Recently Toshiba decided to opt out of the high definition market when they put their A2 line of HD-DOA players on clearance throughout walmarts across the country. This lead other retail outlets such as Best Buy and Circuit City to start selling the HD-DOA player at clearance prices as well in order to clear out inventory for DVD’s true successor, Blu-Ray.
While it’s not surprising to see Toshiba release their players at a clearance price, SDF did not expect the decision to come so soon. Perhaps after the news that Transformers did nothing to stimulate interest in the dying HD-DOA brand, they felt hopeless up against the release of Spider man 1, Spiderman 2, Spiderman 3, Ratatouille, Cars, Pixar’s Short Film Collection, the Die Hard series, and Pirates 3.
With the remaining HD-DOA players leaving the shelves, this will allow retailers to clear up valuable space for Blu-Ray players and the extensive Blu-Ray software lineup. This act of desperation on behalf of Toshiba only spells immediate doom for the already dead and dying format.
Luckily, consumers are smarter than to pick up HD-DOA players at anything more than the prices they’re now being offered at. Nobody in their right mind wants to be stuck with an inferior stop-gap format that can only support 30 GB discs, 36 Mbs, and feature weak studio support. Playstation 3 will steamroll the competition this season with their competitive $399 SKU and will provide consumers the only true way of playing movies that feature: 1080p, 7.1 lossless, 50 GB discs, 54 Mbs, and a stellar lineup of movies.

Don’t say we didn’t warn you. It seems the developer of Assassin’s Creed is having trouble squeezing in all the game data onto a DVD. It looks like PS3 fans score another victory with yet another superior 3rd party port. I wonder what features they’ll have to cut out to get the game on the DVD? Will the 360 version run in sub-HD resolutions like Halo 3 and other 360 titles?
The game’s creative director, Patrice Desilets, told Pro-G in an interview that one of the biggest challenges the team is currently facing is fitting everything into a 360 DVD disc compared with Sony’s Blu-ray format.
[...]
“Right now we have a big challenge on the 360 to make it fit on a DVD, to put five languages, to put all the data on eight gigs. On the Blu-ray side we’re really good, but then the memory is quite different. “

Some new and interesting details about Rockstar’s much hyped LA Noire have recently been leaked out. It seems LA Noire is exclusive to PS3 by default seeing as how it’s impossible to put on the Xbox 360. Looks like the Blu-ray drive isn’t as pointless as MS F.U.D. would have you believe. More on this breaking news as we receive it.
More details:
* The game will be a free-roaming title with a historically-accurate recreation of Los Angeles in 1947.
* Team Bondi has even hired a costume designer to research the clothing of the era so the game’s attire can be accurate.
* Aside from main story, side missions will be based on actual cases pulled straight of the newspapers of 1947.
* A US Marine plays a big role in the story.
* Not so exclusive…but LA Noire definitely ain’t coming to Xbox 360, the size of the game is an obstacle to this.

According to the November 2007 issue # 76 of the Official Xbox Magazine, Sony has secured the next Grand Theft Auto, which would be number 7 in the series, to be a true exclusive to the PlayStation 3.
Clearly Rockstar were fed up with the limitations of the 360 GPU, CPU last gen DVD media, and lack of standard HDD.
No doubt GTA Next will make GTAIV look like a Dreamcast game now that Rockstar can fully harness the power of PS3.
Welcome home GTA.
GTA 1 – 1
GTA 2 – 2
GTA 3 – 3
GTA Vice city – 4
GTA San andreas – 5
GTA 4 – 6
Sony’s exclusive GTA – 7

Rush Hour 3, the summer’s biggest action-comedy that grossed over 200 million worldwide, will be a Blu-ray exclusive for 2007. The HD-DVD counterpart will be released at an unknown time in 2008, assuming HD-DVD stays around that long.
Technical Specs:
Video: 2.35:1 1080p
Audio: 6.1 DTS
Extras: Commentary, deleted scenes, production featurette, gag reel, trailer, and exclusive to the Blu-ray release enhanced visual commentary.
HD-DVD owners can still watch Rush Hour 3 this year, but on the low resolution DVD format and without the enhanced visual commentary.

Flash back 10 years ago. Final Fantasy VII was released on the Playstation and spanned 3 discs. The game was great but the multiple discs quickly became annoying. Then 2 years later Final Fantasy VIII weighed in at 4 discs. Thankfully, the Playstation 2′s use of DVD technology did away with having to fumble through multiple discs. Now that Sony has blessed all the Playstation 3s with Blu-ray technology there is no need to worry about multiple disc games and developers now have peace of mind when creating games for the Playstation 3.
Unfortunately for the other camp the picture isn’t quite as rosy.
What happens when you mix 12 year old DVD technology with hardware (360) just over a year old? We’re seeing the results today. Just over a year into the 360′s life and we’re already seeing games span 4 discs (Lost Odyssey) and 3 discs (Blue Dragon/Halo 3). That can be quite the headache for developers and gamers alike. This concerned gamer doesn’t think it’s too far-fetched to believe we might see 360 games appear on multiple DVDs that number into the double digits before its all said and done.
