E3 Preview: Kaz Hirai’s Pink Suit Set to Return for More E3 Domination
SDF has obtained leaked details of the E3 press conferences for every single major first party attending this year’s event. Here’s the rundown of what you can expect at this year’s show which starts next week.
Microsoft:
Microsoft, like Nintendo before them, will copy Sony and come out with their own brand of motion control. The SixAxis revolutionized the gaming world with the motion control phenomenon we’re seeing today and Nintendo has already copied it with their Wii mote controller. Microsoft is next in line to copy Sony, and from what we hear the technology offers nothing new and is very disappointing. Microsoft will focus this year’s E3 on a shift away from hardcore gamers and will attempt to compete in the casual arena. Expect to see a direct copy of Sony’s HOME service in some form or fashion. This is simply a company where “innovation” is nowhere to be found. Expect massive disappointments on the gaming front too as Gears of War 2 looks downgraded compared to the original and Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts leaves us wondering why Rare is still in business. Microsoft may have some new game announcements, however they will all look terrible.
Sony:
Expect to see Sony return to form at E3. They will start the conference off with a bang by detailing the tremendous sales growth of the Playstation franchise in 2008. The Xbox 360 continues to sell in last place in every single region while the Playstation 3 enjoys the first place crown for next generation systems. There will be quite a few magaton announcements, especially regarding a title that we are under strict NDA not to speak about that will amaze everyone. It is simply the best looking title ever. If you thought Killzone 2 made the Xbox 360 look like a Wii, you ain’t seen nothing yet — and no, this title is not God of War III (which will also be revealed and which also looks incredible). Game of the show? Little Big Planet.
Nintendo:
Nintendo will devote much of its time at the conference discussing how the Wii’s sales are nowhere near as good as the Playstation 2. Nintendo is deeply entrenched in the last-generation race against Sony’s 100+ million juggernaut. Unfortunately for them, the Wii still has 80+ million consoles to sell before they can come close to overtaking Sony. Luckily, this will never happen due to the Wii’s lackluster ongoing sales. Expect Nintendo to focus more on low-IQ gaming; shifting resources away from hardcore franchises and more into peripherals and games that soccer moms and young children can only enjoy because they don’t understand the concept of buttons.

Sony:
Expect to see Sony continue it’s lack-luster form at E3. They will start the conference off with a whimper by detailing the horrendous sales of the POS3 in 2008 and the badly QA’s 2.40 downgrade. The Xbox 360 continues to sell 10 to 1 in every single region while the Playstation 3 enjoys the last place crown for next generation systems. There will be quite a few boring announcements, especially regarding a title that we are not under strict NDA (since we have no journalistic abilities and no relationship what-so-ever to $ony) not to speak about that will bore everyone. It is simply the worst looking title ever. Actually the Wii was released 9/14/06 and the PS3 was released 11/17/06. And Nintendo started work on the wiimotes in 2001.

Expect to see alot of lost exclusives, and Kaz Hirai shame himself. He will downplay all of the advantages of the competition, and try to put a positive spin on all of Sony’s fuck ups. It will be a no show for the very games that were supposed to make 2008 “Year of the PS3″. After the meager presentation, be prepared to see Kaz crying to himself as he lay in the floor of the stage in the fetal position. He will then come out of the closet, after which George Takei will have him killed for giving Asian fags a bad nam!
So I’m guessing you didn’t see the Gears of War 2 gameplay videos? GoW 2 already looks graphically superior to its predecessor and there are tons of new features. The multiplayer in GoW 1 was great, but it looks even better in GoW 2. Need proof? Look below.

Really? Too Human looks awesome and so does Gears of War 2. If Mass Effect 2 is in the making then I have no doubts for that game. Microsoft also announced another Halo game that is yet to be unveiled. I have high expectations (and anticipation) for this new Halo game. I’m also excited about Banjo Kazooie 3 since I was such a huge fan of those games when I was playing the N64 back then.
Microsoft: will demonstrate hands-on Gears of War 2, which will show a direct contrast to the (barely) interactive CG movie that is MGS4. All journalists present will be amazed except for the clowns at SDF since they won’t be there because they are not, in fact, journalists.
Nintendo: will not say too much, will probably talk about their “Blue Ocean” strategy, will allude to a new in-house IP. SDF will make disparaging remarks about this new IP, even after it is released and eclipses anything done by Sony, both in review scores and sales.
Sony: will, as usual, pretend all is roses, will blatantly lie about how much they love their customer base, will announce another PoS3 price drop (conveniently neglecting to mention that even MORE functionality has been removed, will show a few 1080p CG movies, claiming they are “In Game” scenes, and will finish up by promising that if everyone in North America buys a PS3, cancer will be cured by Christmas.

The Wiimore predated the Sixaxis. Furthermore the suckatude of the Sixaxis was so tremendous it caused Sony to release the DualShock 3 to replace it.

I totally agree that Blizzard is an influential company. Just look at all their massively successful franchises. Let’s not forget about Diablo 2. The Guinness World Records even noted Diablo 2 as being the fastest selling computer game ever in history.

Okay 2 things about that motion sensing controller, one, Sony didn’t invent motion sensing controllers, it was Nintendo, back in 1986 (or sometime around then) that invented it with the power glove, sure might not have been as good as SixAxis, but it was avalible LONG before Sony was making video game consoles. Also, Microsoft isn’t making the motion sensing controller, that is a third party making it. I do agree with you on the part about Rare though, the original Banjoo Kazooie games where great, and this one looks like crap.

Okay, I agree that Kaz will say on stage that PS3 has been selling well since the release of Metal Gear Solid 4, but I HIGHLY doubt that they will even talk about there competitors, Kaz is a smart, nice man, and I highly doubt he will make fun of other companys on stage, that is something Steve Jobs already does. I agree that Garrys Mod- sorry, Little Big Planet, will be there big thing at the show, but I also think GoW 3 will be HUGE since that is one of there best selling series on the PS2 and a great game on the PSP. Yeah, while LBP does look like a lot of fun, I hardly think that it is fair to call it a revolutionary, innovative, original game. Hell, most PC games come with the developer toolkit which gives free range for user-created content. And, like noted before, Garry’s Mod is INCREDIBLY similar to LBP. It’s not like user-created levels and content is a new thing.

Ah, I see… Miamoto went forward in time to the release of the PS3 to copy the PS3′s sixaxis motion controls, then put the identical technology into the Wii’s controller.
If the sixaxis technology had been used for the Wii, it would have been a useless piece of garbage. The PS3′s sixaxis is only good for gestures, it’s not based on an IR camera like the Wii.

I CAN afford to buy all three consoles. I just have this simple rule -
Does the console have 10 exclusives I want to play, compared to it’s direct competitors (thus excluding PC)? Then I’m in. Currently PS3 for me has Folklore and potential LBP, new Jak and new Shin Megami Tensei games. But most of it is “in potentia”. So until the war is over OR ten games I’m interested in are released I won’t spend my money on it.

Although you are right that the 360 was out 18 months before the PS3. Within it’s first year, it still had over 10 exclusives, on top of all the other games released. The PS3 is bearly hitting 10 games still at the mo. The PS3 would be hard streched to have 5 games worth having, let alone 10 exclusives.

In my opinion, the PS3 has had a while to start releasing some nice exclusive titles. I’m not interested in buying a PS3 just to play just one nice exclusive game ( i.e. MGS4). If there are at least 10 really good exclusives on the PS3 then I will consider buying one. Right now, MGS4 is the only game that really catches my eye. I’m still looking forward to Resistance 2 and Killzone 2. I’m just not ready yet to buy a PS3. If this “war” is over and the PS3 doesn’t have enough exclusives then there is no point in buying it. (This is entirely my view. Don’t take it the wrong way. I do not hate the PS3.)

It just gets old, you can compare the first year line-up for both systems, and they are not that different.
And to be honest, you can’t fairly compare them. Because you will want to count all those third-party exclusives that the 360 had, that wouldn’t have been if they PS3 was around. They had completely different first years. One had no competition, and the other one had A LOT of competition.
I know you’re going to say you’re not interested in playing Uncharted, Resistance, Folklore, Future Tools, Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm, EOJ or Warhawk, but you also can’t say it didn’t have good exclusives.
I know you’re going to say no, but if those games would have been on the 360, a lot of you, if not all of you would have played them.
It’s that thing where fanboys see the other companies exclusives as boring. I don’t think they realize they do it, it just happens.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again though, one of the things I like about the Sony exclusives is that they are truly exclusives. You wont see people playing Uncharted or Resistance on PC.
I can go out and buy Gears, Mass Effect and Bioshock and play them on my PC. I just choose not to because I’ve never liked a mouse in my hand when I’m playing. (crazy huh?)
As it happens ive played 90% of the PS3 exclusives u posted up, the only ones that really got my attention was Heavenly Sword (i quite enjoyed it), and Uncharted (but i much prefer tomb raider to it tbh). The others were so-so.
Although im more for the 360 as it’s a better games machine, i wouldnt all myself a fanboy cause ive owned them all except a PS3. The only reason i dont own a PS3 is because of the games.
The PS1 got it right witht eh games, the PS2 did too. The Xbox got it right, and the 360 did as well. But the PS3 is so far behind, theres nothing that makes a gamer want to go out and get one like they did with the PS1/PS2. Until that day arrives where the PS3 has enough features and games to warrent a purchase i’m still not buying into it. I see it as a flop compared tot he other 2 playstations.
TBH, i can see Sony admitting they flopped witht he PS3 further downt he line, Xbox Pheonix (next gen 360) has been announced at E3 and dev’s are making games for it, so the PS3 maybe a little too late with nothing to stand it apart from the others for a gamer.

There is a flaw in your logic – Dreamcast got a two years head-start and I think Genesis got around these numbers as well. But both PS2 and SNES upped them just in one year with a big list of really good exclusives. 2000/2001 for PS2 were a LOT better then 2006/2007/2008 for PS3.
Of course we MIGHT get something better for PS3 by the time of Christmas, but I highly doubt it. Considering first-second-party exclusive titles are looking rather bleak – Final Fantasy with bombed reputation due to XII and Killzone 2/Resistance 2 which for a lot of players won’t be console-sellers due to high number of FPSes on 360.
At this rate only GoW III and SCIV (because Darth is cooler than Yoda for some. Although he might become downloadable.) are looking promising. I fear Christmas sales won’t show anything spectacular.
Oh, and most projects might be pushed to 2009, due to console’s curse of delays. Make your own conclusions…

Resistance2 will sell zero systems. Not a single one. Everyone who buys R2 will do so because they had R:fom, and they obviously have a ps3 already.
kz2: everyone hypes this game, but frankly if you have ever played kz1 or liberation you will stay clear of this disaster of a game. Even halo3 is better and that game got a 2.5 on this very site.
Damn moderation land. I said that R2 will only be bought by R1 owners in effect selling not a single console. KZ2 is worse than h3 which got 2.5 here.
Street Fighter 4 and Pro Evo 09 will be the deciding factor come christmas. The console who offers better gameplay and better online support will sell the most this christmas.

Not really… Sport games are barely major console-sellers, and considering that Soul Calibur II was pretty hot at the time and while Gamecube version was technically better it still didn’t manage to push consoles. So there ya have it.
Soul Calibur and Street Fighter are in 2 different leagues. Thats like comparing Super Mario to an avarage platformer.
Streetfighter 4 is a gurenteed console seller. Exactly the same as when Streetfighter 2 was released on the SNES, SNES sales rocketted.

Plus it’s a side scrolling world that has so many different things that Garry’s Mod doesn’t have. I’m not saying it has more, because I have never used Garry’s Mod, just seen people use it, but the things in LBP are completely different.
I can’t freakin wait to be with 3 of my buddies, playing my sick ass levels. Co-op!
And scanning things with the PSEye and putting them right into the games. It’s going to be incredible.
(I also think a lot of the people who are quick to comment on LBP are ignorant to what you can do in the game, there has been a lot of stuff revealed that the average PS3 fan doesn’t even know about)
It’s like comparing the platform aspects of Uncharted to those of a Mario game. Yes they are under the same umbrella, but are so different, and each appeal to different people.
I think LBP is going to appeal more than any mod/game creating game before it.
They managed to make an extremely cute but cool mascot that just screams “The Next Big Thing”

LBP – Well, again, kid games barely sold any console, even party games. Wii did pull out this gimmick, by ORIENTING on it. For every “games are cool and art” there are ten macho-crazy fuckers, who won’t buy anything with rating less then “T”. Yes, I’m serious. I think LBP, while being one of the rare wickedly cool games on PS3 will barely push consoles.
SF4 – Again, I doubt it. For every guy who buys it from pure nostalgia there are a lot of others wo are simply not interested in fighting games. Believe me, even 3D ones are somewhat a dying genre. Did KOF: Maximum Impact sell? Remember Street Fighter: EX? Don’t set your hopes too high.

Get Ninja Gaiden Black for the Xbox if you want to play NG Sigma. They are the same game, and NG Black can be bought for a fraction of the price.

I work with a guy that owns a PS3 and told him about LBP and he won’t have anything to do with it at all. Even showed him screen shots but since it looks “kiddie” he doesn’t want it. He does admit that the concept of it is cool but he won’t buy it just simply because it looks like a kids game (I on the other hand would buy it in a heartbeat).
You gotta remember no matter how cool of a concept a game might have, there are people who will not buy a game just on the principle of how a game looks.
BTW Worms is still the shit to this day and those games still crack me up.

Alot of factors are going against R2 online MP; maps, players, weapons, glitching, matchmaking, and most importantly balancing. About Resistance 2′s 60 player online, you really can’t just throw that fact out there as a raw positive for the game. 60 player online is not necessarily a good thing. More=/=better. Gears 2′s tight, fast-paced 5 on 5 could be way better than a 60player “clusterfuck.” But if Resistance 2 pulls it off, then it might be better than Gears.
there’s must be some serious lag issues if Resistance 2 is going to have 60 players. The PS3 lags like fuck now with the likes of COD4 and Bad Company, so only god knows how laggy it’s going to be with 60 people playing at once.
The PS3 lags with CoD4 and Bad Company because those games are multiplatform titles that are designed with p2p in mind for the lowest common denominator (Xbox Live’s terrible p2p service). So it plays laggy like a typical Xbox Lag game.
Resistance 2, on the other hand, features dedicated servers like Resistance 1 which means that there’s zero lag. Resistance 1 boasted of 32+ players and there was never any lag.
And the PC has boasted 60+ player games with zero lag for years. The consoles are barely managing to incorporate even these rudimentary elements into their games.

60 players is impressive for a console game, but it will be total letdown if it lags like shit.
Let’s not forget one thing. You don’t need tons of players just to have an epic multiplayer experience. I remember Gears of War was only 4v4 and yet it is still enjoyable. Sometimes games can be a lot more fun if there are less players in multiplayer. Sometimes it goes the other way around. If Resistance 2 offers plenty of multiplayer game modes, balance, variety, and new features then it will be a great multiplayer experience. It’s good that they offer us 60 player games, but they should also offer us games 2 man co-op tactical rather than mindless 30v30 deathmatch. As long as the game isn’t going to be a lag fest then Resistance 2 will be great.

I own Bad Company on the 360 and surprising enough the online has never lagged once since I bought it. Now if I remember correctly you play it on EA servers as well and not p2p.
So your BS reason for laggie multi-platform games is utter crap as well.
BTW only select games on the PS3 get dedicated servers (R1 and R2) but the others are all p2p and if it sucks then it also is fault of the network code for the games for that console.

I just played through the Too Human demo, and the game is actually incredibly fun. I would give it a solid 8.5 based on the demo. The combat is actually very satisfying. It’s easy to get into, but deep enough to make for a very fun experience. Online co-op should be a blast.

Those exclusives you mention don’t really appeal to me. I have my eyes on Resistance 2 and Killzone 2. My only worries for Killzone 2 is the AI. The AI didn’t look that intelligent from their gameplay videos.
Resistance 2 looks like Battlefield 2 but not as fun. Killzone 2 looks like a watered down CoD4 clone, and the new gameplay video they released looks nothing like the 2005 CGIfest.

That maybe true. I don’t think that many PS3 games had as much hype as Halo 3 so it really didn’t boost the sales the way that Halo 3 did for the Xbox 360. MGS4 may have done it for the PS3, but nowhere near what Halo 3 did. Not saying that these exclusives suck. Sony’s exclusives aren’t awful (except for Lair and Haze) but they are so obscure compared to Halo 3.

They needed more games announcments to really cement themselves as this years winners.

If the 2008/2009 exclusives for the PS3 do not live up to everybody’s expectations then Sony is finished for this generation. We only have about 2-3 years until the Xbox 720 is released. That will start an entirely new generation.

The only reason that a large proportion of “exclusive” 360 games are ported to the PC is because……..Microsoft IS PC
