Sony’s 10 Year Plan In Full Effect
November NPDs were released a few days ago showing strong momentum of the Playstation family during a period of economic uncertainty. Sony is clear on their way to sell their projected 10 million Playstation 3′s during the fiscal year.
During 2009, Sony sees a number of stunning titles only possible with the power of the Playstation 3. February 27th begins the launch of the graphical showboat Killzone 2, which will be followed up with InFamous, Heavy Rain, Uncharted 2, Final Fantasy XIII (exclusive in Japan), and Gran Turismo 5. This amazing lineup of exclusives, coincidng with a potential price drop sometime in 2009, will mark a transitionary period for the Playstation 3′s sales.
2007 was the year of the PS3, along with 2008, and we’re happy to report that 2009 will be an even greater year of the PS3.

I recall GT4 was supposed to be out for Christmas ’03. We got it in 2005. Who wants to bet on a 2011 release for GT5?
Why is this a Ten Year Plan if it only shows five years?
Doing the math, SDF expect the PS3 to sell 320 million units in the next five years. They also expect the Wii to sell 405 units… Surely you’re not being defeatist SDF?
Now review Home
You know, this is possible…if the PS3 drops prices to about 100-150 bucks.
The $ony $uckers just can’t handle the truth. So sad.
IT BEGINS?
No mention of the fact that Gears of War 2 has sold more than Little Big Planet or Resistance 2? So sad SDF.
And now that I compare more sales. Fable 2 is beating the hell out of Little Big Planet. So just how was 2008 the year of the PS3 when a game that SDF admonishes is beating the hell out of one of the PS3s pretty new flagship games?
LOL, gotta love SDF. Only SDF could never see that the PS3 is getting it’s ass kicked by everything.
What i dont get, if theres so many PS3′s sold and they are outselling the Xbox 360, why isnt anyone buying any PS3 games. R2 and LBP has bombed, and no one cares about MGS4 anymore. It begins.. i guess.
every year is the year of the ps3 even before it was released
How can 2008 have been the year of the PS3 if its cumulative sales were below both the 360 and Wii?
This year:
Wii: 40 Million
360: 24 Million
PS3: 17 Million
http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=Wii®1=All&cons2=PS3®2=All&cons3=X360®3=All&start=39453&end=39789&weekly=1
VGChartz is wrong.
The last confirmed shipment numbers at the end of september shows the PS3 at 17 million and the 360 at 22.5 million.
So, 5.5 million difference, which is completely negligible in the large scheme of things, and it’s even more pathetic for the 360 considering it’s at a mass market $199 price point, and roughly the same price as a PS2 in Europe.
@Hans
You have no credibility. If someone is going to trust either you or VGChartz then very likely someone isn’t going to trust the person who tried to pass off a screenshot of the PS3 version of GTA4 with a Photoshop mosaic blur as the 360 version of the same game.
Momentum?
PS3 sold less units in november 2008 then november 2009. You’re so fucking brain dead Hans. And look at your chart? Did you fucking fail first grade math? I didn’t!
You have them winning for ONE year, by a tiny margin. Hate to break it to you stupid, but that doesn’t combat the Wii’s combined sales. If you breed, I will have you hunted down, and shot for the safety of mankind.
The thing I like the most, is that they’ve used the same chart they used in 2007 or so. Seeing how “well” PS3 does now is truly ironic.
@hans
“The last confirmed shipment numbers at the end of september shows the PS3 at 17 million and the 360 at 22.5 million.”
The devil is in the details, you got shipment and sold numbers confused. Shipement is how many the units went from warehouse to retail (shipped to retail in total) and sold is when there bought from the consumer.
So while there might be a 5 million difference in what was shipped between the 360 and PS3, what matters the most is how many where sold and the 360 sold more than the PS3 plain and simple.
^^^correction
and sold is when there bought from the consumer.
meant “and sold is when there bought by the consumer”
Hans, I demand an explanation for your flawed math.
The Wii sold 2+ MILLION units in November alone, while the PS3′s sales this November have decreased from last November. How does that equate to winning? On top of all that, that chart has no factual backing. Maybe for 2008′s numbers. If Sony is depending on people like you, no wonder they are doing so poorly. Their own flunkies can’t even get their shit together.
Home is a huge flop.
LBP is a huge flop.
R2 is a huge flop.
MGS 4 sold well, but it failed to make a difference.
Every expectation set by the SDF was wrong.
Going by the previews Heavenly Rain is turning out to be a QTE fest.
Sony is NOT the powerhouse of the PS1/PS2 days.
Dragon Quest, the one series that is more popular in Japan then FF? Only on Nintendo systems now, that’s the main series too, not just the spin-offs
FF? The main series has gone Multi-platform.
VF? Multiplatform.
Tekken? Multiplatform.
Monster Hunter? Nope sorry, Capcom shot down that multi-platform rumor. MH3 is only for the Wii.
Dead Rising? Wii gets it’s own port built for it specifically.
House of the dead? Wii gets it’s own sequel!
Now there’s huge buzz that the next MGS isn’t even going to be on a Sony console! How funny will that be when the next installment is on the iphone?
PS3 was not about a superior game console, it was about installing Blu-ray. And even that’s not going as well as planned.
Nintendo doesn’t need a defense force.
Microsoft doesn’t need a defense force.
Sony needs a real defense force, and not some stooges that are as lost as they are.
Just played Fable II, and it’s FUCKING AWESOME. Wanted to throw it out there.
@seven2s
So you determine quality of game by the sales numbers? LBP and R2 are damn fine games and if you have never played them then how can you accurately even say there a flop.
If a flop is determined by sales then Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, Left 4 Dead, Civilization Revolution, and FarCry 2. Then all games that I just mentioned are flops and shouldn’t be played. While some of these games are considered by many a game that shouldn’t be missed, unfortunatly no one played them or just passed on them because they didn’t have a year or number after the title.
So while you love to point out shortcomings on the Sony side of things, maybe you should look at all the failings of MS and Nintendo. Faulty hardware to save a buck but backfires and a multibillion dollar apology to fix there mistake, real lackluster 3rd party support and a glutton of shovelware, expensive ass peripherals that shouldn’t cost as much but I have to pay for the full experience, a underpowered console that already was somewhat outdated out of the gate, MS trying to appeal to the casual market (and doing a crappy job to boot) when they got the hardcore in there hand.
I could keep going but why should I since I already proven one thing; who gives a shit what any of us thinks.
@InfaredChimera
For R2 to be a “damn fine game” it would have to be 6000x better than the original game. The first one pushed so few barriers that it really didn’t have all that much to seperate it from DOOM or Wolfenstein.
@erik
STFUAJPG
@InfaredChimera
As long as none of those games are Resistance or its sorry ass sequel.
@InfraredChimera
I don’t know abot you, but I think both FarCry2 and Shadow Of The Colossus are nothing to write home about. I’m sick of the hype surrounding SotC, it was just an endless array of repetetive boss fights, set in some kind of grey mesh. Oh, yes, it was “pretty”, uh-huh…
@goronian
at least you actually played SotC and formed a opinion thats respectable and can be seen that way. I see SotC in a different way than you do and what counts is that you actually played it in the first place.
It will never begin, it already ended … for the POS3:
CNN Money’s Silicon Alley Insider column, via 1up.com, in an analysis of PS3 sales numbers, has called the console a “sinking ship”.
Sales of the PS3 year-on-year have declined 19 per cent, while every other console seems to be doing rather good things for its associated manufacturer.
The Playstation Home beta was launched for all and sundry to play with last week, and Eurogamer has a rather damning review.
For POS3, it does not end with a bang, but a whimper!
Good to see you go POS3, and I hope $ony goes with it!!!!
seven2s:
That is the funniest thing I have seen on these boards, and you are right, any offspring Hans has need to be eradicated, else we will all fall to the Flood!!!
@InfraredChimera
I play a lot of weird unknown shit. And to this day I’m still looking for a game, that can capture me more, than Heroes III. God damn you, Canaghem, you’ve ruined the series on purpose, haven’t you?
Just to throw it in, the trailer for GTA4: Lost & Damned (PS3 owners dont need to worry about it cause u wont be playing it, lol) has been released.
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/43632.html
@goronian
Yeah it is kinda tough to top Heroes 3 ain’t it? That game just got all the right mix of everything thrown into it and it all worked beautifully, I’m playing Disgaea 3 (PS3) and thats actually quite deep and know I wanna get the first two since they where on the PS2 and the store I work for has the first two used as well.
Have you ever heard of and played Spaceward Ho!? It was a New World Computing game released between Kings Bounty and Heroes 1.
@InfraredChimera
I’ve heard about it, but couldn’t track it down. If you like immersive games and, especially, Elite-like games (that is, space “sim”, with open world and a lot of trade) TRACK DOWN SPACE RANGERS. Seriously, this game got ZERO coverage outside of Russia and it’s one of the best games ever made. Yes, 2D, yes, no voice acting, yes, the plot is cheesy as hell. But you’ll be loosing yourself time and time again, just liberating the Dominator-infested systems and doing various quirky side-quests. Buy it, ebay it, torrent it, whatever. Nobody really cares anymore, since developers are doing something else already.
InfraredChimera,
That’s like asking why the SDF isn’t saying anything positive about MS or Nintendo.
Besides, I love the fact that Hans never has the ability to directly respond with something that even closely resembles un-spun facts.
Thanks for this one, h@ns. The first article posted about kzone2 was much too subtle, and people had to be aware F@bleII won the game of the year of award from x-pl@y to get the joke on that one…
now this one, though – not too subtle.
thanks for bringing back the lolz.
Now what I don’t understand, is that Home ended up being a let down. But PS3 fantards are like “It’s only a beta!!!”
That excuse didn’t fly when the Halo 3 beta was released!
@Xbox360ftw
“Good to see you go POS3, and I hope $ony goes with it!!!!”
Actually if the Playstation brand goes bye-bye, that would have very negative effects on the game industry in a whole and the electronics industry in general. Believe it or not Sony is a major player and they do have a stake in the games industry as much as Nintendo or MS as well, so to wish ill well on them is a shitty thing to do (not to mention wishing alot of people to lose there jobs in the process).
@seven2s
The PS3 fantards do have a point that it is a beta and there is a quite a bit of opportunity for it, but right now its definitly a useless and contentless pile of crap.
I call BS on that.
The industry didn’t suffer when Sega dropped out of the console market. Let the PS3 twist in the wind.
And since “It’s just a beta” wasn’t allowed for Non-Sony products. It’s not ok for Sony products.
@InfaredChimera
“Actually if the Playstation brand goes bye-bye, that would have very negative effects on the game industry in a whole and the electronics industry in general.”
So what are you saying? That we have to smile like simpletons and buy Sony’s crap even when they are feeding us shit by the spoonful?
I don’t mean to be rude, but, are you trying to be stupid, erik?
Sony, for the most part, is a good Corporation.
Microsoft, on the other hand… well, just look up “Xbox disc scratching” on google news, and you’ll see how much Microsoft cares for their fans.
Except for the fleecing of their customers by a system which has, ah-heh, dropped to $400. No, sorry. Sony is shit. And there is no way in fuck I would have dropped ANY money on their worthless Blu-Ray player if I didn’t have a Wii, a load of games, and some extras to trade in.
Fuck $ony.
Look erik, if Sony *could* cut prices they would do it!!! BUT THEY CAN’T!!!!
It costs them $500 just to make the thing!
It cost them $3 billion to make in the first year!!
The first Blu-Ray players used to cost up to $1000!!!
A guy from Sony even said they may never recover all the money they used making the PS3!!!!
Sony did more for their fans then Microsoft ever did!
So stop being an idiot and READ THE FACTS!
How about if *you* tell us how they can cut prices on the thing for a change? How would you cut costs?, hmm?
@erik
So its fleecing when Sony drops a Blu-ray player and bluetooth into a console and people know about the features, and its not fleecing there customers when a company releases a console that WILL eventually die on you and then that said company says there’s nothing wrong with it and its a isolated incident?
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm makes you think whos fucking over who more?
Wow. You actually started regular updates again this month. I’d given up hope.
Good work with the continuance of bad comedy.
I also see that you haven’t removed the ‘ad free’ tag.
@InfaredChimera
Yes, shoving those features down someone’s throat and then charging over half a grand upon release IS fleecing your customers.
But you want to know the ironic thing? When I was a Sony fan I was spending money on a console that WILL eventually die on me and said company says there’s nothing wrong with it and its an isolated incident. That console was one of the greatest consoles made, the PS2. I’d gladly Sony go back to those days, even with the unreliability. Now if I wasn’t such a Sony fan back then, I wouldn’t have bought like 5 PS2s now would I?
I’d gladly buy a dozen more PS2s before ever dropping money on a PS3 again.
@Zoar
“Look erik, if Sony *could* cut prices they would do it!!! BUT THEY CAN’T!!!!”
Actually there is something they could have done to cut prices. Not release a feature bloated, beached whale of a system in the first place. Without all of those features they wouldn’t have those sorry excuses you mentioned now would they?
So that is how I would cut costs, not release idiotic features in the first place. Any more questions?
Zoar is the new Paul.
Now his penis will be nestled in the crack of Hans’ ass, while Sony’s is in his.
@erik
Noone seems to bitch when they buy a PC with all those useless features such as office, paint, internet browsers, calculator, accessibility options, photo editing, dvd player/burner, and etc. Also if I pay alot of money for something it better come with a bunch of shit either:
1. I won’t need
2. Will sometime use, but at the present time its not possible.
For crying out loud all I use my PC for is for internet, playing emulated consoles of yesteryear, porn, and itunes. Otherwise than that I don’t use word or any of that crap anymore, I don’t burn CDs, or watch DVDs on it, for all intensive purposes its for the internet and thats it.
So to say sony is fleecing its customers is idiotic, especially if you know what your getting than its not fleecing. Also since working for a GameStore, most people who buy a PS3 actually are surprised with what it can do besides the primary fuctions of the console, and are even more happier with there decision on buying one. Oh yes we do get the people that have had enough with the 360 and trade it in and do buy a PS3 and we rarely get used PS3s and Wii’s in.
@InfaredChimera
Apples/Oranges. That is because a computer is not primarily designed with games in mind. As where a game console is. Ergo a game console should be designed to, you know, play games. I am very NOT happy with all of the extra crap thrown onto Sony’s shit pile to inflate its price. I am NOT happy with the decision of buying one.
Trying to compare a PC with a game console = Fail.
Try again.
TO seven2s: Fuck you.
I try giving people chances, but if you’re going to act like a queer, then I’m going to have to treat you like one.
TO seven2s:
Try to act as if you have a brain, like erik and InfaredChimera does.
And I’m willing to say the Xbox 360 has a lot more good games for it, so there. If it wasn’t for the hardware failures, it would be the best console out there. No really, it would!
So who’s penis is up who’s ass?
@Zoar Says:
“Sony, for the most part, is a good Corporation.”
Fuck off, douchebag; Sony is a bloated, greedy, lying mega-corporation, who kill off their competition through sleazy marketing/sales tactics (a la what they did to the DreamCast), blatantly lie about the capabilities of their consoles (E3 Killzone 2 “in-game” footage, anyone?) and were run by a certifiable madman, “Krazy” Ken Kutaragi.
Sony is an electronics manufacturer. All they care about is profitability.
Nintendo is a videogaming company, whose primary focus is gaming. There are far more good games for the Wii than there are for the PoS3.
There are also more good games for the 360 than there are for the PoS3.
Having said that, I will still be buying Killzone 2…
What did they do with the DreamCast?
@zoar
“Microsoft, on the other hand… well, just look up “Xbox disc scratching” on google news, and you’ll see how much Microsoft cares for their fans.”
Um, what dumbass moves a console while it’s on, never mind while a disk is spinning inside it? It’s not a portable CD player, it’s a console. To those that do, tough shit dumb ass, don’t be stupid. This is a law suit to protect dumb people.
To xbox360FTW:
It’s people like you who give fans a bad name. Are you a troll or something?
What, are you one of the dumb asses that move the console while it was on? So MS has to pay for what stupid people do? Your an ass if you think so. I nor any one of the 15 people with 360s I know of have ever had a scratched disk. Why? They done move them while it’s on!
You sir are the troll!
(sigh)….
In a perfect world Microsoft would be able to sue the people who have scratched discs for negligent stupidity.
I think we all can agree on one thing; if you move your console with a disc in the drive and don’t expect it to get fucked up, then you need to get a bullet in the brain.
@erik
In a perfect world people whould actually take responsibility for there actions and have a healthy dose of common sense.
yeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
@Zoar
Should we call a WAAAAAAAMBULANCE?
To Goronian:
If you’re going to act stupid, then I’m not talking to you.
goodbye
Yeah … well …. I’m taking my toys and going home! Nya Nya!
What a baby, grow up Zoar.
No xbox360FTW, it’s just that talking to people like you is like very closely watching a man masturbate, and I’m just too heterosexual to be doing that for you homos.
@erik
I think I understand you a bit more, but let me ask you this:
1. If Sony made the PS4 to be just like the PS3, only with a better graphics card, would you be happy?
2. Folding@home helping us to find a cure for diseases. Would you be happier if PS3 didn’t come with Folding@home?
@Zoar
“… is like very closely watching a man masturbate”
You sick little puppy, you would like that wouldn’t you! Sick!
folding@home is a third party software application. It doesn’t fall under the category bloated features. However to make a list of things that should have been scrapped in order to reduce costs:
Bluetooth: limitations+liscensing rights
WiFi: wireless gaming is just too laggy
Cardreaders: 30€ or so but it was useless anyway
Touchpad buttons: expensive, simple clickbuttons suffice
Cellchip: get a powerPC multicore chip. It’s cheaper and more useful for gaming
hardware BC: work on software BC. ps2 bc costed over 200€ to implement. That’s why they slashed it.
and last but not least:
Blu-ray: time and again it’s been proven that blu-ray has no added benefit this generation for games. It added over 250€ to the cost of the ps3 at launch. No one ever died of disc swapping…
So all in all, a total slash of useless features would have made a 300€ launch ps3 with profit possible. Xbox would have been dead today if that had happened.
Not to add the increased graphics by better gpu combined with a serious gaming cpu (powerpc). It’d been a giant leap over the 360 instead of slightly less powerful. Add to that easier development and cheaper games of consumers and you’d got the perfect successor for the ps2.
post scriptum: why do I feel like describing the 360?
@marnick
You could not be more right. The $ony fantards don’t realize that the 360 didn’t have wireless for a reason, no serious gamer uses it because of lag, hardwired is the way to go. The bluetooth was stupid and the biggest waste of money was the bluray! They could have done DVD to keep the price down AND do what the 360 did, have a cheap addon for bluray (still would have been cheaper than a standalaone at launch)! But now, $ony was arrogant and thought people would work 2-3 jobs in order to get it. Dumb Sony. Now, the $299 60Gb 360 is a great deal over POS3 and for only $50 more, leaps ahead of the Wii, which is a fad and will die out, graphics always matter as does the content, and all the great content is on the 360 (the 8.1 attachment rate proves it).
@Zoar
“1. If Sony made the PS4 to be just like the PS3, only with a better graphics card, would you be happy?”
First off, I despise the PS3. Therefore why would I want the PS4 to be anything like it? Secondly, why do graphics matter?
“2. Folding@home helping us to find a cure for diseases. Would you be happier if PS3 didn’t come with Folding@home?”
Depends on what Folding@home adds to the price. If its significant then axe it.
Xbox360FTW: I tend to disagree about the wii dying out. It’s not a fad, fads don’t stay for over 2 years and still strong. There are no signs of the wii dying out anytime in the near to midfar future. The wii has loads of potential. I love my wii to bits and I’m eagerly awaiting more of the really good games I bought it for on launch day.
I’ll say it again: graphics don’t matter in the slightest. They simply are not important. That’s an undeniable fact. They are nice, but as I call it: i have matrix eyes. I look straight through the graphics and see the underlying game. Both wii and ps3 lack in the matrix department. The wii has potential to become better. The ps3 hardly doesn’t.
@erik: folding adds nothing. It was a third party patch sometime after the release in an attempt to make people put their ps3 on even without games. Axing it wouldn’t do any good. Some people enjoy not playing on their console and still paying for the damn thing and electricity.
@xbox360ftw
MS could have at least built the wireless thing into the console at least instead of dropping $99 for it, and the bluetooth is just a damn nice feature to have especially when buying a headset to play online with that also doubles for your phones headset as well.
@marnick
Both the Wii and PS3 have potential to be better consoles. The Wii needs to improve on the quality of its library, c’mon lets face it, the Wii has a TON of games that are pure shit on a disc.
As far the PS3 is concerned, it needs to be marketed a helluva lot better than now, the advertising for it is shit, and unfortunatly it shows. Also the price NEEDS to come down by a $100 to be competitive with not only MS and Nintendo, buy also stand-alone BD players as well. There’s no doubt about it, that the PS3 (currently) is the gamecube of this generation, and with the annoucment of Dragon Quest 10 coming to the Wii, it shows who the market leader is at the moment and its kinda sad to see Sony trying to recover from what could have been easily the number 1 console this generation if it was handled more properly.
Ofcourse I face the fact that the wii has a fair share of shovelware. Reminds me of the ps2/ps1 shovelware. It’s just expected with the n°1 console. But the real games are lacking too and that’s not good for anyone.
The ps3 has no potential. It’s too expensive for end users and games tend to be buggy, less visually appealing and short because of prolonged and expensive development cycles. This can’t be fixed without releasing the ps4.
And @Zoar: the ps4 would have to be remarkably different from the ps3 to have any chance of not ending fourth place after some random newcomer.
To marnick and erik:
You don’t care for graphics?! What are you, gay?
I think of games needing to be as good as the best Hollywood movies out there, with the best physics, and we’ll nowhere near that.
Besides, just look at Wii when you don’t care about graphics; Some of the best games could have been made for the wii if only it had the graphics to do it.
@Zoar
“I think of games needing to be as good as the best Hollywood movies out there, with the best physics, and we’ll nowhere near that.”
Yes, graphics really don’t matter to me. I much prefer, say, Final Fantasy 6 over Final Fantasy 8(ick), despite its graphical superiority.
And as far as Hollywood goes I prefer the effects of the first Nightmare on Elm street in comparison to the computer generated garbage of Freddy Vs. Jason.
GRAPHIX IZ ALL THAT MATTERZ!
RAWR!
THE CELL SHALL RULE THE EARTH!
as sad as it is the wii is going to dominate this console war simply due to the fact it’s cheap and appeals to casual’s there will always be more casual’s then hardcore gamers.
