NPD: Sony wins yet another month

The North American video game sales numbers for February have been released and as you can see from the graph Playstation 3 is tracking well ahead of the Xbox 360 in terms of month to month sales since launch. It’s no longer a question of if the PS3 will overtake the 360 (and Wii) but when.
The other big story coming out of the NPDs this month is the fact that Killzone 2 sold a record breaking 323,000 units in just two days of sales. Amazing.
Also, keep in mind that this is only sales data for February. With Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 coming out later this year 2009, like 2008, is yet another Year of the PS3.

I’m starting to feel pity for the PS3. It obviously can’t stand up to the other systems, it isn’t really a fair fight.
Oh well, with the amount of crow that Sony is eating this console cycle we can only have hope that the PS4 will return Sony to its former domination and quality.
Where is Wii?
With current sales numbers the ps3 will overtake the 360 in about 10 years after the 360 stops production, give or take a year. Being outsold month after month for over a year straight, it must be hard for the fanboys.
Ah, the SDF SpEds (special Education) are at it again! POS3 is DEAD LAST in the world!
VGChartz Hardware data for the period 03rd Jan 2009 to 14th Mar 2009:
Console Wii PS3 X360
Total 4,652,864 1,099,988 2,452,716
Die $ony, DIE!!! Maybe they will get it right for the POS4 in 2016, lol. By then Smartphones will have better graphics than the POS3!
LOL! That’s funny because the offical title reads “NPD: Wii and DS Destroy February”
SDF needs to pull that cock out of their butts, fart that spooge out, and actually check the facts! It begins.
Not one Sony game has topped Halo 3′s total sales.
Wii Fit on the other hand has.
How does to feel to be out done by a SCALE, Sony?
So how is your guys thought up “war” going? For fucks sake, grow up.
“Yesterday’s NPD Group sales data revealed that PlayStation 3 sales were down year-over-year. In fact they were down across the PlayStation family.”
To the people who purchased the correct version of Fallout 3, remember that The Pitt will be out Tuesday. Just a heads up.
Wow…that graph should be submitted to graphjam.com…as an example of idiocy. – A completely meaningless graph. How about one showing the proportion of unicorns to elves at the end of the rainbow?
Probability of ps3 overtaking 360 sales before 2020=> less than 1%. However most fanboys make it sound like 100%
@erik
I agree with you on Fallout 3, I can’t understand why anyone would buy the PS3 version unless they don’t have a PC to run it or don’t own a 360.
maybe cause some people can’t keep buying 3shittys in good faith that they will fix the red rings
@kanerilis
Even if the 360s hardware had/has its problems, still the fact is there is alot more good games on it than the PS3. I don’t buy a console based on who made it, more like what can I PLAY on it.
Record-breaking?
Wrath of the Lich King sold 2.8 million copies on the first day. Wait, 323,000 is record-breaking for the PS3.
The Pitt is on Tuesday and the Mythic Map Pack for Halo 3 hinted at dropping on April 9th. The PS3 sits unused in my room.
Ah well, I may actually rent Killzone 2 later.
@Kanerilis
The RROD issue has been solved. Where have you been?
Now if Sony will only fix the problem with their system. You know where the system stays off for longer than it takes to send in an old model 360 and wait to get your replacement in the mail. If a system is never turned on, it may as well be bricked.
i think in the end the ps3 will prevail. God of War 3 will be the last nail in xbox360´s coffin.
And this sales data for xbox360 ist higly flawed anyway, because millions of consoles are rrods. so i think ps3 is the most successful NEXT GENERATION console already now and it will definitively overtake xbox360 in total sales within a few months.
i think buying a 360 now is just retarded, as the production will stop mid 2010 due to low consumer demand and there wont be any new games past that date. Mark my words!
360 sales will stop when all of the mentally ill children have one so not to worry ps3 owners
360 sales will stop when all of the mentally ill children have one so not to worry ps3 owners
How is it that the PS3 is having so much trouble competing with a system with a “low consumer demand”?
Also I find it amusing that the SDF twatter posts are pulling out a bunch of Xbox titles and claiming them to be PS3 titles without so much as a scrap of evidence. Its cute, no really it is. But if you guys are so obviously desperate to play those games just buy a 360 and get it over with.
I’m trying to think of how long it has been since I’ve turned on my PS3, not counting punishing myself by playing KZ2 it has to be very well over a month. Such a waste of a system.
Oops, no Splinter Cell for Sony: http://playstation.joystiq.com/2007/05/07/ubisoft-says-splinter-cell-conviction-couldnt-be-on-ps3/
@xboxisforkids
Sure that demand for the 360 will go down eventually, only when games are stopped being made for it!
Otherwise Sony is the one that should be the ones considering a price drop to spur sales of there console. Sure they did have a sales bump from last month, but the fact is that its still too damn expensive for most people to afford (especially the way the economy is right now). Even with the great looking games coming out for the PS3 this year, it still won’t matter if they can’t do something about that price. Sure there’s been rumours of another bundle coming from them, but that doesn’t break that “$400 for a console” stigma that people have. Once they do finally drop the price to $300, then sales and that mental “stigma” will finally start to go away and that will probably in the long run actually help out with the installed base and maybe sell more games and be (maybe) competitive with the 360.
xboxisforkids: “ps3 is the most successful NEXT GENERATION console already now and it will definitively overtake xbox360 in total sales within a few months.”
Please tell me how a console that sells LESS monthly than 360 is going to overtake a 6 million gap in a few months? It’s basic math that ps3 won’t overtake 360 before 2015
Ow yea, we’re talking with ps3 fanboys. Math is all but lost on them.
@marnick
Everything is lost on PS3 fanboys.
Or on fanboys in general.
Well sorry if the red ring doesn’t concern me
The red ring doesn’t concern anyone. Its over with.
@erik
Now its the “E74″ error that is now being in the news, such as on joystiq and on Yahoo!.
Every console of current technology has its possible “error codes”, the PS3 has plenty of them. And they would be even more common if PS3s would be turned on more.
I’d love to see the source data for that graph (which was done in Excel).
Click the link erik posted. It didn’t work the way he expected it, but put in the date ranges of January 31st, 2009 to February 28th, 2009 (The closest you can get to just February sales). According to that site, TOTAL sales (globally), 819,411 PS3′s vs. 1,028,949 360′s. That is legitimate figures from real sources. Where are you getting the figures for this chart you posted?
Edit from my previous post:
After looking at more sales figures, I think I see why they are referring to the PS3 as winning the month. If you look at total sales globally from 3 years, 4 months from their launch, the PS3 technically did sell faster (17,315,036 360′s from November 5th, 2005 to March 15th, 2008 vs. 21,222,651 PS3′s from November 4th, 2006 to March 14th, 2009).
Also, Compare February 2009′s PS3 sales to February 2008′s 360 sales (giving both systems an equal time frame), the PS3 leads the 360 819,411 to 759,080 so they are TECHNICALLY right. The 360 still leads the PS3 by quite a bit (29,379,635 to 21,222,651) and has continually lead all Christmas season as well (I was too lazy to go back to before November). Here are the breakdowns since November. It’s PS3/360
January (942,292/1,201,011)
December (2.392,945/3,990,389)
November (1,244,674/1,950,071)
So anyone who claims the PS3 won this Christmas are sadly mistaken.
@The other big story coming out of the NPDs this month is the fact that Killzone 2 sold a record breaking 323,000 units in just two days of sales. Amazing.
Have you seen the way KZ2 stacks up against Gears of War 2 and Halo 3 when comparing the first week?

Hell, lets throw in Metal Gear Solid 4 and GTA4 (PS3) for good measure

Killzone 2 is doing AWFUL in comparison. What records are you referring to?
“tendonut Says:
So anyone who claims the PS3 won this Christmas are sadly mistaken.”
I believe you are confusing “mistaken” with “lying”.
http://wii.ign.com/articles/965/965898p1.html
LOL,
323,000 units in three days is not record breaking at all. Halo 3 sold millions on the first day. pwned.
