PS3 Slim sells over 600K worldwide in first week

In Europe, some regions saw as much as a tenfold increase in PS3 sales (admittedly, sales had been low the previous week as consumers anticipated the new model launch) – around 250,000 units were sold in “other regions” (Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia etc) according to our preliminary data. In Japan, reports have already been independently confirmed from Famitsu magazine of over 150,000 units sold – twice as much as the previous best week for PS3. Sales in Americas also saw a large increase, over 125,000 units according to preliminary data (although this could be higher as more info comes in).

Stay tuned for more data as it comes in… and please note that this data is still preliminary at this stage. We can say with a fair amount of certainty that between 500,000 and 600,000 units were sold but will not know the exact figure until all of the finalised data is in.

Update – we have already upgraded the figure to 500-600k as all pointers now suggest the figure to be comfortably over half a million.

Xbox fans doubted a revolution was coming.  Xbox fans doubted the existence of the new PS3.

This time, it truly begins.

    And the Sony “revolution” starts.

    It only took 3 years ¬_¬;;

    Have fun trying to catch up to the Wii. Hell, you’ve still got a 6 million console gap to close on the 360. Your sales would have to remain this high for the better part of 6 months. Dream big

    Oh, and first :P

  2. GT5

  3. VGcharts? REALLY?
    So you just started this thing with the least credible numbers source on the web?
    Yawn…By October this will have been another footnote in the long list of “it begins” false alarms.

  4. Also, lose the religious photoshop. You little jap cocksuckers are going to offend someone.

  5. Also I’d like to point out that this site is not ad free.

    Not unless SDF has their own brand of shit flavored chicken.

  6. I just might pick one up. Maybe.

  7. So the system is smaller, yay? Any games worth playing yet? No? Wake me up when the PS4 gets here.

  8. This is good news for Sony, but I have this feeling that the 500k people were just the people waiting for the price drop before they bought their systems. Yes, 500k is great, but it needs to keep up. It’s a damn shame Sony had to ditch their ego before they could make any headlines with system sales.

    Basically, do not count your chickens before they hatch. It would be great to see sales pick up (bringing more people to the online community which is still seriously lacking).

    I still sense no revolution. The generation has already peaked and if anything, is winding down. History has shown that once you are on top, you stay there. The Xbox really became epic near the end, but still couldn’t dethrone the PS2. It’s just not gonna happen. But credit to SDF for finally quoting something instead of saying “our sources”. Helps the credibility along.

  9. GT5 is King!

  10. Tsk tsk tsk.
    From the latest NPD.
    * Nintendo DS – 552,900
    * Wii – 277,400
    * Xbox 360 – 215,400
    * PlayStation 3 – 210,000
    * PSP – 140,300
    * PlayStation 2 – 105,900
    I guess it just didn’t being after all…

  11. @seven2s

    What is the context of that? August sales? Numbers since the actual launch of the PS3 Slim? They are too high to be September.

  12. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/technologybrierdudleysblog/2009842390_npd_video_game_sales_plunge_in_1.html

    A 72% jump in PS3 sales? That’s pretty damn good.

    Also, now that I looked it up, those figures were for August 2009 you posted there seven2s. That’s pretty impressive. Somehow managed to not top the 360 though. Lets see if they can keep it up for two months straight….

  13. @erik. Where are all the wii games? I havent touched my wii since SSBB. I thought about punch out wii but even that is meh compared with the original. Wake me up when nintendo decides to make games for gamers again.

    As for sony selling more consoles….. well thats what a price cut and annoucement of flagship titles (god of war 3 specifically) will do. It shouldnt surprise anyone that the ps3 is managing to sell well. Sony has aquired many respected developers throughout the years. It took them a while, but who really didnt see this coming?

    @green goblin 50 cent could sell 100 million records tomorrow but that wouldnt make him a good rapper. You should think about that a little. sales dont mean anything to gamers.

  14. @Spooky205

    I don’t know, I don’t own a Wii. I haven’t played my PS3 since InFamous came out. And even then for only like two weeks.

  15. Of course the PS3 is selling better than it did a week before the Slim came out. They were out of stock the week before the Slim came out.

  16. So a whole bunch of Japs, who are known for buying EVERY “new” gadget that comes out, have purchased the FailStation Slim, eh? Big deal…

    If the PS3 had backwards-compatibility (and decent games), I might be interested.
    But it doesn’t, so I’m not.

    I’m really enjoying seeing SONY struggling in it’s death-throes. EAT SHIT, you lying, greedy, bloated, weaselly motherfuckers.

  17. Apparently Sony isn’t the innocent bunch of japs everyone thinks that they are. Warning parts of the link the news story are on aren’t safe for work, but it’s a story from a dev of how Sony strong arms devs into forcing them into taking profits from MS games and making Sony games. Pretty shady business from Super Okay Japanese Company Happy fun number one! huh? http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2009/09/16/microsoft-funds-ps3-game-development/

  18. Hmmm it seems this is only wrong when Microsoft does it…but when Sony does it, it’s okay?
    http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/sony-tackles-bbc-over-ps3-failure-report

  19. $ony sucks! They do make a great bluray player in the POS3 though.

    This holiday belongs to the 360 again, especially when they bundle the wifi adapter with the elite bundle! Now noone can complain the 360 doesn’t include wifi or hard drive. Did I mention the 360 has a great games library and can STILL play games from the previous gen? POS3 can’t! But it does have a good movie library!

  20. Wi-fi for a game console is sort of stupid. I’m glad that Microsoft made it an option rather than being like Sony and forcing yet another useless function on the consumer and making them pick up the bill.

    So the 360 having a wi-fi bundle is just sort of useless.

  21. InfraredChimera Says:

    @erik

    Well wi-fi is useless to some but convienant to others. Not everyone wants wire going through there house to have a internet conncection or play there console games online. While (at the time) it was good that MS made it optional thing to buy, but even at that time when the 360 was launched wi-fi was more of a luxury to connect to the internet, but now we have multible devices that use wi-fi to work or go on the internet with.
    So while you might think its “useless” for MS not to have a wi-fi adapter built in or bundled, but in the end it makes the PS3 look like a better deal when there sitting side by side to the average consumer.
    And personally I wish I had a wi-fi adapter for my 360, because the less cords for me the better.

  22. yet another huge victory for sony, now every true gamer will own a ps3 and there is no reason for 360s anymore they might as well discontinue them

  23. @InfaredChimera

    Play an online game through a wi-fi? You are fucking with me right. Maybe next you could fill your living room with molasses to really slow things down for you to unplayable levels.

    @Triviium3000000000000000

    For this to be “another huge victory” for Sony wouldn’t they have had to have previous victories? And this really hasn’t done much to repair Sony’s image or lack of games.

    I didn’t turn on my PS3 all of last month, and I don’t see turning it on next month. And I’ve not heard of any upcoming releases either that will make me want to turn it on either.

    Its a pretty useless dust magnet.

  24. InfraredChimera Says:

    @erik

    I really don’t have a problem with wi-fi for gaming in general (from what I experienced) on my connection at all but just for the sake of it I’m wired for the 360 (but not for the PS3 or Wii, but not really by choice on the 360).
    And not one to pass up a opportunity to have a bit of fun at some elses expense, “Its a pretty useless dust magnet.” you where referring to your dick right?!? (I’m just messing with ya, but ya know someone will slam ya for it eventually, and it might as well be me)

  25. At least I didn’t have to get a second job to obtain my penis.

  26. @erik

    The wireless card in a PS3 is 802.11g. That’s 54Mb/s. The standard cable internet connection is between 7Mb/s and 10MB/s. Wifi for gaming is not a problem unless you are LANing with large file transfers. The internet connection causes a bottleneck long before your wireless connection. Wifi latency is also between 5 and 10ms, nothing compared to the 100ms+ latency of your everyday cable connection. So trying to find a downfall of having a wireless-enabled console compared to one without is rather futile.

  27. @Infrared: you might not see any lag on your wifi but do realise that you’re ghosting on other people’s screen. It’s easy to spot ghosters and on serious shooter wars anyone with over 100 ping gets kicked. That includes everyone with wifi by default (ping 200 average)

    But hey, you’re playing kz2, can’t expect much of quality gaming from such people…

  28. @marnick

    Before I submitted my last post, I wanted to confirm my latency figures for WiFi. I pinged my gateway for 20 seconds and the latency never peaked over 10ms/s. Unless you have some serious connection strength problems, wifi connections should never have pings of 200.

  29. Err, 10ms, not 10ms/s. Derp. I was doing it from my iBook which happens to be running Gentoo until I get my hands on some OSX restore discs…

  30. @tendonut

    I’ll stick with my wired connection thank you. The only time I use a wi-fi connection for anything it is for my old laptop that I use just for IRC and web browsing.

    So even though my PS3 (that I rarely play) has a wi-fi I still choose to opt it out for the cable.

  31. I would really rather break out some tools and drill the hell out of my walls and floors before I bothered with wi-wi.

  32. The trolling in these posts are top notch. 10/10 everybody.

  33. Log in to any game such as guild wars or counter-strike. Go sit in a room away from the router and check your ping in said game. You’ll easily hit the 150+ mark.

    So stop being ignorant. You guys KNOW that wifi is bad for gaming but still you try to prove your point with skewed argumennts. Such is the mind of the fanboy…

  34. The only time I use wifi on my laptop is when I’m sitting right next to the router and cba. Yes I get 20ms in this idealized instance. However move 1 room and the numbers go into the red digits. That’s why I always have a 30m lancable in my bag.

  35. I have to chime in here about the Wi-Fi issue.

    Do you people that think Wi-Fi is really THAT bad for gaming, have ever used a good router? While I do believe that the first choice is to have a hardwired Ethernet connection, for some people that just isn’t possible, really. It isn’t possible for them to cut holes in their walls and run cable from upstairs to downstairs, or to the other side of the house.

    I have been using Wi-Fi for PC and PS3 gaming for quite some time, and it isn’t as bad as you think it is, though Ethernet is the BEST way. Used to be a gamer on WON servers and Steam. Yes, I won’t get the occasional lag spike, but, running Ethernet wasn’t a option for me. I am even downstairs from my router and never had any issues in my PS3 gaming experience, and a big Socom player. I ask people sometimes if my voice is cutting in or out, or my character is jumping all over the place, and guess what, nope.

    Yes, depending on the router and how far away you are from it, you will have a slight increase in latency, but it’s something you most likely wouldn’t even see. Wi-Fi technology is advancing, and it’s getting a lot better, from a couple to a few years ago.

    In my opinion, people that say Wi-Fi is HORRIBLE for gaming, are just being ignorant. Yes, there are downsides, but for some people, these downsides don’t even matter, considering they don’t have to run mass amount of cable and deface their house.

  36. Everything in my house is wired with the exception of my laptop and my Wii. The only reason my PS3 is wired is because I ran two drops to my TV area when I networked my house a good 7 years ago. It is really not necessary. The drops are being occupied by my 360 and my PS3. My network consists of a dedicated Smoothwall gateway, a 16-port unmanaged Linksys switch, my Fedora multipurpose server, and my Cisco AP (plus all the machines on the network itself). The benefit of keeping my PS3 wired is I stream a LOT of videos/movies from my Fedora server (running MediaTomb) and my Gentoo desktop and when the PS3 WAS wireless, tehre would be a 3-5 second hiccup in the video once every 20 minutes or so. Streaming video over wireless is admittably lacking, but when I host LAN parties, there is rarely an issue with a few mobile users grabbing my wireless network until we start file sharing.

    @telzon

    My PS3, Wii, and laptop are all on a wi-fi connection and the only thing ain’t is my 360 (I refuse to give MS money for a overpriced wifi adapter). I never had a serious problem with my connection though.

  38. Remind me never to play with you ghosters. Ofcourse you guys don’t have any problems with it because it makes you play better. People can’t hit someone with 200ms latency unless they are trail the enemy…

    So why aren’t lanparties all wireless these days, considering that leeching isn’t legal? Simple reason being that it is impossible to host a serious competition on wireless. It gimps the stats.

  39. I might connect a Wii through wi-fi. Those old NES games are tiny as far as data size. Even wi-fi could handle that.

  40. @InfraredChimera

    Good to hear another fellow gamer that is happy playing online games with Wi-Fi. No issues with my PS3 or laptop.

    Recently started getting back in to Quake 3 and Quake live on my laptop, don’t have a Rig anymore, and haven’t had any lag spikes as of yet. (can’t play a whole lot because Steam has screwed up a lot of games, can’t even get a decent framerate in CS 1.6 with a Core2Duo 1.5Ghz, 2GB, and a X3100, Source runs a little better for some strange reason and took Vista off my laptop. HL and CS with WON servers on a Pentium 2 or 3 with decent framerates anyone?)

    In my opinion, I personally see wireless getting pretty much just as good as a hardwired connection, granted the technology is there, and IT IS getting there.

    @telzon

    I just found my copy of Quake 3 this past weekend while cleaning my basement and also with that No One Lives Forever ( I never played the sequel unfortunatly). I used to play Quake 3 a quite a bit back in the day and with a little bit of Unreal Tournament. Since the laptop is technically my wifes PC, I get the old piece of crap PC BUT since its running XP and isn’t dead yet playing games from 7-9 years ago isn’t a problem, especially when I need my Diablo 2 fix.

  42. @marnick
    “So why aren’t lanparties all wireless these days, considering that leeching isn’t legal”

    Because when you have a high number of wireless clients on a single AP, latency DOES become a problem. Instead of one single wireless client connecting through a wired network to the server, you have 20+ wireless clients connecting to another wireless server, thus requiring more throughout on the wireless connection itself between the AP and the server. Also, every computer in existance nowadays has at least an ethernet port, while wireless is still a luxury.

  43. Damnit, I should be proofreading this. I meant you need more THROUGHPUT between the wireless AP and the wireless server.

  44. Good work Sony.
    Maybe Sony learnt there lesson with high prices.

    OOPS I forgot the PSPgo is still a ripoff.
