Megaton: Netflix coming to PS3 for FREE

Even Netflix couldn’t ignore The Slim Effect™ and has no choice but to add their streaming services to Playstation 3 or face losing out on a huge chunk of revenue.

With this major bomb dropping, one has to wonder what the point is of paying for Xbox Lag anymore.

  1. LOL PWND!

  2. Another SDF lie. You still have to pay for a Netflix subscription. And as PS3 fanlosers hate paying for subscriptions, I don’t see this happening. They always ask “Why should I pay for Live when there is PSN”. So now they will ask “Why should I pay for Netflix when I have an 8″ black and white tv with a hanger hooked into the back.”

  3. Also SDF, your so called “unbiased reporting” is in question again. Just why did you use photo manipulation to shrink the size of the 360?

  4. Oh come on Erik, this is still pretty cool for those who do not want to pay for XBL. I always thought that moving a secondary subscription service behind an existing subscription service was lame as hell, especially when the existing subscription service has nothing to DO with the secondary. Its like charging me in advance for tolls for the NYS thruway system when I live in NC and am trying to take out a car loan.

I still haven’t signed up for a gold subscription (my online gaming is done on the PC), and this is awesome news for me. Then again, when I pick up Forza tomorrow, I may finally break down and sign up. I would also like to know if it will be the same service or some stripped down service for the PS3. I still have BB Online because they never took away my unlimited in-store rentals, but this may get me to change over to Netflix finally.

“Just why did you use photo manipulation to shrink the size of the 360?”

Yeah, that was pretty fucking lame, yet strangely funny.

  6. @tendonut

“Oh come on Erik, this is still pretty cool for those who do not want to pay for XBL.”

And a hanger connected to the back of a black and white tv is pretty cool for those who don’t want to pay for cable.

  7. @erik

That’s a bad comparison because a coat hanger on a black and white TV is a totally different experience than cable TV. This is cool for those who will get pretty much the exact same experience as XBL users have without the added cost of a Gold membership. I may or may not be part of that depending on if I sign up for Live or not. But it should also be noted that according to Netflix, it will require a streaming disc and not a software download, so it would be a bit more cumbersome than MS’s way of doing it.

A good comparison would have been a 27″ color TV with stolen cable compared to 27″ color TV with paid for cable. Same experience without the added cost.

  8. @tendonut

“That’s a bad comparison because a coat hanger on a black and white TV is a totally different experience than cable TV.”

Indeed it is a different experience. Which is why I’ll keep paying for my Live account thank you very much. As for my PS3, well that I’ll save for the experience of dust and rust.

  9. SDF 1.5, why is this a megaton when it won’t happen? The POS3 fabturds want everything for free right?

Even so, maybe the POS3 finally has something worthwhile for it’s owners.

  10. @erik

Well yeah, for you it wouldn’t make any sense to get excited about the PS3 thing. You already have an XBL subscription, so it makes no difference.

Want a good use for your PS3? Install Linux on it man. I just finished my Gentoo install on it..I was able to steal the vram and use it as high level swap, so its actually a pretty decent desktop.

  11. @tendonut

Why would I want to install linux or any other computer operating system on it?

  12. clap clap clap… lol… PS3 users… welcome to last year.

  13. @erik

So it doesn’t turn into an expensive paperweight? Unless you aren’t using it purely out of spite. That would be just plain silly. I figure, put it to use. Watch Youtube videos and shit with a real web browser on your TV when you are feeling extra lazy. It’s a great piece of hardware that is very capable for those who already own it. Those benefits may be overkill for a gaming machine, but if you try using it to its full potential, there are tons of things you can do with it.

  14. Xbox Lag, XLOL , first time I heard this word, excellent.

  15. @tendonut

Let me put it another way. Just what uses would installing an operating system on a PS3 have to make it worth the hassle?

  16. @erik
It basically becomes it’s own computer. If you have a decent TV, it may be nice to be able to use Firefox/Pidgin and such from your couch instead of your desk. because Flash works fairly well with PPC architecture for certain things, Hulu would work well just like it does on a computer. As long as you aren’t doing any processor/memory intensive activities, it could easily double as a second desktop. So with the exception of gaming, anything you do on a desktop can be done on the PS3 with a Linux distro installed. I don’t recommend Gentoo unless you really know what you are doing, but Fedora/OpenSUSE/Ubuntu have PS3 distros (It’s PPC64). It just an interesting project to work on I suppose.

  17. @erik

Also, it’s a LOT easier than one would think. Pop in a Ubuntu disc, go to Settings > System Settings > Install Other OS” in the XMB, then go to Settings > System Settings > Default OS > OtherOS. The LiveCD immediately boots and takes you through the simple Windows-esque install process. Sony practically endorses it. THEY created the bootloader that the PS3 uses to do exactly this.

  18. @tedonut

As I have a laptop and a desktop already, I don’t think that would be entirely useful to me.

  19. @erik

Yeah, probably not. It is still something cool to say you did. My laptop, an iBook G4,is a bit dated and is having some hardware issues. My desktop is awesome and has no issues (running Gentoo primarily, but dual-boots into Windows when I am playing a game other than WoW).

  20. @tendonut

I wouldn’t find it cool to say that I did. That reminds me of someone where who tried to say that the PC was the best gaming platform. My reply to that was that the hassle of upgrades and drivers, and directX bullshit negates any benefit from the platform. That in a console all you have to do is take it out of the box and shove a disc into it.

I was thinking about whoever that buffoon was about a month ago when I was on my living room floor while building a new PC with all the crap that goes along with that.

  21. @erik

If you don’t expect huge leaps and bounds in graphical performance in a 5 year span, then you could easily never update your system and just pop a few games in and keep the settings low. That’s exactly what a console does. The difference between a console and a PC is a console gets generational leaps every 5 years, while if you CHOOSE, a PC gradually improves constantly. Yes, you could buy a new $250 video card every year do make each game look totally cutting edge, or you could buy a $200 video card once and use it for 3-4 years and have the graphics pretty much stay the same and emulate the console experience. You don’t HAVE to play games on the highest setting. And the video card is the only thing that really needs to be replaced. Hell, my main hardware is an Athlon 64 X2 3800+ and 2GB PC3200 RAM running XP…built July 2006. My video card has only been replaced once and I went from a GeForce 7900GT (When it was $130) to a GeForce 8800GTS (when it was $150). My processor/memory won’t be replaced for a long time since it isn’t bottlenecking my card and I am still running the same DirectX version (9) since the original build. The drivers have been updated maybe once. It really isn’t that hard to do PC gaming nowadays. Only retards update their hardware once a year. It’s not necessary unless you want the absolute best looking gaming experience out there, which is WAY beyond this generation of consoles.

  22. @tendonut

It is still a pain in the ass. I prefer taking a system out of a box then not having to worry about anything after that. The PC has too many variables to make gaming on it anything except for frustrating.

  23. @tendonut

Well that’s because a PC is more than just a gaming system. If you want a PC for JUST gaming, then yeah, it’s probably not worth the hassle.

  24. @tendonut

I think you got that backwards. Without gaming there would definitely be worth the hassle. Without gaming I could get by on a ten year old laptop for general usage.

  25. What is this “Slim Effect” that Fox News keeps talking about?

  26. I’m wondering why SDF hasn’t put up a real screenshot of the Netflix page now that their photo manipulation has been more outted than it’s writers. You do want to be unbiased don’t you?

Once again: who gives a shit? – I don’t know ANYONE who would pay for this, when they can download from torrent sites at no charge.
    Fail again, SDF.

  28. @RainbowSeven

So what you are saying is akin to “Why would you buy a candy bar at a gas station when you can shoplift it?”

    @rainbowseven

Because not everyone thinks stealing is a good thing and don’t feel entitled to someones hardwork for free.

  30. And also the whole torrent thing is really a pain in the ass on top of the illegality thing. I just watched 3 episodes of Monty Python on Netflix on my 360. The episodes started, oh, a good 3 to 4 seconds after I clicked on it. I didn’t have to worry about downloads, or seeds, or any of that bullshit. So in the time it takes a person to find and download one ep, I’ve just had a few hours of entertainment.

But that’s what happens when you put forth money for a service.

    @erik

“But that’s what happens when you put forth money for a service.”
How dare some people actually pay for a good thing each month, I can’t fathom why some would actually do that -end sarcasm-.

  32. I can watch Netflix on my TV any time I want! It’s called running a video cable from my PC to my TV.

  33. RainbowSeven Says:
    October 29th, 2009 at 10:01 am

    @erik/Infrared

I understand what you’re saying, but you are looking at it from a North American perspective. – Where I live, we don’t get NetFlix, or half of the other stuff available to U.S. 360/PS3 owners. And tv here is utter, utter shit. So we have no choice BUT to download shows that we want to watch, otherwise we’d never see them.

BTW, I do pay for them, because I belong to a subscription site.

  34. @RainbowSeven

You still have a choice. You aren’t forced into theft.

Also you initial comment said that you don’t know anyone who would pay for it. That sort of denotes that the people you know DO have a choice of a service but actively instead choose to steal, and doing so resign themselves to an annoying and substandard experience.

  35. RainbowSeven Says:
    October 30th, 2009 at 6:31 am

    @ erik

You can’t steal something that doesn’t exist. – If those shows were actually available, some people might pay for them. But most wouldn’t. And I bet you and your lover InfraRed have download something at least once, so don’t be hypocrites.

  36. @RainbowSeven

So if these shows don’t exist then how do you go about stealing them? What is the size of a nonexistent file? Or are you just making more excuses to try and make yourself feel better about your theft?

And you still have not made any excuses yet that compensate for your original statement of “Why buy something when you can steal it?”

And yes, I have downloaded things illegally. But unlike you I do not try to justify it.

So for you to talk down on services such as Netflix because they aren’t theft, what the fuck is wrong with you?

  37. RainbowSeven Says:

    @ erik

“So if these shows don’t exist then how do you go about stealing them?”

They don’t show them where I live, which, for all practical purposes, means they don’t exist here.

And my original point STILL stands: most people will not pay for things that they can get free.

  38. “And my original point STILL stands: most people will not pay for things that they can get free.”

Were that true there would not be these things called stores, as they would go out of business after being ransacked on the first day.
