SDF Review: Haze (PS3)
SDF is calling it right now… Haze is the real deal. After having just completed the game, we can safely say that Haze is Free Radical’s best game yet, showing Microsoft how Halo 2.5 and Perfect Dark Zero should’ve been done. A fantastic next-gen shooter that no PS3 owner should be without. With this and upcoming FPS greatness such as Resistance 2 and Killzone 2, there’s no doubt that the PS3 has already established itself as the system of choice for FPS fans.
Set in the year 2048, in a dystopian region of South America ravaged by war, you play the role of Shane Carpenter, a military sergeant working for the world’s leading PMC, Mantel Global Industries. As a Mantel warrior you have the possibility to greatly enhance your senses and fighting abilities by consuming a drug named Nectar, turning you into a ruthless killing machine. Obviously, as you and your comrades are hunting down guerrillas led by the nefarious “Skin Coat”, you progressively realize that all’s not as sound as it initially appears. After a series of ingenious plot twists, Carpenter ends up leading the rebel resistance against Mantel. Haze is a thrill ride filled with some of the best set pieces that the genre has seen in years, awesome campy humor, voice acting and dialogue, and perfectly crafted mechanics that will keep you craving for more.

And the plot twists must be “ingenious” for your little, feeble minds because fighting for one side, finding out that side is evil and then changing to the other side is just plain old. The last great plot twist I was ever subject to was in the original KoToR.
That game was a 10/10 and I can tell you Haze isn’t up to that standard.
Having played this at my friends over the weekend I gotta say this was the biggest pile of shit to date. My friend and I we played about an hour and turned the fucking thing off just because it was “ho-hum”.

Um, I do know one person that has a POS3 (mostly for movies) and he rented Haze. I played with him, and, um, he returned the game after an hour of playing. IT SUCKED!!!! He then rented a movie, which is what the POS3 was designed to do first and foremost!

No Rare DIDN’T become Free Radical at all. Rare was purchased by MS. Before that happened a group of developers for Goldeneye left and formed Free Radical and there first game was Timesplitters which came out shortly after the launch of the PS2 in 2000. Also Haze is a major step back for Free Radical because (the only tolerable game I like from them) is Second Sight. Second Sight had a great story to it and the controls where good as well. So with Haze its just a “WTF” moment for them.

I have to disagree with my fellow SDF editor blu Boy on this one. Haze is certainly better than Halo 3, but it does have some flaws.
Honestly, I finished my second playthrough of MGS4 (my first one being a few weeks ago) and it really makes Haze, Halo 3, and Gears of War look and sound like a complete joke.

after pointing out “few” problems like old graphic engine (lighting, shadows and textures not so improved from the first ninja gaiden), in-game loading time, ai, camera turns, they give it a 8.4. great score. hearing about these issues, should be a 7 in my opinion. but i didnt play the game yet.

@erik – I love how you think you’re making a point, pointing out the cut scenes in MGS4. I don’t know if you understand this, but every MGS before has had a bunch of cut scenes.
It’s a huge part of the game. I enjoy the cut scenes as much as the gameplay.
It’s not for everyone. And I love that. Put it this way, I know some reviewers will give it a 8/10, why? Because they aren’t fans of the series, and the cut scenes only get in the way of the awesome gameplay for them.
But the beautiful thing is that for fans of the series – like myself – it will be one of the greatest games ever made.
I completely respect a review of 8/10 for MGS4, because I understand what type of game it is. MGS4 almost deserves two reviews, one for the fans, and the other for everybody else.

Yes, we agree that Halo 3 was NOT the greatest FPS ever created. It is still a more solid FPS than Haze. I prefer Gears of War, for its tactical cover based gameplay. Yes, I know, I know…SDF claims that Uncharted “revolutionized” gameplay with the cover system that it stole from Gears and other games.(Not bashing Uncharted, it’s a great game and it could do worse than that cover system)

Being both fans of the MGS series, I think we tend to “overlook” its faults but we don’t care because the positives far outweigh the negatives. So when the game gets like a 8/10 from a reviewer (who’s not a fan of the series) its not there “idiots” they got some perspective and can see the games faults and maybe are judging it as a game and not the second coming of christ.
BTW the greatest game ever (for the PS brand) has already been released and its 11 years old and that goes to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
ColdYellow is one of the few reasonable people here, as he seems to understand that not everyone has the same perspective.
Here’s what puzzles me… Ubisoft worked on this game, a PS3 exclusive, which ended up with awful graphics and underwhelming reception. What’s another game they worked on?
Assassin’s Creed, a cross-platform game that graphically surpasses Haze by far. So, for all who say that the Xbox 360 is holding back cross-platform games, think again. Haze is just disappointing.

I also forgot to add this in my previous post; When someone complains about cutscenes I don’t think there complaining about the quality but the length. I for one enjoy some lenghty cutscenes (mainly at the beginning and the end) but when they’re in the middle and getting numerous then it starts getting stupid. I believe that can bring the game down as its taking you (as the player) out of control of the game and leading you to a “on rails” experience that can almost totally kill the game for people. So when someone says that “Metal Gear is a fucking movie not a game” maybe there just fed up with the length and frequent cutscenes and thats not what the think is a game at all. Then again they should have also done some research (or rented) the game in question instead of dropping $60 on a game they think is a movie.

Both the 360 and PS3 are now attempting to render the wii useless baby games console, and I think both with fail horribly. This kind of stuff is almost never as good as the original, and even with better graphics, and even if their games would be better with their own respective motion controlled games, I think the 360 and PS3 will forever be in the minority due to their price tags. By the higher end models of the 360 and PS3(40gig) are at $250, the wii may very well be at 150-200, hell possibly even less. And everyone knows that parents like the cheapest way out for their game hungry teenagers and children.
@ColdYellow – Man I’m the same way. I used to love RPGs, but I’m just too busy with school and my social life to spend that much time on a game.
I can easily give up an hour or two a day to kill some badies in a game, but for some reason, I feel like I’m wasting my time when I’m playing an RPG. Running around leveling up and talking to random NPCs just seems like a waste of time.

Well I’m torn about having another kid because of the economy in michigan, gas, and food prices are making it difficult to support a 3 person family with a house payment and bringing in another kid just makes it finacially streanous. @EscapeTheFate – Awesome man. The DMW system is bad at times, like when it gives you a summoning and all you have left to defeat is one guy with like 20HP left. But it does do a good job of just letting you focus on fighthing, and not on reserving your magic and summons. I just wish the game would realize when you’re fighting someone weak.
Aside from that, it’s a great game. The ending is just…well…you’ll see…so sad…

About the price thing, I dunno, Square is greedy? Like how they could have easily released FF Tactics for $10 on the PSN but chose to sell it for $40 as a UMD, even though it’s a PS1 game.

Why would we get a PS3 praytell? The price of Blu-Ray players has dropped. I’ve seen them for as low as $288. So any reason to buy a PS3 has been chucked right out the window.

Metal Gear Solid 4 basically looks like an interactive movie. Sure, the story would blow competition out of the water, but if they focus mainly on story, why not just make a damn movie? Games are games because they focus on gameplay, and MGS4 gameplay looks kinda repetitive. And in that vid where Kojima plays MGS4 for 10 minutes, why is it that when snake runs, his whole upper body doesn’t move? He looks like a robot.
On another note, and Half-Life 2 Episode 2 spoilers.
The strider gauntlet at the end is extremely annoying. Its a bunch of reloading because you usually have only one shot due to the fact that the Magnusson devices can be all the way across the map.

I believe Eurogamer/Edge gave Halo 1/2 a 7 and 8 respectively, and Halo 1 was definitely a better game than 3.
Also, Eurogamer gave Uncharted a 9 and Gears an 8.

^^^ also according to metacritic the top 10 360 games are above a 90 where’s the PS3 only has 5 above 90.
Face it. Gears of War was the inspiration for Uncharted. Its gameplay is much more fun.

secondly, yes- those aren’t real “exclusives”- i have played Mass Effect, Gears of War, Bioshock (which will be better on PS3- HAHAhAHA) on PC…… for free (torrents)- and they are superior to their respective 360 versions (higher res, extra content, refined controls, mods etc)
and i will play Splinter Cell, Left4Dead, Gears of War 2 and every other so called 360 exclusive (bar Fable 2 and Ninja Gaiden 2- which sucks because they rock) on my PC…… for free…… the superior versions….. without RROD……. and play online for free
how are you going to play Uncharted, Res and Res 2, KZ2, MGS4, FF13, GOW3, Heavenly Sword, Heavy Rain, Eight Days, SOCOM, LBP, White Knight Story, Tekken, WipeoutHD, Motorstorm and MS2, Twisted Metal, R&C and many other without a PS3
and yeah i know- you don’t care about those games- but i know you do….. just ashamed to admit it (i don’t know why, im not ashamed to admit that i want to play Halo 3, Fable 2 and Ninja Gaiden 2)
