Carmack: PS3 Version of RAGE to be Massively Superior to 360 Version due to Blu-Ray

Sony wins again.

Speaking during the QuakeCon keynote, id Software’s John Carmack has revealed that the Xbox 360′s DVD format could result in the developer’s upcoming game, Rage, being compromised on the platform.

According to Shacknews Carmack noted three DVDs will be needed for the Xbox 360 version, although royalty fees to include a third disc would rule out this option. Unless Microsoft makes a concession, id will be forced to release the game on two DVDs with heavy compression, thus making the game look worse than the PS3 version.

This was known since 2005 when it was revealed that the Playstation 3 would include the revolutionary Blu-Ray drive while Microsoft’s Xbox 360 was sticking to the vastly outdated DVD media. We’re already seeing games like Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid 4, and others look a generation apart from 360 exclusives, and we’re glad to see Carmack agree that the inclusion of Blu-Ray was a great choice and great for gamers.

    The differences have been slight so far but the farther into this generation we go, multiplatform games will want to take advantage of the capacity that blu ray offers over regular DVD. MS is going to have to get something in motion really soon or else they’re going to have to wait for the third Xbox console to do it.

    @hans

    You forgot some of the quote from the article and here is the full thing

    “According to Carmack, the royalty fees to include a third disc in the Xbox 360 version would be so high that it simply isn’t a feasible solution, with the programmer hoping for Microsoft to make a concession. He stressed that the issue is merely a storage problem and has nothing to do with the power of the Xbox 360 hardware, while adding that the PlayStation 3′s Blu-ray format is Sony’s one leg up on the competition.”

    BTW remember that the 360 fall update will allow the disc to be completely be put on the hard drive as well. So in theory all the necessary components of the game could be installed and the levels could just be read of the disc.

    Raz, you really need more people to help update this site more often. And please bring the forums back, I had so much fun pwning Xbots there. Awww the good times of SDF back in August/September 2007.

  7. Yawn… give me the PC version.

  8. Well,,, then,,, I would expect the same issue would be concerned with FFXIII ?

  9. “…the vastly outdated DVD media.”

    Yes i know. You wouldn’t believe the trouble i have had buying a second DVD player this week. Most sale staff have no idea what I’m talking about when i mention DVD. Don’t even start me on the lack of “vastly outdated” DVD’s to rent at my local video store. And when i comes to finding a movie to buy on DVD…

    Was bound to happen eventually as developers start getting used to the systems more and more.

    Sony wasn’t pulling shit out of their ass when they said “Future-proofing”

  11. xbox360FTW Says:

    WHO CARES! Yeah, $ony future proofed everything! NOT! After two years they just upgraded XMB (still can’t cross chat during games, etc)! Give me a break. Who care if the Dev can’t compress to fit on a DVD! Also, where is the link to what Carmack said this?

    Blu-ray came before it’s time, and HD_DVD was still the better format! MGS4 was a CGI movie crapfest!

    And there’s nothing that says compression will be worse. God, anything for the $ony fantards to put the 360 down.

    Give it a rest, POS3 in third this gen! Bye bye.

  12. YAWN!!! Need a new article already.

    Finally…a new one. Hurry up with the next one, huh, Hans?
    Just in case anyone actually takes this seriously, Carmack also went on to state that the 360 was the better console.
    Also, PC version kicks the shit out of console versions all over. Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 will NEVER even come close to overtaking the PC.

  14. Snoorrre…

    Oh, sorry!

    Carmack? You mean “Doom 3″ Carmack? The one that never does memorable games anymore? Please!

    On a side note:

    When I get LBP, I’ll name my Sackboy Hubert Cumberdale, and won’t sleep ever again.

  15. When I get LBP I’ll snap the disc in half and use it to slit my throat. Because if I bought LBP and a PS3 to go with it then I must obviously have some sort of malignant brain tumor. And I would have to end it all before I would end up on the level of Paul.

    Carmack is a huge name dude. He’s up there with Miyamoto.

  17. @rider of the short bus

    Aaaaaaand… When was the last time Miyamoto was not batshit-insane?

    And the last time Carmack made a good game as well.

    Can that excuse him for making SW I-III?

  20. InfraredChimera Says:

    @Goronian

    Well lets see what Carmack did last ummmm….
    Doom3 and now working on Doom4
    Orcs and Elves (which I got on my mobile phone along with Doom RPG and both are a freakin blast)
    The Quake series.

    Back to DOOM 3 though, the PC version was really good, but the problem with the original xbox version was it was the levels where either shortened or cut from it. Otherwise it was a damn fine game and the engine still holds up quite well.

  21. InfraredChimera Says:
    August 4th, 2008 at 2:32 pm

    @erik

    Why even buy LBP then if you say you’re going to snap it? The only thing you will be doing is putting money into the dev/publishers coffers and HELPING THEM OUT. The best thing you could do is not to buy it and not kill yourself.

  22. WhatTheFunk Says:

    Yet this newer article says…
    “To sum it up, Carmack and the rest of the team at id believe that the Xbox 360 is the superior hardware. The GPU is all around better, the CPU’s are powerful and easy to exploit and system RAM is plentiful while remaining flexible. These are all wonderful things from a developers point of view, which is what hardware makers want. The easier it is to get their games to run and run well on your system the better off it is for everyone.”

    Nextgenuser/Hans, got a way to spin this?

  26. RainbowSeven Says:

    @WhatTheFunk “That assumes that MS won’t offer a concession (FFXIII for 6DVD’s, apparently)”

    Even if FF does come out on 360, who cares? FF is like MGS: just a slightly interactive CG movie.
    If it does make it to 360, it’ll sell. If not, I won’t be shedding any tears.

    @Seven2s “The GPU is all around better, the CPU’s are powerful and easy to exploit and system RAM is plentiful while remaining flexible. These are all wonderful things from a developers point of view, which is what hardware makers want. The easier it is to get their games to run and run well on your system the better off it is for everyone.”

    Exactly. The 360 is the better console from nearly every point of view. The only reason Sony is still getting positive press (from REAL journalists) is that their PR/bullshit/lying department still has some momentum left over from the PS2 generation. If Sony were to stop making the PS2, as M$ did with the XBox, they would instantly go bankrupt. The fact that the PS2 continues to be manufactured is proof positive that Sony knows they’d be fucked without it.

    this is not a surprise that it looks worse on a last gen platform (xbox 360) and looks much better on the vastly superior ps3

  29. And yet, the PC version will still likely be better than both other versions.

    And I’m still waiting for SDF to recant their “AD FREE” claim.

  30. Staticbursts Says:

    Hasn’t it already been proved beyond reasonable doubt that the Xbox 360 is a trash system? I mean, watch this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDUIKIsEN0U

    360 has already lost the console war just like HD-SUCKTACULAR lost the high-def movie war.

  31. Still waiting for that spin on what I posted, Sony droids!

  32. Your picture doesn’t even make sense…

    You have the Blu-Ray logo in the front, with several discs behind it…

    I thought the entire point of Blu-Ray was that there WEREN’T multiple discs…

    You’re sending mixed messages.

  33. Just for those who donn’t believe that article about the interview of Mr. John Carmack.
    I just want to tell them stop saying *BS* about PS3 and the Blu-ray,
    Yes Carmack said blu-ray will help them holding a lot of data for the game, and he only said that PS3 is to understand how to develop for it. and 360 is easy because it has the same PC hardware and software architecture, and by the he conforms PS3 is a future prove,,,

    here the link of the video, and hope you stop critiszing US by calling us PS3fanboys and PS3 .

    Just another reason I am glad I got the PS3.

  35. I defeated PS3tards!

  36. Who cares that I have to change discs? I’ve been doing that since FFVII! I’d prefer to spend twenty seconds changing discs every ten hours of game play and have a good online than not change discs and have crap for online.

  37. Doesn’t matter, I’ll get the PC version for my beast gaming PC. If I didn’t have that I’d get the 360 over the POS3 because I only use my POS3 to watch movies and play one game that I have for it (Uncharted)! I played MGS4 and it SUCKS!!! Not a bad movie, but sucky video game!

    POS3 has less memory and a last gen Nvidia GPU!

    Sony suck and so do the $ony fantards (trvium, nectgenloser, paul and hans) as thier leaders!

    Sony sucks!

  38. OK, you may ask, “Why did you get a POS3 if Sony sucks so bad?” The answer would be what typifies $ony’s suckitude – support! Had a gone with the first non-Sony Flu-ray players, I would be SOL right now because none of them would support Profile 1.1 or above! Again, customers get screwed with $ony Proprietary crap and get no future support! i got the POS3 because I knew I would at least not have to deal with out-date Profile specs because of the almost Microsoft-esque updates $ONY AHAS FOR THE POS3.

    Other than movies and Uncharted, I play no games on it. Maybe LBP when it comes out, but that’s it!

  39. WhatTheFunk Says:
    August 5th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

    @Trivium:
    fuck you. seriously. sony included flu-ray, big deal. truth is, we aren’t too fucking lazy to get of our arses every 6 hours or so to change a goddamn disc.

    It takes around, what 10 seconds to change a disc: open tray, take disc out, put it in case, take disc out of case, place in drive, close tray. And then, at least a DVD does require an install, which I can assure you would be in excess of 10 seconds.

    Have fun with your vastly inferior online.

    @RainbowSeven:
    I wasn’t getting particularly excited at FFVIII because I’ve never really been a Final Fantasy guy. I’m not a huge JRPG fan either.

    Where is Paul or nextgenchink? ;_;

  40. nextgenmexican Says:
    August 5th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

    Anyway, as you will be able to install entire games on your HDD now, you can install all the disks, and leave disk 1 in, you wont have to change disks, and copying an entire game to 360 harddrive takes about 10 minutes, less than some PS3 install times.

  41. thebumbino Says:

    PS3 graphics are going to better on most games its a mroe powerful system gameplay will be the same on the 360 version

    on a random note i find it funny on top it says sony defense force something and ad free and some other stuff and then theres adds to get a free 360 with halo 3 all over the place could that get anymore ironic?

  42. rider of the short bus Says:
    August 5th, 2008 at 4:40 pm

    Blu-ray actually has nothing to do with the quality of games. It’s simply a storage medium.

  43. InfraredChimera Says:
    August 5th, 2008 at 5:23 pm

    @whatthefunk

    As a new PS3 owner, the online isn’t half bad at all for games like Resistance. Though it does lack the functionality of XBL though and I’m glad I do pay for XBL for what I get for it. Not saying PSN sucks (the PSN Store is a helluva lot more put together than marketplace and its easier to find shit on there), its just not no XBL and sony has gots some catching up to do.

  44. @thebumbino

    Yeah. I think they put up the whole “AD FREE” thing after the made an article about Gamespot sporting the Halo 3 Mountain Dew ads. After that, they toted the line about them being ad-free. I think they kinda blew that about a month ago.

  45. What awards has SDF won? Because they claim to have won something.

  46. “360 is better!”, “Wii is better!”, “PS3 is better!”, “PC is better!”

    You know what? Fuck this shit! If one thing is going to turn me off gaming it’s fanboys. Gah!

  47. honestly i dont care if the 360 is more powerful than the ps3. the Xbox was more powerful than the ps2 and look at where that one went. Power isn’t everything its the quality of gaming were receiving. Microsoft might have more exclusives now but i feel sony is treading behind them and is gradually catching up.

    In regards to the disc changing issue, its really not a big one but why should we have to go back to changing discs when it was kept to a minimal during the ps2 era? The most Discs I’ve seen on a PS2 game have was like 2 and sometimes the 2nd disc would be some kind of extra content or something rather than being part of the actual game. If i know i can play a game without switching discs then why would i want to go back to changing 5-6 discs. Consider what would happen if just ONE of those discs broke, 1 broken disc = broken game. Its not about being lazy, anyone can change discs as well as wait for an install file but I wont compromise with something that is so last-gen,were past the disc changing phase and now we gotta go back to it? that isn’t cool, period.

  48. @ nextgenmexican
    You’ll still need to swap discs if you install the game on 360. You have to put the disc in the drive to prove you own it, which makes some sense.

  49. rider of the short bus Says:

  50. They wont the “I fucking farted and shat my pants!” award.
    Also I think it’s funny how that if PS3 is doing so well, then how come Wii gets stuff like it’s very own remake of Dead Rising.(It’s more of a remake then a port.)

  51. nextgenmexican Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 1:32 pm

    @sm0ke

    Im saying that if you install all the disks, and leave disk one in, you wont have to disk swap as they are all stored on your harddrive, and having that 1 disk in your harddrive proves you own the game still.

  52. InfraredChimera Says:
    August 6th, 2008 at 1:42 pm

    Thats why you just try to ignore fanboys altogether.

    @nextgenmexican

    When the install games to the harddrive finally gets here, then I will definitly buy Mass Effect. The only reasons I haven’t played it yet are
    1. The load times I heard where pretty crappy at times.
    2. Just don’t have the time to invest in a RPG at the time.

  53. @ seven2s

    I dunno about Dead Rising Wii. I mean, a large amount of the fun was running around decapitating zombies, and the Wii version doesn’t seem to be able to hold as many zombies on-screen. Seems like a downgrade, even if they throw in extra weapons.

  54. @InfaredChimera
    Been awhile since I played, so I don’t remember anything about load times. But because I don’t remember, they can’t have been too incredibly bad. I recommend renting from blockbuster to see. Or maybe finding a youtube that has the load time shown.

    Also, I don’t think that every game will be downloadable. It will probably be similar to the POS3′s trophy thing. Only select games will have it.
