Damnit, I should be proofreading this. I meant you need more THROUGHPUT between the wireless AP and the wireless server.

@marnick
"So why aren’t lanparties all wireless these days, considering that leeching isn’t legal"

Because when you have a high number of wireless clients on a single AP, latency DOES become a problem. Instead of one single wireless client connecting through a wired network to the server, you have 20+ wireless clients connecting to another wireless server, thus requiring more throughout on the wireless connection itself between the AP and the server. Also, every computer in existance nowadays has at least an ethernet port, while wireless is still a luxury.

I just found my copy of Quake 3 this past weekend while cleaning my basement and also with that No One Lives Forever ( I never played the sequel unfortunatly). I used to play Quake 3 a quite a bit back in the day and with a little bit of Unreal Tournament. Since the laptop is technically my wifes PC, I get the old piece of crap PC BUT since its running XP and isn't dead yet playing games from 7-9 years ago isn't a problem, especially when I need my Diablo 2 fix.

Good to hear another fellow gamer that is happy playing online games with Wi-Fi. No issues with my PS3 or laptop.

Recently started getting back in to Quake 3 and Quake live on my laptop, don't have a Rig anymore, and haven't had any lag spikes as of yet. (can't play a whole lot because Steam has screwed up a lot of games, can't even get a decent framerate in CS 1.6 with a Core2Duo 1.5Ghz, 2GB, and a X3100, Source runs a little better for some strange reason and took Vista off my laptop. HL and CS with WON servers on a Pentium 2 or 3 with decent framerates anyone?)

In my opinion, I personally see wireless getting pretty much just as good as a hardwired connection, granted the technology is there, and IT IS getting there.

I might connect a Wii through wi-fi. Those old NES games are tiny as far as data size. Even wi-fi could handle that.

Remind me never to play with you ghosters. Ofcourse you guys don't have any problems with it because it makes you play better. People can't hit someone with 200ms latency unless they are trail the enemy...

So why aren't lanparties all wireless these days, considering that leeching isn't legal? Simple reason being that it is impossible to host a serious competition on wireless. It gimps the stats.

My PS3, Wii, and laptop are all on a wi-fi connection and the only thing ain't is my 360 (I refuse to give MS money for a overpriced wifi adapter). I never had a serious problem with my connection though.

Everything in my house is wired with the exception of my laptop and my Wii. The only reason my PS3 is wired is because I ran two drops to my TV area when I networked my house a good 7 years ago. It is really not necessary. The drops are being occupied by my 360 and my PS3. My network consists of a dedicated Smoothwall gateway, a 16-port unmanaged Linksys switch, my Fedora multipurpose server, and my Cisco AP (plus all the machines on the network itself). The benefit of keeping my PS3 wired is I stream a LOT of videos/movies from my Fedora server (running MediaTomb) and my Gentoo desktop and when the PS3 WAS wireless, tehre would be a 3-5 second hiccup in the video once every 20 minutes or so. Streaming video over wireless is admittably lacking, but when I host LAN parties, there is rarely an issue with a few mobile users grabbing my wireless network until we start file sharing.

I have to chime in here about the Wi-Fi issue.

Do you people that think Wi-Fi is really THAT bad for gaming, have ever used a good router? While I do believe that the first choice is to have a hardwired Ethernet connection, for some people that just isn't possible, really. It isn't possible for them to cut holes in their walls and run cable from upstairs to downstairs, or to the other side of the house.

I have been using Wi-Fi for PC and PS3 gaming for quite some time, and it isn't as bad as you think it is, though Ethernet is the BEST way. Used to be a gamer on WON servers and Steam. Yes, I won't get the occasional lag spike, but, running Ethernet wasn't a option for me. I am even downstairs from my router and never had any issues in my PS3 gaming experience, and a big Socom player. I ask people sometimes if my voice is cutting in or out, or my character is jumping all over the place, and guess what, nope.

Yes, depending on the router and how far away you are from it, you will have a slight increase in latency, but it's something you most likely wouldn't even see. Wi-Fi technology is advancing, and it's getting a lot better, from a couple to a few years ago.

In my opinion, people that say Wi-Fi is HORRIBLE for gaming, are just being ignorant. Yes, there are downsides, but for some people, these downsides don't even matter, considering they don't have to run mass amount of cable and deface their house.
