PSP 2 coming soon; iPhone, DS destroyed
The next iteration of Sony’s PSP handheld will feature a sliding screen, will no longer carry a UMD drive and will allow shoulder button-only games to be played when the screen is in its ‘closed’ position.
That’s according to a development source close to Sony, speaking to Eurogamer on condition of anonymity. We first broke the news of a new update to the system late last year, revealing that PSP-4000, the third incremental hardware revision of the console, is planned for release later this year.
While Sony has refused to comment so far, further rumours have emerged in the past week claiming that 4000 will represent the first major overhaul of the system, with a sliding screen added and the UMD drive removed.
Our development source today confirmed these reports, adding: “The screen is basically the same as the one in the 3000 – except it slides.” When ‘closed’, we were told, the screen won’t cover the entire face of the console, but the unit will be “significantly smaller in width” as a result.
With the console in its ‘closed’ state, most controls will be inaccessible. However, our source claims that games which use the shoulder buttons exclusively – such as LocoRoco – will be playable, as these inputs will still be accessible. It’s expected that the unit can also be used for media playback in this configuration.
Eurogamer further understands Sony is approaching developers for ideas for games that only require the shoulder buttons.
Sony said this afternoon it does not comment on rumour or speculation.
Well the DS and iPhone had a good run but it looks like, with this iteration of PSP, Sony will deal a crushing blow to both platforms. Stay tuned to SDF for further developments.

Why would I play UMD movies or games? They’re slower, use more battery and more prone to damage than memory card based equivalents. UMD was a complete failure, I’m more than happy that it’s been eliminated.

I couldn’t agree more with you about UMDs. Not that I don’t own a PSP, but with my time working for Gamestop it just seemed like those things where easy to break with little effort. I always hated working with them in fear of breaking the little buggers.
The UMD’s were a retarded idea. But that’s typical for Sony, with their mania for DRM and Proprietary Tech.
The DS pwns the PSP in EVERY way. There is nothing that I would want to do on a PSP that I can’t do on a DS. – I use my DS for games, movies, music, etc.

There’s so much proprietary tech in the psp, it’s not even funny. Memorysticks are overpriced and lower quality as well as larger physical size. Why can’t sony just use sd cards? Same for UMD’s, they are a failure. It’s based on ps2 technology which has been historically hard to use, a challenge most handheld devs don’t bother with. Add to that a failure of a analog stick.
Compare to nds: memory cards are fast, sd cards for the movieplayer, arm7 and arm9 chips for processing. Arm chips are about the most powerful, lowbattery, easy architectures to make games with. Also the winning touchscreen design.

First zoar: your psp-1000 is screwed, that’s the first iteration and will become obsolete with the psp2.
Second: games will probably come with either download or memorycard based. Both are superior to UMD’s. Just look to nintendo, they’ve been in this bussiness for over 20 years, they know what they’re doing. Sony doesn’t.
The ps1 was marketing success. The ps2 lived off the ps1 momentum whilst being inferior to all it’s contemporaries. The ps3 doesn’t need explanation as it’s failures are quite blatant. The psp is a failure too, maybe they’ll get it right with the psp2 and/or ps4
I’ve had a PSP for quite some time and I love it..but I don’t think I’ve ever actually bought a game for it. I’ve used it as one gigantic emulator/multimedia device and it does that VERY well.
All this mock-up PSP2 image and the story demonstrate is that the PSP2 is more powerful than the DS. But you know what? So is the original PSP. The DS is definitely underpowered, but look at it’s sales total! Globally to date, the PSP is just under 50m units and the DS is just a hair under 100m and they were both released within a month of each other (in Japan). This is just further proof that all because a system is powerful, doesn’t mean it will sell. Sony made the mistake with the original PSP AND the PS3 and they are both dead last in terms of sales in their respective categories. When will Sony learn?
Oh, and I can guarantee with almost 100% certainty that this is fake. Not that the PSP2 isn’t on its way, but the images are clearly mock-up shots.

It is a failure… People only bought it because of the Sony brand on it. More than ninety percent of sales can be attributed to brand recognition, not quality as a gaming system. No well informed person would have bought it because knowledge about the system proves that it is incapable of it’s primary function: playing games.
Also comparing the psp to other failures like the game gear or N-Gage only proves my point. Comparing it against tv consoles is stupid, a successful handheld can sell up to 200 million units.

Just because its more than a DS, it doesn’t mean its profitable. The same principal applies for the PS3, at launch of that console it actually costed sony close to a $1000 to build each console and then to sell it at $600 is a loss.
Personally I wouldn’t mind owning a PSP (so I could hack the shit out of it), but for pure gamming wise; I would goto the DS anyday.

Alright hypothetically speaking, would it be alright for a “game reviewer” to review a game that he/she hasen’t played yet? No it wouldn’t, that wouldn’t make much sense and there creditability would be shot. The same can be applied with people outside of the gaming industry as well (except the creditability thing, since we don’t have none).
Now since neither of us work in the gamming industry and we have to buy our games, being skeptical is normal behavior on something that has a sketchy past. Now does that mean you should buy the game in question, no but a little research goes a long way. Reading reviews, renting or playing the game at a friends house are all valid forms of research and it makes just plain sense.
Now don’t get your panties in a twist, but sometimes the only way you will know if you like something is if you try it. And if you do respond with a fucking juvenile analogy (like the ones erik uses to prove nothing) then grow up.
I predicted that I would hate KZ2, and lo and behold I did! Though that really isn’t soothsaying as much as common sense. When a shit game company makes a sequel to a shit game on a shit system well… rocket science it is not. Sort of like when the brakes went out on my car a few years back. Look here infrared: the big difference between me and a reviewer are as follows: a reviewer get PAID to review a game he received for FREE. On the other hand I have to pay for a game to try it out. Ofcourse I read reviews and mostly sound very negative, despite having blatantly biased scores. If you actually read the kz2 reviews you’ll see that the meat (gameplay) of the games is sub-par.
Now ofcourse I could have predicted this. As a matter of fact I did. Bad predecessor, bad developper and a console with a history of bad games. What more do you want infrared? At least the wii has potential compared to the ps3.

If you didn’t know the brakes where going bad in your own car then thats more your fault than anything. A little bit of checking brake fluid or any weird noises should have been a cause for alarm or unless the whole entire brake line went out, then theres nothing you could of done.

@Infrared: I know the reviews all have high scores. If you read my post you saw I acknowledged that. Let me remind you to read the reviews though. Appart for the graphics there’s not much praise for the game. Gameplay lacks, graphics in all honesty are quite bland, the story is sucky at best… All things that drive me away from this game when I READ the reviews.
All things straight: friend of mine played kz1 and he’s never buying kz2. So I wonder who actually buys that game. Must be the harshest of fanboys afaik.

The one thing that they do say (most importantly) is that the game is solid. Sure it doesn’t offer anything “new”, but if all the components work right and the game is FUN then thats all that matters in the end.
I got KZ1 (free from sony) and its mediocre at best. But does that game affect my opinion of KZ2, no it doesn’t. The thing I can do is (and anyone can do it) differentiat between two products. See KZ2 is its own game, like how FarCry 2 is its own game. See being able not to judge the current game from its predecessor is a talent that can be easily learned with some practice.

Its actually easy why people would buy a videogame that you don’t like (or vice versa), because its fun. Hell a broken piece of crap game like Legendary does offer fun, even though there is tons more problems or on par with that of the original killzone.
But here’s another why the way I look at games, cult movies. We all seen shitty movies that are so bad, but actually enjoyed them because they where bad. Don’t get me confused with playing a shit game for the sake of it, a bad game is just a bad game. But a bad game that is actually playable and you can have fun with it (ie Legendary), just make you appreciate a real good game even more.
Also remember that videogames are just escapism entertaiment, and too think to deeply and criticize someone because of the game(s) they play, is just plainly being a tit.

Infrared: your arguments are flawed, as usual. Cult movies are usually extremely good movies with low budgets, therefore not becoming mainstream before leaving cinema. This is what makes them cult. Take movies like boondock saints, lock stock and two smoking barrels or memento. They are exquisite but cult. 90% of people won’t even know them.
However 90% of people do know kz2 and most have very bad opinions about it. Either firsthand (everyone who played it) or secondhand (through reviews) or thirdhand (having played kz1). Either way only extreme fanboys like the game. My point stands.

On the point of not dissing the 360. There’s a couple of reasons for it. At first this site is a sonydefenseforce therefore I try to give an unbiased opinion compared to the bs posted on this blog. Yes this is a anti-sony opinion I’m well aware of that.
Second: the ps3 and alot of it’s games plainly suck. It’s not like sony made it difficult for us to diss it.
Third: Gameswise the 360 is the best console of this gen. Hardwarewise it’s a good combination of hardware although prone to failure (before the advent of falcon). It is without doubt the best console to have to play games.
So I’m dissing the ps3 and won’t badmouth the ps3. That’s both easy, logical and normal. Three traits that aren’t bad in my book.

Playing you’re in the movies with a couple of girls last night. Damn this is one good game. I don’t get how it can only get 56% on average whilst sucky games like KZ2 get around 90%. There’s some kind of bias towards hyped games.
To respond to SDF’s most recent Twatter post regarding Ninja Gaiden: Ninja Gaiden Sigma, the original, was on the PS3. So how the hell does the sequel being released on the PS3 (as the original game was) equate to the 360 losing an exclusive? It never was an exclusive.
The series itself has never been very exclusive to any company. It is sort of like the game property version of Hans’ mom.

I couldn’t agree more on the bioshock thing. The story was complete and any sequels will fall in the dreaded “to be continued” trilogy syndrome. See halo2, back to the future2 and other games/movies.
It turns out the PS3 is going to be getting some good games soon. No its not what you think, but apparently Capcom is going to be adding a lot of its PS1 titles to the PSN. It began, fucking years ago and sadly ended with the release of the PS3.

Actaully all the consoles saw a sales increase across the board. Which is good, considering that the economy is shit and people are spending money on consoles and game games for them.
Also not to shit on your parade, the PS3 saw the biggest sales increase at %36. But the 360 (up %27) version of SF4 sold more than the PS3 version (by about 40k).

I’ve figured out why the SDF hasn’t run an NG Sigma II story. They would have to admit to getting sloppy seconds. Honestly the SDF isn’t even trying anymore. They’re too busy playing “Hey, is that YOUR dick up my ass?” to come up with D+ material.
I am wondering, I see killzone2 adverts all over the place but it’s just a crap game. It’s the fifth or so time already that sony hypes a crap game. Lair and haze come to mind, the others I forgot.
Why not hype the good games? Every fanboy says ps3 has good games so please… hype them, make them known. At least microsoft counterhyped with an AA title (halo wars).
Sony Defence Force is Fucking retarded. The Iphone is a PHONE. the psp 2 isnt going to “destroy” the iPhone because i doubt the psp 2 , which is just a rumor, will be able to make phone calls. and the DS, despite the fact its not as powerful as the PSP, is far more fun to play. i honestly think sony screwed themselves over with the PS3, making it far to powerful and to expensive to begin with. sure, the price drop mightve helped but the people waiting for the drop most likly bout a 360 before it happened. and speaking of the 360, rumors of the next Xbox are going around. sony should just go back to making tv’s and computers
