E74: The new RROD for 360?
After declaring the Xbox 360′s infamous “Red Ring of Death” hardware failure fixed, Microsoft could be in for a whole new headache.
Video games blog Joystiq.com has been researching an Xbox hardware error that, it claims, appears to have been sharply increasing in prevalence since the so-called New Xbox Experience upgrade — which overhauled the console’s user interface — debuted in November 2008. The error, which manifests itself as a black screen with the code “E74,” is thought to be caused by failing video hardware. Most importantly, it isn’t covered by the extended warranty Microsoft introduced after the last round of failures, and afflicted gamers must pay over $100 for a repair.
Mainstream media source: Yahoo.com
Looks like the new RROD is here. Will 360′s hardware troubles ever end? We’ll keep you posted at SDF as this new epidemic for 360 hardware failures story developes.

Like the PS3 doesn’t have error codes, please. Anyways if I like a system enough I will stick with it even with hardware problems. Which is why I’ve owned 4 PS2′s. The 360 can’t hold a candle in comparison to that thing’s failure rate.
I have to second erok on this one. Sony is notorious for having the worst console in history. Microsoft has extended his warranty but sony wouldn’t even fix a broken ps2 if you used thirdparty memorycards. It wouldn’t be far fetched to claim that of the 130m ps2s at least 30m are replacements. As erik said, the 360 can’t hold a candle to the ps2 failure rate.
On a sidenote, I believe the big news about massive ps3 failures is inbound sometime soon. On several forums already there are lots of reports about YLOD (yellow light of doom) so it won’t be long before critical mass is reached and the bandwagen will run off.
Quantity, over quality eh, SDF? I remember when your stories were monumentally stupid, now they’re just annoying. It begins.
Also http://www.n4g.com/industrynews/NewsCom-298143.aspx?CT=1
@seven2s .. if there that annoying, stop reading. i find it interesting that a few hate this site but find the time to comment.
as for everyone else M$ was FORCED by the court to extend the warranty. it wasn’t out of the ‘goodness of there heart’ the warranty was extended. lol. if it was up to them they leave all you guys high and dry. the Ps3 may have a random error code but they never prevented the system from working, most the error codes were DNS errors that were fixed by re-connected the net/modem.. M$ already stated that anyone getting th E74 error code to call in. It is an issue. especially when you boot up the system and your whole screen turns black with that code. The error codes on the PS3 appear rarely and like i said its DNS errors not ‘video hardware failure’ and wouldn’t prevent you from playing or doing something else.
@marnick the YLOD doom comment! lol get real ! there 2% of the PS3 users vs 360 35% failure rate. its funny how in 5 months i heard of 2 PS3 get the YLOD unlike the 360 never ending RROD and E74 code. Im on almost every game forum and rarely see any YLOD articles. your probably the type of person that looks for bad news on the PS3 so you can feel as your system not in shambles, regardless of the fact your blinded by your master M$.
@seven2s
Oh come on, that n4g article is a joke. Where is the info on the “Somewhat satisfied” option? I work with data like this on a daily basis at the office and rarely does anyone ever put “Very Satisfied” on surveys. It seems very misleading in favor of the 360.
@seven2s
as for your article linking the very satisfied people of Japan with the 360..I don’t mean to state the blatantly obvious… but perhaps that’s because the tiny amount of people who have purchased a 360 in Japan either REALLY wanted one, or bought it for a specific game. This poll is like asking a crack addict how satisfied he is with what he just snorted? 360 will never over take Japan. Good sales 1 month because of that squareenix RPG than back to the slump.
@seven2s
Do you sniff Hans’ butt all day? You butt pirate! Your such a $ony fanturd! I’ll go through 20 360s before buying another POS3! I have had three POS3 crap machines (the last 2 had the Flu-ray drives die on me). Between that and YLODs, POS3 has it’s share of hardware failures as well.
Now get out of your mom’s basement and get out in the sun, you must be pastey white by now!
@marnick
I must be lucky then, I still got my original PS2 and its still works, but I had to crack it open to fix it though. Thankfully it was a really easy fix, all what had to be done was to reapply grease to the rails that the lens moves upon, because it built up on the ends of the rails, so I took a qtip and spread it out and it worked just fine and I haven’t had to do it again since.
I just had this exact thing happen to my Xbox a week ago. I was so f**king pissed off! It’s total bulls**t that Microsoft won’t cover it under the extended warranty. We just traded one hardware failure for another. I’ve owned an NES, an SNES, a Genesis, a Saturn, a PS1, an N64, a Gamecube, a PS2, an Xbox, a Wii and an Xbox 360, and the Xbox 360 is the ONLY system I’ve ever had die on me. My original Xbox still works to this day, but my 360 dies after 1 year. Whenever they drop the price of the PS3, I’m buying one. F**k Microsoft. Sound like we need another class action lawsuit to make Microsoft acknowledge this “new” RROD.
It must be a real kick in the ass to the Sony fanboys that the PS3 is barely keeping neck and neck with a system with so many supposed mechanical problems. It goes to show that people want a good system that may break down, than a stable shitty one.
Hey maybe if Microsoft starts packing C4 around the processors of the 360 THEN maybe the PS3 would have a chance. Then again, probably not.
@erik
You are too funny. Its funny that you can buy 4 PS2s and not think twice about it (because of games), then go buy a 360 and say “its okay its got good games!” and nevermind the failure rate. On top of that, you blast Sony for making a “stable” console (and contrary to what you say, it does have good games on it).
What good games?
What good games?
I’ve searched the ps2.5 library and there’s maybe 2 or 3 games that moderatly interest me. 2 or 3 moderate games don’t warrant a 400€ investment, not in these economic times.
Besides, I have a feeling in my stomach that sony might cut support for ps2.5 any time to pave the way for the ps4 (kinda like xbox1). I like gambling but not with that kind of money.
i dont understand who could possibly be dumb enough to buy this horrible system
@Marnick
Calling the PS3 the “PS2.5″ is sort of insulting to the good system that the PS2 is. Really I prefer to think of the PS3 as the spiritual successor to the Phillips CD-i. The Phillips CD-i 1.5.
@erik
I see what you did there, but lets kinda not talk about how Phillips and Nintendo lead Sony to create the PS brand.
If anything the PS3 more resembles the Gamecube this cycle more than anything. Don’t forget the CD-i was a complete and utter flop, even with some Nintendo properties behind it.
Yes, I agree InfaredChimera. The Phillips CD-i did try to be a multimedia machine but failed at the games, yes just like the PS3. What that isn’t what you said at all and you weren’t agreeing with me? Oh well.
@InfraredChimera and erik
you are aware that the 360 does have streaming content and multimedia capabilities as well. for you to bash the PS3 and not look that the 360 has some features as a media extender is funny. dont forget that the cdi had 0 games. its no where on the league as the cdi in terms of failure. Fanboys in the end will say anything to feel Superior. the 360 momentum has ended.. GAME OVER MAN. Let me point something out..
every Sony system started out slow and took a huge leap in 2 years overtaking the other systems. This Gen race is far from over and the 360 is pretty much a fish out of water in terms of games. This years a prime example of how the 360 is dead. They have nothing, Bungies gone and Gears Of War is your only item and even that isn’t phenomenal. Just like with every system PS1 and 2 the PS3 was difficult to program for.. NOT ANYMORE.. as developers are flat out saying the systems an incredible machine. use logic vs Fan boy rumors, read articles on different sites, not select news. Every time i read something about the 360 its payed DLC or muti-system games, NOTHING innovative or new. Maybe if M$ smart enough they’d pay Sony for some exclusives.. since Sony’s the only company innovating new IP’s. btw the WII doesn’t count
@InfraredChimera
i respect your points but bashing the PS3 than Bashing the 360 looks like your just throwing opinions out vs make up your mind on a system. im pretty sure the mods wont kick you out for hating the PS3
“Calling the PS3 the “PS2.5″ is sort of insulting to the good system that the PS2 is. Really I prefer to think of the PS3 as the spiritual successor to the Phillips CD-i. The Phillips CD-i 1.5.”
Truth, you are doing it right…fag! <- I have to, I can’t go making exceptions.
I call it the ps2.5 because it’s just an incremental upgrade over the ps2. A bit better graphics (but not alot) and nothing worth talking about to improve games (online, achievements, motion sensing, all tacked on in a horrible way)
I don’t pay 400€ for an incremental upgrade, I’d want a real innovating system like the 360
And by using incremental upgrades: let’s call the most recent killzone, killzone 0.9, cause it’s even worse than the first (says enough)
@marnick
So when did you notice that EVERY console cycle is usually the same improvements. Sure graphics and processors gets faster and better, but otherwise than that not much changes everytime.
I don’t consider the PS3 to be an incremental upgrade over the PS2 at all.
No infrared. I’ll give you a little timeline, starting at the very first generation
1st generation: the start of videogames as a home entertainment possibility
2nd gen: possibility of multiple games per console
this is where the videogame crash occured. If you’re too young to remember this: look it up, it was an important era in history because in the
3rd gen: nintendo proved that videogames were still able to produce profit, hence ressurecting this hobby.
4th gen: all in all didn’t have too much new stuff appart from couch multiplayer that didn’t come from arcade halls
5th gen: the introduction of 3D, sticks, rumble and more which changed almost every game franchise (all copied by sony). Some for the better (mario, zelda) some for the worse (mortal combat)
6th gen: dreamcast and xbox ventured into online with xbox succeeding and proving that both shooters and online were feasible on the consoles (copied by sony in a failed way)
7th gen: xbox360 expands upon the idea of online with arcade games (copied by sony and nintendo) and an extensive demo/dlc marketplace (copied by sony), achievements, cross invites and more (all copied by sony in an inferior way.
Nintendo introduced a whole new way of gaming with motion controls. Again copied horribly by sony.
So which new things did sony bring to the table? Optical discs, although most professionals consider memory cards superior. They did introduce massive hardware failures with the ps2 which unfortunatly microsoft copied. The ps3 introduced an overpriced and underpowered (compared to the one year older 360) piece of hardware.
Did they introduce anything new this gen? Anything that changed gaming compared to 1997? There’s nothing distinguisheable about the ps3 and that’s what makes it into the ps2.5
@marnick
let me point a few flaws on your statement.. Sega Saturn than the Dreamcast cast had online gaming way before the xbox. the Net’s been around for along time and a system using it isn’t revolutionizing, its adding to the experience of gaming. Mostly every company adds on basic things like rumble controllers etc.
1rst person to add CD from my understanding was the CDi but it sucked in games THAN SONY.
2nd Sony added DVD in the PS3 than everyone else followed.
Now Blueray.. which more can be done..unfortunately developing for multiple systems handicaps the maker due to space on other systems. Unless there 3rd party.
Its been stated many times by developers that the hardware in the PS3 is BETTER but steep learning curve. hey, its 2009! since 2008 things are going up, now down in terms of game development and PS3 hardware use. for you to say that Sony’s copying DLC is funny because thats been around as an option for PC gaming since forever. Anytime the nets involved and gaming DLC will follow thats not ‘copying’.
The Phillips CDi had more software for self development and almost no games.. THATS why they went under. Any site has stated that including wikipedia and MANY MORE.
Sony as a company has developed many things not even related to gaming that is pointless to even introduce on here because someone will say ‘its not related to games’ but Sony has had many and more first party games out and coming out than other competitors. from the strange LBP to KZ2. they cater to everyone not just 1 type of gamer. While M$ uses Embrace, extend and extinguish tactics. which means: describe their strategy for entering product categories involving widely used standards, extending those standards with proprietary capabilities, and then using those differences to disadvantage its competitors.
sony’s gaming divisions is going up not down..
So far I’m pretty pleased with the new download for Fallout 3. Though I will probably play it more once the bugs are ironed out. I have full confidence that Bethsada WILL be able to fix the problems.
Its just a shame that you can’t bring any of your companions to explore Pittsburgh with you. I would love to have Fawkes there to mow down some wildmen with his laser gatling.
No companions in The Pitt? Eh. Oh well.
Hopefully they’ll fix it up and put it back on the Marketplace soon.
@marnick
Thanks for the history lesson that I didn’t need, I was making a general remark about the “console cycles”.
I can tell you what Sony brought to the videogame market and it has nothing to do with hardware at all. What they did bring is a sense of “cool” to the public. By that I mean is that videogames where no longer looked as a “nerdy” hobby by the general public.
What Sony did bring, was that the PS1 wasn’t a “videogame machine”, but more of a “appliance” but it hooked up to the tv.
I could keep on going but I think you get the gest of it.
No I don’t, the change from nerdy to cool was bound to happen in that time. I don’t know how old you are but I’ve been a gamer for 2 decades and seen this industry grow from garage hackers into multimillion bussiness. At a certain moment it was inevitable that games would become mainstream. It happened with books, radio and video. Don’t need to be Nostradamus to see it coming.
As a matter of fact this was something Sega was working on for years until they fizzled out due to Sony taking away the spotlights from their splendid machine Dreamcast.
So basically sony just joined at the exact right moment and killed the one company that they stole this idea from. Good for them, but I fail to see what they actually did for gaming. Give me one single feature that defines gaming as we know it today that was brought to the table by sony?
And the “cool” aspect has run amok with the PS3. An overpriced heap which makes yuppie kids think they are cool because of the price tag alone. Other pieces of crap which have fallen into the “cool” category are the iMac. A colorful computer which is designed to match your decor if you are into neon vomit. But to any serious computer user it was a joke.
@marnick
Maybe cool was the wrong word, maybe I should go for “tone” instead. While the PC gaming side of things had many mature titles (not talking about violent mature) long before PS. The PS1 did bring a more “adult-oriented” theme to games than what sega/nintendo where doing back in the mid-90s. What sony did is break away from that “games are for kids” stigma and got those kids (myself included) who grew up on nes/genesis to go for more “mature” gaming experiences, and know what, it worked for the most part (on getting me to buy it anyways, and yet I still bought my N64 and Dreamcast).
What did sony bring to console gaming? While my answer will be a dissapointment and not what your probably looking for, but here it is. CD-Rom based consoles. Sure we had the Sega-CD, CD-i, Jaguar CD, and 3do. But the one thing they all had in common, to damn expensive and a complete flop.
Now that I answered your question and now its my turn: I figure we are about the same age (roughly around 30), so why do you hate a fucking piece of plastic so damned much, it hasen’t hurt you in a physical or emotional way, it didn’t fuck your girlfriend/wife, and it hasen’t killed your mom. So being “adult” you despise something that basically plays videogames?
So whatever your answers is, I got one for you if you can’t think of one: Grow up. There is more things to despise in the world than a videogame console (such as AIG exec’s getting bonuses).
@erik
Have you ever gotten laid and your mom giving birth to you doesn’t count.
@InfaredChimera
Nothing to add? Thought not.
@erik
Are you related to Rush Limbaugh in anyway?
Oh god not the ps2.4 argument again. Get over it guys
Infrared: please read my posts before saying stupid things like sony gave us CD-rom based media. Anyone with basic understandings of electronics know that cartridges are better for gaming due to loading times and sturdiness (no scratches, no moving objects).
The earlier cd models were expensive because technology was expensive. Again, ps1 was at exact the right time but then again, that’s just being lucky. You should realise that next gen most consoles will probably use memory cards again due to rapidly dropping prices.
While I do realise that nintendo has always had a stigma of being childish, we all know it hasn’t been since as early as the NES. Games like ghouls n ghosts and castlevania aren’t exactly childfriendly. Neither were the “sega does what nintendon’t” ads. Maybe Sony changed the overall image but imo that was a shift that was occuring anyways.
However the shift to analogs, motion, online and more were DECISIONS which is what distinguishes innovating companies like nintendo, sega and microsoft from copying companies like Sony. You might like to deny this but just check the 100 iterations of the sony controller and name one single feature that was on there before any other console.
In short, if all innovations were up to sony we’d still be playing in 2.5D with the original controller, without online, without ingame XMB, without any additional form of immersion (no pun intended, rumble, motion, …). You know this is true and that’s why you don’t answer my posts but give a spin to something unrelated.
Also: I don’t really hate or despise the ps3 as such, it’s more a dislike due to Sony acting like asses (2nd job, rumble is last gen, blu-ray blabla) combined with a subpar console both in hardware and software. It’s too easy to diss on the ps3 because frankly there isn’t much objective one can say to defend the damn system.
Trust me, I tried, I joined a forum intending to defend the ps3, just to learn about it. Instead of using arguments like I do when talking about xbox or wii I had to resort to fanboy tactics. That’s when I learned that someone defending the ps3 is basically a fanboy no matter what.
And I guess that’s the whole point of this site, extrapolating the ps3 arguments to prove the silliness of their ideas.
@Kanerilis
If it makes you feel better I don’t think that the PS3 is the PS2.5, more like the PS.5
I would only feel better if someone found you in a ditch with a rumble controller up you arse
A rumble controller. That thing that Sony was so egotistical they thought they were better than, only to have to swallow their pride months later? That thing?
@marnick
No, I never said that sony was responsible for CD based media, but what I said was, “CD-Rom based consoles”. Not only that the 2nd computer my parents owned came with a CD-ROM drive and that was back in 91.
Here is a part from the wikipedia portion of the PS1 “legacy” which also says it better than me:
The success of the PlayStation is widely believed to have influenced the demise of the cartridge-based home console. While not the first system to utilize an optical disc format, it was the first success story, and ended up going head-to-head with the last major home console to rely on proprietary cartridges—the Nintendo 64.
Also you state that cartridges are better with “faster load times and studiness”, which are in all regards is true. But how would you feel if a game cost $200+ per game (remember how much Neo-Geo games cost?). So sure we could still have cartridge based games and pay up the ass for them, or we could have a cd based game and only pay $50 for them, its up to you, but personally I rather pay $50.
“In short, if all innovations were up to sony we’d still be playing in 2.5D with the original controller, without online, without ingame XMB, without any additional form of immersion (no pun intended, rumble, motion, …). The keyword is “IF” everything was up to sony, but it wasn’t, so don’t worry about it.
Finally here is something objective about all the consoles in this generation; They all have there positives and negatives. Sure there’s things that keep each one of these console from truly being great, but the good thing is that we have such a wide variety to choose from, and games to play on them. Imho to limit just yourself to one console this cycle (unless thats all you can afford unfortunatly, but maybe in the short term future it will be possible to get another console) from all the different games that they can offer, is just a shame really.
^^^ unless your erik and thinks that playing a certain console is the same as getting hit by a car, then your just being a dick.
“Also you state that cartridges are better with “faster load times and studiness”, which are in all regards is true. Games don’t cost 50€, ps3 games cost upwards to 75€ (i’ve seen it at places) due to the extreme cost of blu-rays. NDS games on the other hand comfortable sell for 20-30 euro compared to 40+€ for psp games. Again you didn’t read my post. N64 games never cost more than 50€.
At the time though discbased was easier for devs and that’s what gave sony the edge, third party support. With rapidly dropping hardware prices we will see 64gig flashcards for a tenner in the near future which will mark the return of cartridgebased consoles. After all, consoles are for playing games, not for waiting at loading times.
“unless your erik and thinks that playing a certain console is the same as getting hit by a car, then your just being a dick.”
You fail at memory recall. I didn’t say that playing a certain console is same as getting hit by a car. I said that sometimes some things in life do not need to be tested with first hand experience. It was in regards to some games where one just use the information at hand to draw a conclusion without playing it. But this goes for ALL consoles. Playing Halo Wars is not needed to know to know it sucks, yes like getting hit by a car.
@marnick
Actually N64 games did go higher than $50, While most games didn’t there was exceptions such as the first run of LoZ: OoT which did reach $80 and also I believe Conkers Bad Fur Day was also a expensive game as well.
Well if you don’t believe me go here:
http://www.videogames.yahoo.com/printview_article?eid=1091504
Also you forgot the about the SquareEnix NDS tax, there games “new” sell for about $40 when they first come out as well, heres another link for you again:
http://www.ebgames.com/Browse/Search.aspx?N=134+106

I totally agree with you on that. No bullshit right there, but I do think that downloading is the way to go sadly (I like to own a physical copy of a game anyday).
fucking moderation
N64 games did go higher than $50,
Donkey Kong 64, Top Gear Rally 2, WWF Wrestlemania 2000, and Turok Rage Wars where all around $60 brand new in 99.
Also SquareEnix games for the NDS do tend to sell around $34.99-$39.99 brand new as well. So I just debunked what you said earlier, also I don’t know the exchange rate from dollars to euros (I believe there about the same the last time I recall), so that could have a impact as well. Also here in the states most 360 and PS3 games do sell at the same price($59.99), unless there “budget” games or special editions.
The exchange rate for dollars/euros is about 1.4 dollars for one euro. However the greedy bastards just use a 1:1 conversion to squeeze out every eurocent out of our pocket, resulting in 40% upmarket prices.
So you pay 59.99$ for a game, we pay 59.99€ for the same game, which is actually more than 70$. However the real prices for ps3 games vary between 65-75€ while prices for 360 games vary between 60-65€.
@InfraredChimera
N64 games went for more than $60 occasionally. I bought Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire when it first came out and it went for $70. A few other games were at that price point as well. It wasn’t common, but it DID happen.
Now it’s true, cartridges were a hell of a lot faster and reliable than CDs, but the downfalls were much bigger than just cost. The average N64 cartridge varied from 4Mbit to 64Mbit in capacity. Now this is MegaBIT, not byte. So the largest cartridge, a 64Mbit cartridge was about 8MB. Thats it. 8 Megabytes. The average CD is 650MB. THIS is why Squaresoft’s FF series and other big games went to the PSX. Square wanted a very cinematic experience with their games and this was just not possible on an 8MB cartridge. Games had to be dumbed down to a MIDI soundtrack and FMVs were basically impossible. You can’t do cartridge swapping like you can with DVDs, so there was no way around this.
@tendonut
I agree with you totally.
I don’t see Sony’s hardware problems being fixed anytime soon either.
The problem I speak of is being in dead last in world-wide sales. Their lead in Japan is like the 360′s was temporary. The falling numbers prove that.
@Trivium300
“i dont understand who could possibly be dumb enough to buy this horrible system”
I could not agree with you more, the POS3 SUCKS!
But it’s a decent movie player!
You faggots still post here?
Christ, I guess the “rich get richer while the poor get poorer” applies to stupidity as well.
Oh well, to show how huge of a problem E74 is: I give you this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08QUQtBSpyU
*cough* yeah
