SDF Review: Buzz! Hollywood (PS2)

buzz hollywood

As a trivia aficionado, I’ve spent a lot of time trying to find the best places to enjoy my competitive trivia-playing passion. From playing quizzo at the local bars, to buying any number of board games that purport to feature finely-crafted trivia, my friends have become accustomed to my passion for playing (and generally winning) trivia games of all sorts. Buzz! Hollywood Trivia for the PS2 offers a novel way to indulge my trivia addiction. With questions themed around Hollywood and the movies, almost anyone can play. Everyone loves movies; everyone has seen movies. This game skips right over the arcane trivia of European History and Geography and gets right into subjects about which everyone has knowledge. And if you don’t know the answer, you can always guess!

As for game play, the game comes with a set of 4 game controllers designed specifically to serve the purposes of the game and allow it to live up to it’s “Buzz!” name. The game is set up like a TV-based game show instead of the boring and flat board-game type trivia game. Players choose a contestant and buzz-in sound to represent them (I’m partial to the belch); all of the possible contestants are silly and make for ridiculous between-round animated antics. Questions are either text, picture, or film-clip based, and run the range of Hollywood movies–from the classics to recent releases. The game even makes use of your eye toy (if you have one attached) to increase the silliness of play and encourage your friends to work on their impersonations.

All-in-all, I give this game a 9 out of 10. It makes for a lot of fun evenings competing with friends over movie knowledge. (And what gamer doesn’t enjoy competing, even on a knowledge-based plane.) Too bad Microsoft, in it’s infinite wisdom, has only chosen to venture into the trivia market with Scene It? (a game notable only for two things–it’s colossal failure and the derivative nature of it’s entire existence). Although, I suspect the adolescent Xbot audience could find little use for a game that makes you want to actually interact with real life friends and create social connections. Buzz! Hollywood Trivia is obviously a great game choice for any individual possessing friends, family, or anything other than a Halo-based reality.

  1. “a game notable only for two things–it’s colossal failure and the derivative nature of it’s entire existence”
    I think you’re confusing that game with your website.

  2. But in all seriousness, had this been on a non-Sony system, you would have blasted it.
    Just goes to show that SDF are the type who would run out and get barb wire enemas if Sony started making them.

    Where’s the review of Haze?

    WTF……………

    What is this….I don’t even……………

    How will this spawn arguments? I must make one!

    Pokemon is better than Haze + MSG4 + The Entire POS3 Game Collection.

    @six1s – Just goes to show…you’re still annoying.

    @OMG – Hehe.

    And why is there an offer to get a free 360 to my right?

  6. You’ve GOT to be kidding. There are SO MANY better PS2 titles out there right now. I mean, look at Arcana Heart, KOF XI, Guilty Gear X2 Accent Core. Any of those would be a better choice to review than a trivia game. And sorry, You Don’t Know Jack has this beat (I’ve played the PSone version so many times I had all the answers memorized).

    I mean, not to say this game is bad, I don’t know. But this game is about as filler as you can get. It’s a quick to produce and release game. That’s why it already has like 3 other versions of it out already.

    THIS over a Haze review? For shame. Your future console overlord is displeased.

  8. I’m fairly sure that Microsoft will survive without delving into this genre.

    If I’m reading this right then SDF finds film history more important than human history? If thats the case then applaud the writers for this site to be complete morons with no sense of importance.

  10. Atleast it isn’t another shooter is god style review. Nice seeing a different type of game show up now and then on some website’s news front page. lol

  13. So instead of reviewing Haze you review some shitty old game like Buzz!?!?!?! (not that the game is bad, buzz rocks!)

    I would really appreciate this site (blog) having a review chart that shows all the scores it gave to games…
    So we could compare the newer ones (PS3) with the old games ( xbox 360) and see how much the sony machine is kicking the Microsoft red reing system’s ass !!

    @charleytony

    I have asked this question to others before you and could never get a straight answer (online and in person) and here it is; What makes the PS3 so great (besides the blu-ray, cell and etc.) and why shit on the other consoles?
    BTW I’m planning on buying a PS3 before end of the year and it is a legit question.

    @misuse of lasers

    The only reason we haven’t seen a HAZE review is because no matter how much you polish a turd its still a turd.

    @ColdYellow – There’s nothing great about the PS3, 360, or Wii. I don’t think there is an argument out there that can prove that a system is “greater” than another.

    It is a more expensive system, and while some of you don’t think it’s worth the extra money. To some it is – including myself. It’s great having a Blu-Ray player. I know a lot of people don’t even have an HD-TV, but for those that do, it’s such a good bonus. I wouldn’t plan on getting one if it already didn’t come with the PS3. That’s what makes it such a welcomed addition.

    I’m not much of an online gamer, but I do like going on once in a while, and that’s what makes the free PSN better than LIVE for me.

    I also love the feel of the PS3 controller. I also prefer the sexy piano black look of the PS3 in my living room.

    Like I’ve said before, there is just no way I would miss out on the PS3 exclusives. I’ve grown up with those franchises, and am very loyal. I’ve played some good exclusive games for the PS3. But I know there is nothing in the world that will convince X-Boxers that I have.

  21. NeoOfTheSith Says:
    May 26th, 2008 at 10:05 am
  22. Needs more arguments.

    My Atari 2600 has better games then your pathetic POS3. And my N64 has better online.

  23. @ Stickemup

    You have valid reasons for enjoying your PS3, and I’m not going to argue with them. Out of all the pro-PS3 commenters on this site, you’re the only one who makes any sense.

    Likewise, I prefer the 360 because I prefer the controller, like playing online, and I don’t care about Blu-Ray. Being able to stream music from my laptop when I play is a really nice feature, and the VGA cables mean I don’t have to buy a huge TV to play in high definition.

    It’s a personal choice. I’ll joke about other consoles, but I’m not going to put too much effort into flaming… it takes away valuable gaming time.

  24. ColdYellow Says:
    May 26th, 2008 at 11:34 am

    @stickemup

    Thats what makes you cool; you can give a justifiable reasons to own a PS3 or to purchase one and not the same old shit everyone knows about it. I still can’t wait to get one and then the trifecta will be complete (all 3 current gen consoles and more money sucked out of my bank account).

  25. PlayItBogart Says:
    May 26th, 2008 at 11:42 am

    Admittedly I’ve been wondering why nobody has bothered to put out a next gen version of Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy. You could increase the replayability by tracking which categories have already been played and you could download new ones too.

  26. @Stickemup

    “It is a more expensive system, and while some of you don’t think it’s worth the extra money. To some it is – including myself. It’s great having a Blu-Ray player. I was close to buying the PS3 for the listed reasons above. That is until I found out that the PS3 is no longer the cheapest Blu-Ray player on the market. I saw one at $288. It saved me from the PS3.

    I’m saving up for a PS3 right now. I’m drooling over MGS4, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, and other PS3 exclusives. My 360 isn’t providing as much entertainment as it used to because my friends aren’t on as much playing GTAIV, so I’ve only been playing GoW online. I’m going to check out older PS3 stuff like Resistance 1 and Uncharted for sure, though. My username will finally make sense when I get one.

  30. Stickemup Says:
    May 26th, 2008 at 3:39 pm

    @sm0ke – There ya go. I can see exactly why you own one :)

    @ColdYellow – You lucky bastard hehe. You better get LBP and send me some of your levels.

    @Ninsonysoft – Awesome man. Like I said a lil’ while back, I’m replaying Uncharted in HD, and there are moments that are just so amazing. The jet-ski part of the game feels so real, I kid you not, it almost makes you feel like you’re wet. Check it out for sure. It’s a really awesome game to start off with when you get your PS3.

  31. Stickemup Says:
    May 26th, 2008 at 3:47 pm

    @erik – I really don’t get your logic. If you’re going to drop $300 on a Blu-Ray player anyway, you’re basically saying a PS3 isn’t worth an extra $100?

    One of your biggest gripes with the PS3 seems to be the price, but if you’re already in the market for a Blu-Ray player, then the price for a PS3 for you is a little over $100.

    Which isn’t bad at all.

  32. Keri ain’t gonna upgrade to Ps3 until it costs $5, and comes with a device for removing sand from one’s vagina.

    The last 3 articles have been kinda boring, there are enough boring gamer sites already. Where’s the hate? where’s the sublime immaturity? where are the laughs? I can supply the hate and immaturity but that’s it.

  33. ColdYellow Says:
    May 26th, 2008 at 4:04 pm

    @stickemup

    I’m not sure you want me to send you levels in LBP. I made levels in N+ that I can’t beat but are do able. I have had some ideas for LBP though but I going to keep them to my self (no spoilers).

  34. @Stickemup

    “@erik – I really don’t get your logic. If you’re going to drop $300 on a Blu-Ray player anyway, you’re basically saying a PS3 isn’t worth an extra $100?”

    That is pretty much what I’m saying.

    Though I would drop twice that on a reliable PS2. I’ve gone through four of the bastards. If the games weren’t so good I wouldn’t even bother.

  35. rider of the short bus Says:
    May 26th, 2008 at 4:20 pm

    I’m considering buying a PS3 to complete my collection (already got a Wii and Xbox 360 and enjoy them both) but if I did get it, it would mostly be for the exclusives. With my income, I don’t think I can reasonably justify dropping that much money for only a few, albeit great, games. The only ones I can remember coming out in the near future are MGS4, LBP, FFXII, Resistance 2, although i would definitely get older ones such as Uncharted and Resistance 1. Any ones that I forgot?

    I didn’t forget Killzone 2, it just looks like a worse playing, better looking version of CoD4.

  36. Ninsonysoft Says:
    May 26th, 2008 at 4:56 pm

    LBP is gonna be fun.. I’m thinking a level made out of walls that are covered with a photo so it looks like nothing is there.

    Also, for anybody who has Warhawk and Resistance 1, is the multiplayer still active? Thanks.

  37. Stickemup Says:
    May 26th, 2008 at 5:06 pm

    @ColdYellow – Hehe, are you one of those gamers that plays everything on extremely hard? Or just when you create your own levels? I would love to check out what you got! I have a friend that loves playing things on hard, he could help me pass the level. I always play everything on ‘Normal’ the first time around.

    @erik – I guess I should accept your answer as true. But it’s hard to. You’ve said so much BS before that I dunno what to belive. You’re what SDF is, but for the 360 and Wii.

    @rider of the short bus – Folklore, Warhawk, Ratchet, GTP, Motorstor, Eye of Judgement and Heavenly Sword. Depending on your tastes. Socom is also coming later this year, if you’re into it.

  38. the_chosen_one Says:
    May 26th, 2008 at 5:17 pm

    i thought it was too good to be true. The frst couple of paragraphs were actually a good review coming from SDF (still crap, just better than normal).

    But then I read this line…

    “Although, I suspect the adolescent Xbot audience could find little use for a game that makes you want to actually interact with friends IRL and create social connections.”

    “IRL”!?! In a review!?!. Guys you really need to find better writers!

  39. @Stickemup

    “You’re what SDF is, but for the 360 and Wii.”

    And PC, and the PS2.

    So yeah, I support multiple systems, and SDF (poorly) supports one. So how exactly can I be like SDF then?

  40. rider of the short bus Says:
    May 26th, 2008 at 5:19 pm

    @Stickmeup
    Haven’t heard of Folklore, Warhawk looked pretty cool, Ratchet isn’t my kinda thing, I thought of Gran Turismo 5 seconds after I hit post, Motorstorm also looks pretty good, and I don’t know enough about Eye of Judgment either. Heavenly Sword I would probably rent before buying to see if I like it. Thanks.

  41. Ninsonysoft Says:

  44. Ninsonysoft Says:
    May 26th, 2008 at 6:45 pm

    @ColdYellow

    I have N+ too, and let me just know this about how hard your levels are: Are they harder then some of the co-op ones? Some of those are extremely frustrating (such as the one where three players are in the box with the mines and zapping enemies and have to perfectly land on the bouncing blocks)

  45. nextgenmexican Says:
    May 27th, 2008 at 11:15 am

    @ anyone who has a PS3: Love hard levels, once made an assault course map on Far Cry: Predator, it was so damn hard lol

    Started with a party of 16 players, they all left out of frustration >:)

    Let me use your PS3 for LBP. Ill make a level so hard youll need a new TV after you’ve lodged your controller through the middle of it

  46. So I’m to allow a semi-skilled xboxer to recklessly dive into current-gen technology! and the only reward I get is a broken TV?

  47. nextgenmexican Says:
    May 27th, 2008 at 12:12 pm

    @paul

    the reward will be ill let you claim it was your own level.

    Im not just a level designer on the xbox. I make my own full RPG’s on my computer, very imaginitive.

    the broken tv will be a negative, so i urge you not to attempt the level yourself Paul.

    would serve you right for forking up £3000 for a TV

  48. nextgenmexican Says:
    May 27th, 2008 at 12:19 pm

    @paul anyways i regular play a PS3, i go round my friends house to finish games with his as he isnt much of a gamer.

    Completed Resistance, Motorstorm. NBA. all on PS3

    i imagine hed need my help with MGS4 too

  49. Actually my TV only cost £2000, but I still don’t want a controller planted in it. And don’t get me started on tough level design, I designed the second level in Pong (you know when the ball starts to speed up?) well that was all me! When I unleash some cunning LBP magic, the mental hospitals are gonna be overflowing.

    @ColdYellow – What are your thoughts on Halo 3? Curious to know :)

  63. 26 minutes? That’s like half as long as the install time of a PS3 game.

  64. Haze must have been so universally bad, that they couldn’t spin it in a positive way.

  65. Stickemup Says:
    May 28th, 2008 at 9:53 am

    @six1s – Umm… yes and no. It’s not universally bad, it’s just an average FPS that fell victim to hype. Had this been released a year ago, it would have received solid 7.5′s, maybe even 8.0′s.

    It’s just unacceptable to release something like Haze after Free Radical promised so much, and after so many delays. I can’t imagine how it would have played if it would have been released in Decemeber.

    Sometimes reviewers will be harsher on games that fall way short of promises, and give a grade that is even lower than they would for another game with less hype. I don’t know if I agree, but I can see why they do it.

    Basically, it’s an okay FPS, if you’re not a FPS aficionado. If you love FPS, you might want to check it out to see if you like it at all. But if you go into it thinking you’re going to play COD4, it’s gonna suck big time.

    Personally, it’s not for me.

    http://blog.800hightech.com/wp-content/uploads/halo-3-pic-16.jpg

    Even though you didn’t ask me, but ColdYellow this, I have had a borderline unhealthy addiction to Halo, one that has stagnated a little bit along with less interest in videogames, and more in…other things. But Halo 3, I think is one excellent example of how a videogame should be made, esspecially a FPS. Easy to share user created content and gametypes that goes beyond simply shooting, and a fairly ok matchmaking system (I actually don’t like it that much myself, i prefer server lists), a replay system, extremely customizable gametypes in matchmaking, and a…fairly….noob friendly interface. Month’s after it’s release I still see plenty of cool map variants and gametypes made.

    In all fairness Halo3 isn’t a bad game at all. I like to play the co-op and MP with people I know cause I can’t stand all the 12 year olds on that game. For $60 you get a fairly good campaign, a robust MP experience, and a pretty decent level editor. Sure it isn’t the greatest FPS but it is better than most other FPS out there and its just a fun game in general.
    Personally I’m a big COD4 person and racing fan as well.

Sure it isn’t the greatest FPS but it is better than most other FPS out there and its just a fun game in general.
    Personally I’m a big COD4 person and racing fan as well.

  80. @ColdYellow & Escape – Cool, I’ve never played Halo 3 myself. I always wondered if the reviews for it were true, nowadays if a website gives a franchise as big as Halo a bad review, they can pretty much be sure of some pretty bad backlash.

    I just wanted a real opinion from a real gamer.

    @Paul – Oh, you’re not obnoxious at all. You’re hilarious.

    “Close! Actually I was thinking about 2 plant pots cunningly balanced on top of a xbox360 MGS4 box set (40 discs)”

    That always makes me laugh. Why do people think it will spread over multiple discs!?! The ONLY reason why the PS3 version has filled 1 BD-ROM disc is the fact that it is uncompressed and some of the textures and stuff are written in time and time again due to the slow blu-ray drive speed. PGR4 held MORE data than MGS4 and still managed to fit on one DVD9 disc… Go figure!

  82. @the_delusional_one
    Are you secretly on my side? PGR4 may be on 1 disc but it’s not as the devs intended it to be (with a choice between night and day racing like PGR3). it’s a good example of blu-ray’s necessity.
    The dead-end DVD9 is just one of the reasons why xboxers are already crying out for a xbox720 while the more awesome and better looking Ps3ers are insisting that this gen is still young.

    I’ve yet to hear anyone “cry out for an Xbox720″. Do you have anything to back this up, or is this another one of your fever dreams from your meth addled mind?

  86. @Keri
    So you agree that Ps3ers are more awesome and better looking? Cuz that was the main point I was hoping to get across.

    Uh…I don’t think that was what he was saying. He was criticizing part of your sentence, and the fact that he didn’t mention the other half doesn’t mean he agrees with it. It’s a bit of a stretch to claim that.You’re trying too hard.

  88. I ain’t trying at all.

    erm… the reason why day night switches were cut was due to there being no endurance races on PGR4. All the developers said was that they were struggling to do it. Not that they couldn’t

    and it still doesn’t negate my post as even without day night switches… there was still more data in PGR4 than there is on MGS4 (if you take out the textures and voices that have been written to the disc multiple times)

    You’ve admitted it several times in the past.

    9/10???? this obviously deserves a 10 their is nothing but 360 fanboys reviewing this game im tired of it, if it were a 360 exclusive i bet it would be a 10!!!! and if the wii tried to play this game it would cause a nuclear reaction

  93. Thanks for writing this review.
