Xbox Live to be $100 per year?

Xbox Live

According to Michael Pachter MS is expected to raise the price of XBL to $100 in the near future.  I’m not sure how MS thinks they can get away with this since PSN matches, and in some cases bests, XBL feature for feature and is still free on charge.  It will be interesting to see how this all shakes out.  Full quote and source below.

“Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter expects Microsoft to raise the price of Xbox Live Gold membership from the current $50 to $100 per year in the next few years.  “You can’t hook a guy into Xbox Live Gold if he’s playing on a PC,” Pachter said in a GTTV discussion talking about how Microsoft has seemingly given up on the PC gamer market. “that’s the other problem ‘ you really want to hook every gamer who has a 360, you want them to buy all their games on 360, play everything multiplayer, pay you 50 bucks a year so that, in a couple years, it’s a 100 bucks a year.”And that’s going up, we all know that ‘ it’s a profit deal,” he concluded.”

  1. And I would still prefer it over PSN.

  2. It’ll be interesting to see which kind of lame excuses the xbots can come to justify another greedy move by Microsoft. They now have a difficult time trying to explain why they pay to play online when nobody else does: PS3, Wii or PC.

  3. @erik

You are such a tool it’s not even funny.

  4. @xbotkiller

Because I prefer Live over PSN?

But no really, if you prefer PSN then keep on trucking. Your free service is very… quaint.

  5. And if anyone wants to try and say this is a greedy move by Microsoft perhaps they have forgotten about this: http://money.cnn.com/2006/05/08/technology/ps3_pricing/index.htm

  6. @erik

I’m partially with Erik on this one, but this would be a greedy as fuck move for Microsoft. Remember though, this did not come FROM Microsoft, but an analyst instead. They would really need to find a way to justify the double in price if they intend to keep people from jumping ship and grabbing a PS3/PS4 for online gaming. $50 is manageable with what they offer for it, but $100? Maybe if that included like a Netflix style service for games/movies. This is just speculation though. Also, “the next few years” is not “near future” in video game land. That’s a whole new generation of consoles…I personally don’t have an XBL Gold subscription since I’m a PC gamer for the most part. But I am considering getting a Live subscription when I buy Forza 3. The awesome marketplace may very well do it unless they let you use it with a Silver membership.

  7. Live won’t cost more than it have now. All because all the extra will be optional to users and that way they keep the gold-account quite cheap. In matter of fact i’m waiting MS to drop the price because they will add some sponsors and adverts to Live.

This might mean that with Silver account you can play free but you got adverts all over the interference and with upgrading to gold you get off those adverts. Same system might be coming to PSN also because Sony is now loosing a lot of money when they don’t have any good incomes in PSN.

  8. @wrtn

I’d like to see it work out that way…it would be suicide for them to raise the price. And if the start throwing in ads like they have been talking, the price of Live should drop accordingly. But that was also what the cable companies said back in the 70s. No commercials because you pay. Yeah, right…

I would also like for Microsoft to adopt Sony’s PSN Store system with the exact dollar value. I have definitely spent a LOT more money on PSN games than I have on XBLM games. Not even because of the selection which is awesome on both fronts, but because of the ease of making the transaction.

  9. Michael Pachter also gave us this golden quote.

“In 2010, Sony’s going to have 55%, Microsoft’s going to have 35% and Nintendo 10%, with all three of those having plus or minus 5%.”

Well, one out of three ain’t bad.

Umm, and you think that Sony is money grubbing because they released a $600 console? WOW, that is the worst logic I have heard in my life. Sony, up until the $299.99 price point, were losing hundreds of dollars per console, and probably still losing a bit, but not much. It was fact that when the PS3 first came out, that, all the parts in it, equaled around $1000.00, so you are really getting a deal. Go a head, keep your 360. I don’t have to worry about the RRoD, yes there is the YLOD, but, since I have had mine for about 2 years now, I don’t think I should have any problems. If you are a lucky one that hasn’t had to deal with Microsofts “Quality Control” or lack there of, then you are a lucky one,

The only sole reason I wouldn’t own a 360 is because of the failure rate, that’s it, it’s a great gaming machine, but I don’t want to have to worry about my system breaking down. Plus, why I chose it over the 360, is because I wanted a multimedia machine, and is well worth the extra money for it. I am already set for Blu-Ray, I get REAL 1080p gaming, though, as a PC gamer more than anything, been playing in “HD” for many years, before these “HD” consoles.

But, I am glad I don’t have to pay extra, on top of the Internet bill to play my online games. Plus, what does live REALLY have over the PSN now? Cross-game voice chat, though, the PS3 is getting that soon. Umm, can you really tell me anything else? Yes, in a year, it really isn’t that much money, but still, I get a great online experience for free, and happy with what I get. What do you want for nothin’?

I really don’t mind playing multiplayer games on PSN, but by all means its easier to get a game going on XBL than PSN anyday of the week. But there’s reasons why I’m buying Borderlands and MW2 on 360 over PS3 (friends, easier to find a game, and etc that I don’t have to elaborate on) and I’m not saying either of those games are going to better on one console or the other, but there is certain games on certain consoles that I perfer to play on over the other.

  12. I WON’T “PAY” for PLAY

  13. @Giban

There are some who share your opinion. Which would explain how Runescape has managed to tread water even though WoW is out there. But it doesn’t change the fact that WoW is very popular and that Blizzard is making money by the truckload.

  14. All I ever hear you talk about eriK, is money and sales. Sales doesn’t mean anything to the end-user. It’s a good game or not. And a lot of titles out there don’t have commercials running for them, or very minute. All I see are these stupid Halo: ODST, you don’t see any actual gameplay. Yes, Halo is the most sold shooter, but does that mean it’s the best, no, not by any means.

  15. @Telzon

Okay here is a fun game for you. Show me where I have ever said anything positive about Halo. No really go ahead. I fucking hate Halo. It is every bit as wretchedly boring as Killzone 2. So before you open your mouth, be sure whom you are talking to first.

  16. Wow, and I do know who I am talking to, someone who doesn’t really like the PS3, and, yet, is on this site more than anyone else. You post on every new topic they post on here. Plus, I wasn’t directing the Halo statement at you. You are not going to get a rise out of me because that is not the person I am, but guess since I am replying, you are a little. But, not sure what topic it was, but, you said pretty much “I don’t give a fuck about Demon Souls.” Ok, granted, it’s not your type of game. But, you can’t ignore the fact, that, it’s a great game. But, really, why do you enjoy your 360 over the PS3? Yes, there are more users on the 360, but, i’m sorry, I don’t want to be playing with 12 year olds everytime I get in to a game. And, LITERALLY, both consoles have the same games, besides some exclusives. But, I mainly play Socom Confrontation now, which beats every online shooter out there, despite it’s bugs. But, still like my FPSs, am a PC guy before anything.

But, you come off as someone who doesn’t actually like playing games, you like to size everything up and not enjoy anything, and come of as really arrogant. Have played a little of K2, and it’s not a bad game, same with Halo, all the Halos are fun to play, but it doesn’t bring anything new to the table, but not a bad game, regardless. Halo is like Counter-Strike, it’s the most played FPS on both platforms, don’t really bring anything, but both are extremely fun to play. I am just a gamer, something you don’t seem to be. I play games to have fun, and some of that fun is actually getting frustrated at hard parts in a game. I would really like to know the types of games you play. You don’t like Uncharted, apparently don’t like Halo, put Demon souls down, so, guessing you don’t like RPGs, you just seem to take a game for what it is, but, for what it’s not. All genres have ups and downs, but, a game is a game.

  17. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

    T4L

and WTF IS THIS AMD GARBAGE DOING HERE?!?

    AMD = ATI = XBOX = FAIL!

  18. @Telzon

There’s only one reason Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo make consoles. They need to make money. And sales can make a difference to the end-user. You see, the more people buy a game, the more money the developer makes, which means they can hire more staff, pay them more and upgrade their dev kits. Trying to entice the best staff, rewarding them for their abilities and giving them the best tools they can, they should be able to make a better game than they did earlier. The end product means a lot to the end-user.

    Also, @erik

What would be your favourite games of this generation?

  19. Wow, Imteheggman really is a troll.

AMD has dominated the PC market for a looooong time. Not so much anymore since the Core 2 Duos hit the shelves, but AMD should not be associated with Microsoft. ATI also appears to have the superior PC graphics chipsets this generation. And even in the console world, ATI’s graphics chipset on the 360 seems to be rendering games just as well as the nVidia chipset in the PS3. Most games look nearly identical.

WTF am I doing here? You’re just trolling. And I am responding to it? Damnit…

  20. @Telzon

“But, not sure what topic it was, but, you said pretty much “I don’t give a fuck about Demon Souls.” Ok, granted, it’s not your type of game. But, you can’t ignore the fact, that, it’s a great game.”

    I don’t know anything about Demon’s Souls. I don’t want to know about Demon’s Souls. I don’t give a fuck about Demon’s Souls.

“But, you can’t ignore the fact, that, it’s a great game.”

    I don’t give a fuck about Demon’s Souls.

I’ve played both of them. Both are overhyped pieces of shit. Halo is an overhyped game and Killzone 2 is an overhyped graphics demo.

“put Demon souls down, so, guessing you don’t like RPGs”

I’ve played all Final Fantasy games, beaten most of them. My most played games this generation would undoubtedly be Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Fallout 3. My favorite game of all time is Secret of Mana. I’m an hour or less from getting ready to go get Borderlands, a shooter with RPG elements. I have a respectable stack of pen and paper rpg books. I bought the remakes of the old school square games when they came out for the PS2. I’m planning on buying the box set of the old school Fallout games rather soon.

So I say again: Know who the fuck you are talking to.

“We are all gamers: PC, PS, Xbox, Wii, why can’t we all just get along? –Telzon”

    Fuck no.

    @Quinntan

“What would be your favourite games of this generation?”

I would have to say Fallout 3, Oblivion, Dead Rising, Half-Life 2, Bioshock, Little Big Planet, and InFamous.

  21. Okay so SDFailure still has the same insipid moderation as the supposedly previous version. So there are lots of other points that I commented on. But to keep things brief I’ll only do a few for now.

  22. LOL Buying into what PATCHER says?

  23. @tendonut

I’m not talking about you, I’m talking about that AMD ad I’ve seen yesterday on the site!

  24. Imeteheggman

The ads are random. Just because you see an ad doesn’t mean that we will see the same one. Your parents just let you start to use the internet eh?

  25. @erik

Relax m8. I was just fooling around. Do you really think I take this site and the whole “Trey Brotherhood” bullshit seriously?!

It’s just a site that was made by a bunch of insecure nerds who could only afford one console and worship it like a god. The shit they post is hilarious and the funniest part is, some people are actually serious!

I’m sorry if I upset you and @tendonut. I was just doing it for teh lulz xD

  26. @Imteheggman

There is a right way and wrong way to troll for “teh lulz”. The way you did it just left everyone scratching their heads, wondering just what the fuck you were going on about. Then when you revealed that you were yelling in response to an ad that you saw but likely not the rest of us, or at a time for it to be relevant the “teh lulz” were us laughing at you.

  27. Another customer satisfied ;)

  28. LOL @erik and Imteheggman (not the insulting way)

  29. I am done talking to you erik, you obviously aren’t a intelligent person, otherwise you wouldn’t be making some of the remarks you make. No, I didn’t know the games you played, that is also why I asked. I made an assumption, and I was wrong, I am sorry. But, considering you don’t think all gamers should get along, I don’t even know what to say to that. Apparently you think that just because we play on different platforms, we should be segregated, really?

Just remember people, this is the kind of person erik is:

“We are all gamers: PC, PS, Xbox, Wii, why can’t we all just get along? –Telzon”

    erik says: Fuck no.

    @Quinntan:

I do understand that sales can mean something to the end-user, but, strictly talking about JUST the game, you either like the game, or don’t like it, that is what I am meaning to the end-user. The company makes the game to their liking, and sometimes, some A titles are made by small companies. If a game sells well, then yes, they have some extra money for more employees, more time, etc. Also, was talking about how eriK threw the PS3 price point in our face, which doesn’t really mean anything. He was trying to make a point that Sony is money grubbing, but, all companies are money grubbing. Bu, Sony is actually giving you a deal with the PS3. If they wanted more money, they would have put the PS3 price point at $1000.00, because that is what it was worth. There is some other point I am trying to make, but can’t because eriK is so arrogant, and can’t even think strait.

We are all gamers: PC, PS, Xbox, Wii, why can’t we all just get along? –Telzon

  30. @Telzon

“But, considering you don’t think all gamers should get along, I don’t even know what to say to that.”

You should come to terms that not everyone is on the kumbaya, hippie, everyone-gets-along, circle jerk that you subscribe to.

“Apparently you think that just because we play on different platforms, we should be segregated, really? ”

Sounds good to me. If it means not having to have people trying to sell me on crap like Uncharted, Uncharted(either one), or Killzone 2 then sign me up for segregation.

Just remember what kind of person Telzon is:

Telzon says: “Hay guise! Lets play some Mario Galaxy, then some Halo 3, then some Uncharted 2! Then the circle jerk!”

“Telzon says: “Hay guise! Lets play some Mario Galaxy, then some Halo 3, then some Uncharted 2! Then the circle jerk!””

I’m game for all those games, well except for the circle jerk.
Also with you trying to tell us what kind of person he is with that last remark actually makes you look like a dick.

  32. @InfaredChimera

“Also with you trying to tell us what kind of person he is with that last remark actually makes you look like a dick.”

Good. Have I ever tried to come across as anything else? The better question is have you ever thought I was anything else?

  33. @ekiK:

Guess I am going to waste more time on you, but, I have come to terms, and have always known that some people will always stick to one platform, and don’t want to get a long with other people. Apparently you are not very intelligent because you can’t read in to my signature, because I have been putting it at the end of my post for a little bit now.

We are all gamers: PC, PS, Xbox, Wii, why can’t we all just get along? –Telzon

Because my signature implies that I know, that, not everyone is going to get a long. No one is perfect, life isn’t perfect, I learned that a long time ago.

  34. @InfaredChimera

Thank you man. Because, he does make himself look like an idiot. Glad there are some intelligent people on here.

We are all gamers: PC, PS, Xbox, Wii, why can’t we all just get along? –Telzon

  35. @Telzon

First of all, I don’t stick to just one console. So yet again you are wrong. That seems to happen to you a lot doesn’t it?

Secondly, I’m still going to make fun of your signature. It reeks of nausea inducing levels of positivity in that you wish for everyone here and all gamers of all consoles to have some kind of sick Barney and Friends friendship. So if I made a quote in the style of yours I would say:

Why the fuck would we want to get along?

  36. @Telzon

Also, you have a strange idea of just what intelligence is. As far as I can figure is that you equate intelligence with friendliness. So you think that I’m stupid on the basis that I don’t want to like you and I don’t want you to like me.

  37. @eriK:

I think you are more arrogant than anything. I don’t care what you think of me, nor do you care what I think of you. But, acting the way you do, does show some of your intelligence, maybe not book smart, but definitely on a level on how you handle yourself talking to people. Also, I know you own a PS3, but, all your comments point to you being on your 360 pretty much 100% of the time, which is fine. You like the 360 better, not putting you down for that. But, the fact that you have put down pretty much all the PS3 exclusives says something.

And yes, why can’t we get a long? We are all gamers, so why don’t you want to get along? Apparently you can’t put away your differences and see what you have in common with someone. But, again, I am not talking to a very intelligent person. I am done with you, because you are so hard headed, and don’t seem to like games anyway. So have a good day eriK, and hope you can find some happiness in games and life.

  38. @Telzon

“And yes, why can’t we get a long? We are all gamers, so why don’t you want to get along?”

I can’t think of many things that would be more revolting than getting along with you. If hating you and being hated by you makes me stupid, then I hope that I am the stupidest motherfucker to ever live. Is that clear enough for you?

  39. Um, having all three consoles, the best one is XBL, the worst is WII, but not much more so than PSN! Why? No one has headsets playing PSN games! I can count on one hand the number of times I was able to play PSN games and talk to another person! On XBL, it’s the norm, on WII…. forget Wii.

And I don’t know about you but I haven’t paid $50 for XBL since it came out! The most I have paid is $29. You can keep PSN, it sucks. You want free, you get free, SUCK!

XBL is THE standard this generation, the others are far behind!

  40. and xbox live has more to offer and $100 isnt that bad if you have to pay it ech year and if you dont got the money than buy 3 months subsripion another fail sdf
