He not only plays video games, he watches every show about them on G4, he participates in chat rooms about them on the internet, he competes in a variety of games on a variety of platforms. He always tells me the latest trend three months before I read about it in the media.
But he’s never been a PlayStation fan. Sure, he had a PS1, but as soon as the Xbox came out, it was game over. He loved the Xbox graphics, and once he was old enough to play “Halo,†he loved the games. He graduated to the Xbox 360, Xbox Live, “Gears of War,†etc. He even hung in there during the overheating Xbox “red ring of death†phase. Other than a two-year detour/obsession playing “World of Warcraft†on his computer, he has always been an Xbox fanboy. Sony just didn’t have great games.
Last week he recorded all of G4’s E3 coverage so he could watch it after work (he’s got a summer job to save money to buy gas and videogames, in that order). He was very excited after Microsoft had its news conference. “You can stream Netflix movies onto the Xbox 360!†he exclaimed.
Then he watched the Sony press conference, and the world as we know it changed. After hearing about “Metal Gear Solid 4â€, as well as other PlayStation exclusives in the pipeline and the awesomeness of Blu-ray, he promptly packed up his Xbox 360 and all his games and went down to Game Stop to trade them in. He bought a PS3 and “Metal Gear Solid 4.†I had to be there to approve the purchase of the M-rated game since he’s not yet 17, and I was surprised at how rapturous the Game Stop employees were about Sony. They then sold him a USED copy of “Metal Gear Solid 4.†“How can the game already be used?†my son asked. “Because some people get frustrated if they don’t have ‘cheats’,†he was told. But the cashier assured him that the game “was just as good as new.†My son asked, “How can that be?†“Because PlayStation players are ninjas!†was the response.
I’m happy to say my son didn’t accept this answer. Perhaps that’s because he’s now spending his own hard-earned money to purchase these games. He said, “Seriously, how does that work?†And the Game Stop fanboys explained that Sony now has a special coating on Blu-ray game discs which makes them virtually scratch-proof. We shall see.
One thing we do know. We may not be able to stream Netflix movies onto the console (yet) but now we can start ordering them on Blu-ray.
As we left the store, I said to him, “I never thought I’d see you with a PlayStation.†“Neither did I,†he replied.

I feel like I’m trapped in the Twilight Zone where you can’t advance the plot forward and your stuck in an infinite loops of beginning.
An elderly friend of the family made the move to high-def and blu-ray rececntly, and he got a PS3 in lieu of a standalone blu-ray player.
So it’s at LEAST true that people are buying the console for the blu-ray functionality.
I feel really bad for this kid, y’know. He’s experience the greatness of X-Box Live, so he’ll be more than dissapointed to see that the Playstation Network completely fails.

Forgive me if I’m wrong here NextGenUser, but I seem to be getting the impression that I’m apparently very thick for buying an XBox 360, and also that I am cheating on Halo 2.5? For starters, I’m not thick. If you can think of a good way for me to prove that to you, go right ahead.
Secondly, as far as I’m aware I’m not cheating on Halo 2.5, both because I’m simply not cheating, and because as far as I’m aware, I don’t own Halo 2.5 Maybe if it existed I would, but as such a game is entirely fictional I strongly doubt it’s possible for me to be cheating on it.
However, I do recall being accused of cheating on the GRID demo I downloaded a while back, thanks to my 1m 40s laps on the San Fransisco track. The only real reason I can see for you accusing all 360′ers of cheating is simply because you played against one a while back and they kicked your sorry arse. Thus you came to the conclusion that nobody could possibly defeat you and your l337-PS3-skillz, and therefore were cheating. They weren’t cheating, you were just failing because you were attempting to lean out from cover by tilting the controller. Doesn’t work on the 360 mate…
Before I get labelled a 360 fanboy though, I’d just like to say this: Motorstorm is a good bit of fun, and Resistance is a decent game (very fun multiplayer when you get some mates round). However, all else fails gloriously when compared to the mighty PC. Of which I am a fanboy.

Nextgenuser, you just basically showed not only how ignorant you are but most of the $ony fanboy fembots here! You like to point out 360 weaknesses, but what about the POS3? Well, let’s see… a majority of people have one for a cheaper blu-ray player, the online pales in comaprison to XBL (and everyone knows it), the games library has been lack-luster (even after almost 2 years) and the only title anyone talks about is LBP (including myself). Also, it is well known that the optical drive in the POS3 have had many issues (with POS3 being sent back for repair). Don’t believe me, check on ebay and call Sony Support. Why do I know this?
Well, I’ll tell you. I have had a POS3 since it launched (actually, on my third POS3, 60 gig non-gimped version that can play PS2 games) and I have three games for it: Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank played the most, MGS4 about 2 hours, got bored with it.

Out of the three:
360 – 80% of the gameplay
Wii – 15%
POS3 – 5% (however, this is my movie player)
I have had three 360s and three POS3s since launch. POS3 has no games, the 360 has all of them.
Am I a 360 fanboy? Hell Yes! Why, because I have all three and I know which one is the best – 360. It has the best games and the best online.
xbox360FTW: I have both a 360 and a wii. I like the wii more as a console, but the 360 has more games, hence I play the 360 more. I just wish there were more games to buy for the wii (mostly VC atm)
But the wiimote is just the best thing in videogaming today. We really need the same amount of good games as the 360 and I wouldn’t touch my xbox anymore.
I don’t have a ps2.5, I don’t see what kind of added value it’d give me.

Well, Gamespot gave more favorable reviews towards the 360 games and less favorable reviews towards the PS3 games. One example is this: The Orange Box on the 360 got a higher score than the PS3 version. I wouldn’t say that they are biased though. MGS4 got a perfect score from Gamespot. This article is false on every level. I don’t know any press companies that are biased towards the 360 or PS3 (with the exception of the magazines run by MS or Sony). Gamespot is definitely not biased IMO. They gave plenty of good reviews towards a lot of games made by Sony (i.e. God of War). They are even doing more previews and hands-ons with KZ 2 and LBP.

On MGS4, it was a disappointment to me. WAY too much cutscene/CGI crap. Guess this is why they need Flu-ray! I hope that when it comes over to the 360, they cut the CGI crap out and I think it would be a better game (less interuptions)! Use the engine for minimal cutscenes. Halo did this to perfection!

As a POS3 owner, I basically bought a blue-ray movie player for $600 (now on my third because of the crappy build quality of the optical drive). The online is no where near XBL, sorry. Having used both for over a year, XBL is still the hands down winner. Sony was never good at the UI. PSN shows it.

They showed off new products.
Microsoft didn’t reveal anything.
Also, Sony had a better show floor presence with KZ2, LBP, and R2; not to mention all of the PSN titles as well like Flower, Fat princess, etc.

if anything neither MS or Sony showed anything that was “OMG megaton” announcments. The only big moment was the FF13 coming to 360 and thats about it. Otherwise it was “already seen it, now gimme”.
I do admit the PSN does have more enticing games than XBLA on the show floor, but really “new” products did they show?

It will be nice to play say… God of War 4. Though its a shame that Metal Gear Solid had to go out with the PS3. It is really a shame that I will never be able to complete the series.

Fail; because you can do this on both systems, and likely easier with the PS3 because it is actually easier to mod its firmware. Don’t bullshit me about it isn’t, because it is.
I owned a PS3 before selling it and getting a dedicated blu-ray player (a sexy samsung one), and I can assure you, it was just slightly more difficult than modding an original Xbox, which was amoungst one of the easiest things to do, ever.
The 360 is a fair amount more difficult to mod.

Last time I checked, 333MHz is the speed that my TomTom satnav uses, and 2000MHz is the speed that (I think) my ancient (now binned), 4 year old PC ran at.
Also, you mention that your PS3′s ram is 7 times faster. 7 times faster than what; you didn’t specify what you are comparing it to. For all I know, you could be comparing it to a 20 year old computer. And I’m fairly sure that any fairly recent system could be in excess of 7 times faster than that.
So when you put it like that I suppose there is no competition.

Intelligence doesn’t mean anything if you don’t job which takes advantage of this intelligence. The only way you could (theoretically) be rich without working would be if you had retired, inherited vast sums of money, or had just won the lottery, or perhaps just received an insurance payout (a la the Mrs. Darwin case in England).
Strangely, I’m an ‘Xboxer’, and I’m self employed. I design websites for a living. I own my own house. I have a wonderful, beautiful girlfriend (something you will never have), and I make around £40,000 a year. And I work part time.

I’d like to buy a ps3, but not new. I refuse to give sony +1 on their sales numbers. But a ps3 without warranty is pretty much fail too. Considered how the ps2′s started breaking after some time, I expect reports of rising failrates for the ps3 in the near future.

Just like how you’re so stuck on “thinking” you’re not going to enjoy Uncharted, when that game is awesome from beginning to end, and to respond to a comment from the last thread, of course the story isn’t freakin MGS4 or GoW, but that’s the point of it. The characters are what make the story shine. Drake is such a likeable character, and everyone else fits in perfectly. Plus like I’ve said before, the twist at the end is awesome, you have NO IDEA.

I personally can’t wait to play Uncharted possibly next weekend. I liked Tomb Raider and Gears and always enjoyed Naughty Dog games, so my theory is this; why the hell not. I’m aware of the problems with the gamem but that won’t detract me from playing it.

But I have been thinking and I’ve decided to reevaluate my stand on the PS3. Previously I decided that I would never under any circumstances play a PS3. Well I’ve done some unpleasant things in my life. Such as a month I spent in a job as a telemarketer. That was sheer hell and a part of my life I would prefer to forget. Now at that job I got payed roughly $10 an hour. Now if I could get payed say… $12 an hour I just might play the PS3. I really can’t imagine it being too much worse than telemarketing.
Whatever the outcome of this war, $ony has lost by default. They’ll never going to break ps2 records with the ps3 and microsoft and nintendo have swallowed a large chunk of their user base, installed base, fanboys and exclusives. By sales numbers, yes the PS3 has lost by default in N.A, but yet we all gain as gamers. The market today can sustain 3 seperate and unique consoles that all offer different things to everyone.
Look back 15-20 years ago, there was only 2 home consoles out vying for our dollar, then along came sony and ended up changing the game with the PS1. Fast forward to 2001 with the launch of the xbox (mind you that halo did sustain that console and is one of the main reasons it the brand is still here today) and then there was a 3 way battle going on for our dollar yet again.
Now look at today; 3 consoles, 3 different experiences, and many reasons its good to be a gamer today.

Actually, it can. Dev’s can choose to use Xbox Live as they wish. If they want to, they can use it only for tracking players and matching players, using their own servers for multiplayer (and Test Drive Unlimited springs to mind here, which had fucktons of people online during its glory days.)

I just played MGS4 for the first time yesterday, and my main problem with the game was the length of the cutscenes. I would be fine with them, even if they were long, but they take forever to say nothing. They don’t need such long cutscenes to do the story. They could have easily cut out superfluous dialogue and made each cutscene half as long.

Blu-Ray- debatable form of gaming media, but did “win” the HD movie format “war”.
Cell- archeticture making it hard for devs to develop for, but it is almost like the xenon processor found in the 360 and could be the next “thing” (thats if it catches on).
Wi-fi- MS has a wi-fi adapter and it seems to be catching on as well (coffee shops, restaurants, and generally kinda nice not having a shit ton of wires all over the place)
Six-axis- tacked on imo, but implemented right (like the wiimote) it could be used cleverly.
HDMI output- SD or HD, SD is great and all, but when you buy a HD set (HDMI outs) its nice to know its there. I did hear there is a step up though coming down the pipeline.
How is sony going to “steal” you money unless you buy there product. If you buy it then you got a right to bitch, but if you don’t then why even begin to bitch about it.
BTW at least I can be fair and knowledgeable what I’m talking about, and not hold a personal vendetta against a company(s) that I’m in no way associated with. Let’s get one thing straight. Fanboys are stupid. We all know that. But you’ve got to admit that the gaming industry wouldn’t be as fun without those mindless and idiotic failures of human beings. As for the PS3: buy it to play games. Don’t buy it to watch movies. That’s my opinion. It’s a gaming console. It should live up to its name. I own a 360 and I never use it to watch movies or listen to music. I leave that job to my DVD player. Same goes with the PS3. If you already have a Blu-ray disc player at your house then what is the point of buying a PS3 just to play Blu-ray movies?
At one point, I’m ashamed to say, I was thinking about buying a PS3. But at that point the PS3 was one of the cheapest Blu-Ray players around. With the influx of afordable Blu-Ray players I no longer had a reason to even consider buying a PS3.
But it would be a lark though. Having a PS3 but no games. Then when someone comes over and ask what games you have and just look at them blankly and tell them none.

Anyway, the fact is that the PS3 has beat the 360 in North America. The 360 is done with. It’s over. The PS3 is outselling the 360 despite costing 400-500 while the 360 costs 270-350. LTD aren’t relevent unless you’re looking at it in terms of comparative sales since launch; the 360, at the same point in its lifespan as the PS3, has been OUTSOLD by the PS3. The year’s head start is irrelevant because the PS3 will be on the market longer than the 360.
Oh, and the PS3 is the best blu-ray player on the market. I own a few PS3s strictly as Blu-Ray players and haven’t even bothered with standalone blu-ray players because they’re over priced and inferior to the PS3. PS3 is a much better deal and I don’t have to worry about another box cluttering up my entertainment cabinet.

While console sales do matter, your missing the bigger point; software sales. Look at the Wii, it continues to outsell the ps3 and 360 month after month, but not many people are buying games for it.
Just remember hardware sales are great and all (and most people can only afford to purchase just one 360, wii, or ps3), but in the end what do most people remember the PS2 for? I will answer it for you, games.

I’m not associated with Sony eh? I’ve spent a lot of money with them since the PS1 and PS2. Especially when you consider just how many of those unreliable PS2s I’ve bought. During those years I did not own a Nintendo OR Microsoft system at all. And what do I get for my loyalty? The slap in the face that is the PS3.
As you may or may not know, the new 360 dashboard has been leaked onto the net, which can be installed onto a 360 with a low FW or infectus chip. Not only is it a new OS for the 360 rather than a gay update like the PS3 has, but the best bit is with the new dashboard you can copy the FULL game onto the HDD, and as a result, the hackers have also figured out how to run a PS3 emu on it, with the games running 9% faster than the actual PS3.

Why are you so fixed up on the PS3′s hardware? Haven’t you figured it out already? It’s not the console’s hardware that makes it a winner. It’s the games that it has to offer combined with how fun they are. Most companies brag about how amazing and superior their console is just because of some advanced processor or GPU. It doesn’t work that way. A technically superior console usually never wins. Look what happened with the Sega Genesis. Sega thought that the console war was in their hands just because of blast processing. Blast processing failed for Sega and they lost to Nintendo that war. Now the PS3 has cell processing and blu-ray, but it is still behind in sales. Not saying that the PS3 is doing terrible. It’s not doing terrible, but not spectacularly. My point is that a technically superior console can never be automatically declared to be better than any other console on the market. If the console offers great games (possibly combined with great multiplayer) then it is definitely the better console.

‘Bloated’? Sorry, I actually use those features. I use wifi. I use the hard drive extensively for downloadable PSN titles, movies, and music. I use the free online play. I use HDMI for my HDTV. I use Blu-Ray for my Blu-Ray movies.
PS3 is the best value machine/console I’ve ever purchased and is way better than the Playstation 2. I thought the Xbox 1 was pretty progressive with its standard hard drive, but they took a huge step back when they introduced multiple SKUs with the 360 and charged for p2p.

And the PS3 has a great lineup of games. Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted, Ratchet and Clank, Call of Duty 4, Assasin’s Creed, Devil May Cry 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, MotorStorm, Resistance, PixelJunk Monsters, Superstardust HD, PixelJunk Eden, etc.
Not to mention the lineup of games coming in the next few months with Resistance 2, MotorStorm 2, Little Big Planet, Flower, Fat Princess, Killzone 2, and Resident Evil 5.
Your comment about technical superiority equating to being the winner is an argument I never made. There are cases where the most advanced console won, and there are cases where it didn’t. In the end it’s not a huge issue in terms of sales overall, but as a hardcore gamer it is important to me.

The games on the PS2 didn’t hit their stride until years into its lifecycle. Currently, if you compare the first year and a half of the PS3 versus the first year and a half with the PS2, the PS3 clearly wins on games.

I too invested a shit ton of money into the PS1 and PS2, but does that make me associated with them? No. Unless you personally invested money (a shareholder) they don’t “owe” you or me anything. The PS2 was only popular just because of all the amazing games it offered us. It was not as powerful as the Gamecube or the Xbox, but it still won.
Those exclusive games you mentioned are not even highly anticipated (with the exception of LBP, Motorstorm, KZ2, and Resistance 2). Do you think that the whole world will buy a PS3 just to play a game like Flower, Fat Princess, and Superstardust? All the other games are 3rd party games. 3rd party games barely boost the sales of a console. I’m gonna have to disagree with you on how the PS3 wins on games. The entire library is nowhere near as large as the Xbox 360 library, but that doesn’t mean the games are horrible. Uncharted and MGS4 are examples of great games on the PS3. But why buy a console just to play 1 or 2 good games on it? That’s why I think it’s better waiting until the PS3 brings its big guns in. I agree that the PS3 was a bit slow on releasing their games, but it still has time to rise back up.

2001 was a great year (and didn’t let up) with the games for the PS2 and it didn’t take years for it to reach its “stride”.
I recall buying THPS3, DMC, GTA3, FF10, MGS2, StarWars:Starfighter, Dave Mirra BMX2, Red Faction, ZOE, and quite a few others I missed.
So to say the PS3 had a better 1 1/2 years is total fanboy BS, the PS2 definitly had a better first 18 months.
BTW if someone doesn’t want a PS3, that doesn’t make them a “bitter poor”, it just means they don’t want to buy it or don’t see the need to buy it. Cya online sometime and be prepared to get your ass handed to ya.

Where are all the great 360 games this holiday season?
All I see from the 360 is Gears of War 2.
Meanwhile, PS3 has Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, MotorStorm 2, and a bunch of third party titles.
There also aren’t that many good 360 games if you get rid of the multiplatform titles. There’s Gears 1, maybe Halo 2.5D, and that’s about it.

Sigh… Maybe. Oh well, I’ll give it a chance next year, or so, when I’ll come around to buying PS3. Although the only other game right now that I REALLY want to play, not just simply want is Folklore.
By the way, want to bring that out. I work in a warehouse of a huge Russian media-store chain and yesterday we’ve recieved a return of 120 or so console games. Among them – 1 for the 360, 1 for the Wii, 20-30 or so for the PS3 and 50/50 PS2/PSP. Honestly.
Among the PS3 ones were Warhawk and MGS4 even. All in mint condition, so the only possible answer is no one was buying them.
I know it’s not saying much, but that’s just weird… Even I felt this was bad.
Point to note – most Russian gamers are PC-oriented, but console ones gravitate towards Nintendo/Sony. So much more questions arise because of that…

Fable 2, Banjo and Kazooie, Left 4 Dead, Gears 2, Project Origin (multi), Too Human (little before the shopping season), and thats all I can think of from the top of my head.
Fable 2 isn’t a good game. The original one was pretty bad.
Banjo could be good, could be bad. That’s up in the air really. They’re changing the series dramatically.
Left 4 Dead is better on the PC.
Too Human is one of the worst games I’ve ever played.

You’re wrong about Fable. Fable was a great RPG, but it was short. That’s the main problem with it. Fable 2 looks even better than Fable. It’s very ignorant of you to criticize Fable 2 just because of it’s predecessor. I don’t see anybody here saying that Killzone 2 sucks just because Killzone was a disappointment. On top of that, Fable 2 didn’t even come out yet. There are also no demos so you cannot criticize it. And you’re obviously going to say that Too Human is one of the worst games you played just because it’s on the 360. You don’t even own a 360.

Too Human is similar to Diablo, and if you look at it from that perspective it is very good.
Banjo is also very innovative, 40$ seems like it’s a must buy.
Gears 2 is a powerhouse.
Left4Dead is going to be a very good single-player experience, and if you buy it for PC you are still supporting Microsoft anyway…

Halo 3 was a good game. It wasn’t as good as Bungie promised, but it was still great.
Matchmaking was its redeeming feature.
Too Human actually is pretty fun, judging from the demo. It’s an improvement on D2 if they can get the loot stuff right, and seems like it would be great with coop.
Fable 2 looks like its shaping up to be an amazing game.

Don’t judge LBP by its look. My brother is doing that with StarCraft ll, hating it because of its graphics. You should see some of the gameplay demos, it looks great.
I know I’m going to buy LBP, RFOM2, maybe rent KZ2, Fable 2, rent Too Human, etc.
After seeing gameplay videos of LittleBigPlanet, I can honestly say I am stoked. Games that let you have so much creativity, like Garry’s Mod, thrill me.
I enjoyed Resistance 1, and Resistance 2 is looking to be able live up to its hype.
I’m still reserving feelings on KillZone 2, I want to try it first.
I enjoyed the first Fable a lot, and, once again, Fable 2 is looking to only improve on the first game.
Too Human interests me from the praise people are giving it, and that I enjoy loot games.
I’m proud to own all three systems to enjoy all their great games, and nothing Hans or erik says will change that.

The hardware is basically even. The software is not! The games and XBL are way ahead of PSN and XMB. The POS3 has a handful of games that are great, MGS4 is not one of them.
I have three games for the POS3 (MGS4, Ratchet & Clank and Uncharted). Uncharted is the best out of all of them, MGS4 the worst. I will soon only have two, MGS4 is going to be traded.
I have 35 for the 360, 12 for the Wii.
I mainly watch movies on the POS3, that’s it. All my and my family’s game time is on the 360 (80%, 15% on the Wii, 5% on the POS3).
The trolls who run the asylum here can say all they want and be assholes to the people here who are truly gamers. All I know is, the 360 has been the best console this gen and always will be.
Hans, Paul and nextgenloser can yell all they want, they can go to hell, right from their parent’s basement!
And SDF, like it or not, Gears of War2, Fable 2 along with the price cut will make this holiday season a very good one for 360 and put the POS3 far behind in the rear view mirror.

Not sure of the Date, from what I heard the PC version is largely finished, but they want to make a good version for consoles too, not just a crappy PC port. One of the main reasons Half-life 2 took so long to reach consoles.

On an alternate note, who here bought/rented SoulCalibur 4? I just got it and its pretty fun, although button mashing gets you further than I would like. Yoda and Apprentice are absolutely broken though.
