception to analogue TVs. It’s really crazy.
