Nintendo President: “We failed with the Wii”

wii FAIL

Nintendo’s earnings report today showed the first drop in profits the company has seen in four years. For the six month period ending September 30, the Kyoto giant’s operating income fell 58.6% from the same period last year to 104.3 billion yen. The Wii platform took a major hit, its sales falling 43% from last year to 5.75 million units. Nintendo ended up lowering its Wii sales forecasts for the full year from 26 million units to 20 million units.

Mainichi Shimbun reports that Iwata, speaking at a press conference in Osaka today, said “We failed with the Wii. We were unable to continually release strong software, and let the nice mood cool.”

Sankei Shimbun, covering the same press conference, reported Iwata as having said “We were unable to show a new game to become ‘the next thing.’ In the game market, once you’ve lost the momentum, it takes time to recover.”

It does seem that Iwata has a positive outlook for the Wii, though, thanks to the September price drop. According to a Reuters report from the press conference, Iwata said of the decision to lower Wii’s sales targets, “With the price drop, sales returned to a certain level, but they just did not reach the level of last year around this time. We decided that it would be difficult to sell enough to recover from the poor performance of the first half of the year.” On the new 20 million target, he said, “In order to reach it, we’ll have to move quite a large quantity, but it’s a figure we released after having felt the momentum returning [based off the price drop].”

The Slim Effect™ has taken hold worldwide and now even Nintendo is admitting defeat.  Very interesting turn of events…  expect SDF to dive deeper into this in the coming weeks.

  1. Fail my ASS! Yes, no good games have come out in like 6 months, but good lord the system has sold well. They could essentially stop selling systems for a year and still not lose their #1 spot. They don’t REALLY care about not having good software. They just want hardware sales. And they have won that.

  2. Failed all the way to the bank. How many times over has the Wii outsold the P$3? Two times over? Three times over? If the Wii is a failure then that means that the P$3 is so sad a waste that it cannot even be considered an attempt, let alone even good enough to be called a failure.

And what do the shills at Sony have? A new shape for their brick turd of a system. The Slim effect of shoving your finger down your throat.

What sad biased little cretins you SDF fools are.

“Failed all the way to the bank”

    I LOL’ed. Very well put.

  4. Once again the Fox New’s Gaming site aka SDF quotes “choice” parts of a story, taking it out of context.

Over 56 million Wiis sold vs PS3s 25 million sold…failed indeed. So if the Wii failed, then that means that the PS3 has ROYALLY failed then. Care to comment on that, SDF?

  5. its really funny how this is a ps3 site and only xbots comment here lol.

That is because it is easier to rebuke SDF’s claims rather than try to defend them. With this ease there are no shortage of people who both can and want to disprove SDF’s claims. The difficulty on the other hand of proving them cuts that number down, as now we are getting into the grounds that any random person is sufficient.

  7. Fail… yeah right… have faith SDF…

Yep, Nintendo failed: they’ve sold a Wii to every single person on Earth who can afford one, and have reached the point of market saturation….failure indeed…NOT.

  9. @mich
No it’s funny that none of the Fox News/SDF staff ever defend their stories.

  10. @everyone who posted a response.

as crazy as this sounds i agree with SDF about the wii failing. not in the context they said but the console is a epic failure to gamers. i dont care about game or console sales. leave that to shareholders. They are the only ones that should care (well maybe you sick little fanboys, i guess it makes you sleep at night better.) For 6 months now there has not been one single game on the wii that is worth playing more than any game on the 360 or ps3. Hell nintendo went out of their way to royally piss me off by stating that the new zelda will be more gimped noob friendly, no kid icarus for now we have to finish wii sports resort vacation blast 2. There is less worth playing on the wii than the gamecube!

  11. Spooky, never lump gamers into one group.
It pisses the ones off who pre-date the term “gamer”.

I do agree with you in that sense. And i’m a huge Nintendo fan (look at my handle. Tendonut. as in NINtendo nut). I really haven’t booted up my 360 in ages..maybe a while when I rented Conduit, but other then that, nothing. I’ve been playing Blue Dragon, then went right into Lost Odyssey, and now Forza 3 for my 360, and the PS3 has been all about Resident Evil 5, bringing back LittleBigPlanet and recently installed Gentoo (Linux). I really haven’t been gaming that much on the consoles lately..But the Wii? Yeah..nothing really. But they aren’t trying to please us real gamers. They want the casuals.

  13. “I really haven’t booted up my 360 in age” I meant the Wii.

The only thing my Wii is used for is a over priced emulator.

  15. If the PS3 “only does everything” I guess that means it also sucks and fails too.

  16. SDF I demand an answer from you. If you’re really this “hard hitting journalist team” that you claim to be, then you will have no problem answering me! If the Wii is such a failure, what does that make the PS3 seeing as the Wii’s sales has the PS3′s sales beaten by a ratio of OVER 2:1? Well?

  17. I’m calling it! SDF admits defeat.

  18. fail my ass the wii is fun but in my opinion the ps3 is more fun but the wii out sells the ps3 and is in first place while ps3 is in 3rd and xbox 360 is in second

  19. but i like xbox 360 the best
