It begins: Sony confirms in-game XMB, trophies in 2.4
On Sony’s official blog they just confirmed what’s going to be in their 2.4 (ie XBL killer) update:
A new PLAYSTATION 3 firmware update (v2.36) will be launching soon, improving system stability when playing select PlayStation format software titles. We’re also happy to officially report that the 2.40 system software update for PS3 will include “XMB†access in-game. The update will also include “trophies,†an exciting new feature that we’ll be providing more details on soon, as well as some other new enhancements. We’ve talked about some of this on the blog previously and know that many of you can’t wait to get your hands on these features. You can expect us to share all of the official details shortly.

Yeah, that’s just opting to throw in a bunch of needless, unimaginative features so they can boast about how their system is superior because it has features the other system doesn’t, but are completely unnecessary. I think its great that Sony is improving their online, though.

Anyways, Sony is not copying 360, Sony had this idea before, also PS2 had internet, then Xbox just copy-pasted the idea.

There’s a lot of lag on the dashboard for the Xbox 360.
For instance, when I’m playing a game and I hit the XBL button, the dash takes like 2-3 seconds to open up and you can see the menu lagging when it does so. And then it’s slow moving around all the different sections of the dash.
Can’t wait for in-game XMB, which should trounce any advantage XBL had.

In-game XMB should have been in since day one and Sony knows it. They’ve been promising it in every firmware update they’ve had so far.
As for trophies, they’re basically achievements but you’ll apparently unlock extra items in Sony Home to customise your in-game avatar. Which is cool, if you ever wanted to play Second Life in hi-def.

I dont see any advantage from Live, PSN is exactly the same, but FREE. Also, PSN has compilated information, and Live has too much useless information and a confusing interface that makes you lose time. Sorry, but, Live needs a 100% remaking to be as cool as PSN is.
Sony is delaying the firmware because they need to make PS3 perfect. Remember that on 360 you can get illegal games, and people using CHEATS online, on PS3 that’s impossible, so when you play online, you play with ligit people, not like 360, with laggy games and people using cheats, that destroys the Online gamming. Xboxers are paying to play online with Cheats, I now it’s hard to accept, don’t feel ashamed to cry.
BTW, any new information about RROD people? like, 30% of 360 are DEAD?

Firstly, you obviously haven’t played the 360 is you call the UI bad. I’m not sure if you and Hans are flamebait, but whatever. the UI has all games connected to one another, something that PSN is just now getting. I’ll admit the marketplace can get confusing. But other than that it gets the job done, private chats in the middle of the game simply acessed by the guide button granted you’re not playing a Xbox 1 game. As for Hans saying the dashboard lags, the only lag I can find is when it’s loading your acheivments. RROD is at 16%.
The Phony dumb-bots finally get what we have enjoyed since the 360 came out, in-game XMB and achievements. Unfortunately, as $ony always does, both will be gimped and not really be like our dashboard and the trophies, well, what good is 2-3 trophies for 2-3 games worth owning for the POS3?

The biggest problem with the in game XMB is the amount of memory we developers have to give up. The PS3 has 256M for code. Before your title loads the system takes up a minimum of 48M. If your game wants to load XMB it’s going to cost you more.
The backcompatable scenario isn’t fully fleshed out yet, or at least it hasn’t fully been released to developers. The last I was told, every title that wants to load the XMB will need a title update, and due to poor software sales in the US, many US development houses aren’t planning on bothering.
Hopefully Sony will make it manditory that titles support the XMB, but that will eat away from the already tiny 208M of code space that we developers have. It sure would have been nice if they hadn’t segmented the memory. Oh well.
PS2.5bots are used to installs and updates (they have 5 per week almost) so they wont mind waiting (they waited 18 months for a decent exclusive to arrive).
Gotta love the cheap Trophy rip off, im waiting for them to say they made it first and Achievements were a direct copy.
It’s getting to the point that the PS2.5 is failing everyday. Not long now and the Wiimote ripp off will be announced with Sony declaring that they made that first too.

Take your head out of your ass. Xbox Live is infinitely times better than your shitty PSN. First off, PSN barely has updates and the service is awful. There is no shit to download. How is that better than Xbox Live which offers great service and DLC? Spending only $50 a year just to use Xbox Live is not a big deal. It looks to me that PSN is the one who needs some fixing if it wants to be as superior as Xbox Live. And why is it that PSN takes ideas from Xbox Live (i.e. Trophies)? Maybe it’s because it sucks so much ass that it wants to mimic the already definitive Xbox Live. Even if it improves PSN, what good will it do for Sony? It’s not like anybody will buy a shitty console just to get some achievements on equally mediocre games (i.e. Heavenly Sword and Resistance).
