Sony: “The environment where PlayStation wins is best for this industry”

Sony gives an unbiased, real talk opinion of the gaming industry… a very good read.

SCEA president Jack Tretton has said that one of the major advantages the PlayStation brand holds over its rivals is its ability to appeal to the masses on a worldwide basis.

The executive spent a chunk of a recent Forbes video interview contrasting his own company with Microsoft and Nintendo. He said that Sony is more profit driven than Microsoft in the short-term, suggesting that the Xbox maker “can afford to be more patient” when it comes to generating a return on investment.

He then argued that “Nintendo is almost the polar opposite”. For the Japanese firm, “features are nice” but “profitability is king and I think that is enviable”, he said, adding that Nintendo’s successful delivery of a “casual, youth-oriented entertainment experience” for 20 years now enables the company to “print money”.

“I think we like to see ourselves somewhere in the middle,” he said of Sony. “We don’t have unlimited money, we cater to a more mass market audience. I think we’re willing to take a little bit more risk than a competitor like Nintendo is and ultimately we deliver to the masses on a worldwide basis and that’s what we’ve done for the last 15 years.

“In an industry that’s certainly had its challenges this year, we like to say that the environment where PlayStation wins is best for this industry, because we have a brand that can play on a worldwide basis, young and old, male and female, where our competition tends to be relegated to either select regions or to select consumer audiences.”

Elsewhere in the interview Tretton said that the PS3 had enjoyed “skyrocketing sales” since the introduction of a price cut on September 1.

  1. Umm, who says? Oh that’s right, $ony. Well duh, why wouldn’t they since they have lost tons of money on the black monolith and ARE IN THIRD PLACE (dead last)! AND the PSP Go stopped before it ever began. Who the hell would want that when they can sell/trade the UMD discs for the PSP that was already out there.

  2. Pitiful, even by SDF’s “We have a barefoot Mexican doing video game reviews, on a cardboard set.” standards.

  3. Please delete all posts from ‘xbox360FTW’. He seems to have an agenda based on his name and posts. I don’t know what it is, but it’s obvious he’s not pulling his weight in the SDF 2.0 organization.

  4. It’s gonna be another sad Christmas for Sony.
Wii’s sales are on the rise, the Slim’s sales are falling. Go read the NPD for the ugly truth.

  5. An overpriced “features lump” that tries to succeed with style over substance (exact opposite of it’s extremely successful predecessor) winning would be best for the industry? No. That would be the industry’s death knell.

  6. Yeah, an inexpensive system that delivers fun to the widest audience possible. Now THERE is what’s best for the industry. And Nintendo has that cinched up, not Sony. PS3 Slim, it only does everything? Sure, but it does none of those things very well.
I’ll take a system that’s dedicated to games first, and bells and whistles second.

  7. http://www.gamespot.com/news/6232017.html And it would appear that environment Sony is talking about, just ain’t gonna happen! Lol!

  8. MS are releasing a handheld.

It comes with a free pair of oven gloves.

  9. Those Sony laptops could have used those…and home fire insurance.

  10. @No Vice

So does that mean that oven gloves will outsell the PSP also?

  11. So has anyone else played the demo for Brutal Legend? Mind you I’m not asking the kids amongst you, as you likely wouldn’t recognize enough of the music to appreciate the game.

Same ridiculous stories as I saw 5 months ago. Hi everyone.

  13. They’re more-so! Now they got some smelly Mexican giving “unbiased” video reviews.

  14. @Krakn3dfx

    FU

I have said nothing different than what everyone else has said. Go back to your mother’s basement!

Do I have an agenda, maybe. I have all three systems, and my 360 is used the most, then the wii. The POS3 is a great movie player, period. Other than LBP, there have been no games that we have wanted or needed.

So if I have an agenda, what is yours, to defend SDF? Sony? Give me a break. You have your opinion, I have mine. Don’t tread on me!

  15. Krakn’s agenda is to get some of Elpresador’s Mexicock up his ass. He wants to break off a piece of that!

  16. Go read some Famitsu, PS3 sales are faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalling.

  17. @Krakn3dfx

Do you really think that being biased on a site based on being biased is really all that big of a deal?

  18. I don’t see what makes SDF 1.5 any better than SDF classic. They post Sony Quotes as “Industry News”, Youtube videos of some homeless barefoot Mexican guy as “Game Reviews”, and bad photoshop smear campaigns against games that they are afraid of. Well they did get rid of that silly “Definitive Version” tag line.
That’s something, right? Seeing as half the time the “definitive” versions of stuff they get end up having stuff wrong with them.

I have played the the demo for Brutal Legend and how can I put this gently………. BEST FUCKING GAME TO BE BASED AROUND METAL EVER!!! Too say I’m excited about this game is a understatment, it could be possibly be GOTY for me!

  20. @InfaredChimera

Not that there have been many/enough games based around metal. But really as far as having really engaging game worlds Tim Shaffer is a freaking genius. To make a good metal game it really takes a careful balance of both respect and satire. I really think that this nails them both.

I had a good laugh at the facial expressions of the girl when Eddie was building the car. So far everyone seems to have a lot of personality. As opposed to say, Killzone 2, where it’s hard to remember who your player is or who the dude was who died.

Shame though that the character being done by the voice actor of Raz from Psychonauts died in the opening. The character was sorta annoying, but the voice actor is good.

I’m wondering just how many pills they had to pump Ozzy with to keep him on script.

  21. Ozzy probably thought it was real life…then bit off Jack Black’s head.

    @erik

Last friday Tim Schafer was on Jimmy Fallon promoting Brutal Legend. I don’t know about you but the people that seem too be most excited for Brutal Legend are metalheads.

“To make a good metal game it really takes a careful balance of both respect and satire. I really think that this nails them both.”
Too keep it short and sweet; Fuck yes it does. I haven’t had such a shit eating grin on my face about a game in a long time (probably since Psychonauts).

  23. good thing for the industry playstation has already won then

  24. @Trivium300

    The sales would disagree.
