Dirt declared better on the PS3 than the Xbox 360.

Dirt PS3

It’s about time that multiplatform developers took advantage of the power of the CELL and Blu-ray. In the inferior Xbox 360 version, Dirt was said to have a lot of frame rate issues that made it drop well below the advertised 30 frames per second. With the technological break through that is Cell, Codemaster version was graphically superior with no noticeable hitches in frame rate. The PS3 version also showed a major improvement in sound quality over the Xbox 360 version possibly due to the superior audio capabilities in the PS3. With the one year head start for the Xbox 360, one might think that the Xbox 360 port would be better but this goes to show the true power of the PS3 and is a sign of things to come.

In a surprise announcement considering their sister company Warner was a main proponent of HD-DVD, New Line has announced that their future HD titles (which includes such titles as Lord of the Rings, Blade etc) will be exclusive to Blu-Ray with a cut down HD-DVD edition later.

New Line titles will be released the same day on both standard DVD and Blu-ray Disc, with a lag for the HD DVD version

Never fear 360 owners – you can still enjoy the low res DVD versions which will hit at the same time as the 1080p HD Blu-Ray versions.

Among the innovations are two BD-Java enhancements not-yet-seen on Fox high-def title: a Search function, indexing all of each disc’s contents, as well as the Personal Scene Selections bookmark feature. In addition, each title will feature a BD-J interactive game (“Fly Zapper” on ‘The Fly,’ “Global Warming Interactive” on ‘Tomorrow’), while ‘The Fly’ will also boast a pop-up trivia track.

‘The Fly’ is even more extensive, sporting by far the most supplements ever seen on a Fox Blu-ray disc. The virtual encyclopedia of material includes an audio commentary with Cronenberg, the four-part “Fear of the Flesh” documentary, twenty additional making-of vignettes, deleted and extended scenes, eight still galleries, a complete Trailer and TV spot gallery, plus a text-based archive containing reviews, essays, storyboards and the film’s complete original screenplay.

Given the wealth of content included, it should come as no surprise that both releases are set to hit Blu-ray on BD-50 dual-layer discs. Other tech specs for both titles include 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video and DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 surround tracks.

In summary:

-Blu Ray Disc Exclusive
-Most bonus features ever on an HD mvoie
-50 GB disc
-AVC encoding
-54 mbps bitrate
-Lossless Audio

September 7th, 2007 m0dus

…or it should have if the format had any viable future.

A dry spell for Blu-Ray left the door wide open for HD-DVD to take the sales lead this week – especially with the massive release of Heroes on HD-DVD.

So take a look at the figures and see what actually happened:

I think it’s about time we renamed HD-DVD to HD-DOA don’t you?

Harry Potter Coming to 360 HD-DVD…on 2 Discs with Intermission

September 5th, 2007 m0dus

intermission-time.jpg

One of the biggest Hi-Def releases of the year is coming to HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix will be released on DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray simultaneously. In yet another victory for Blu-Ray, HD-DVD struggles to fit the movie on one disc having to span it over two with an intermission. Not only that – the lossless audio which is present on the one disc Blu-Ray edition has also had to be removed from the HD-DVD edition.

- HD DVD version is 2 disc set with DD+ Audio only and intermission.
- Blu Ray version includes Audio DD+ and PCM (English). Order of the Phoenix to be single-disc but include same contents as DVD and HD DVD.

What does this mean for the overall quality of the video and audio on the HD-DVD edition? The term bit-rate starved comes to mind. If you want the best video and audio fidelity for your HD experience then stick to the PS3 Blu-Ray edition of Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix.

Thankfully 360 owners will be used to swapping game discs by the end of this generation so I’m sure they won’t mind doing the same for movies.

Heavenly Sword audio alone takes up more room than a 360 DVD can hold

August 29th, 2007 m0dus

No wonder MS passed up on this AAA title – they knew that with Ninja Theory’s next gen vision there is no way that 360′s limited 7.2GB DVD capacity could keep up.Good choice by MS PR – bad choice for 360 gamers.

Chief designer says Heavenly Sword has completely filled Sony’s 25GB disc

It was Sony’s decision to include its high-capacity Blu-Ray disc format in PS3 that has been attributed with driving up the price of the machine – so Sony will be delighted that yet another industry voice has spoken out in praise of the format.

Nina Kristensen, chief designer at Heavenly sword developer Ninja Theory, has said that the studio’s upcoming PS3 title has completely filled Sony’s 25GB disc – with the audio alone taking up more room than the total storage capacity on Microsoft’s dual-layer DVD.

CVG quotes Kristensen as claiming: “We have jam-packed the Blu-Ray disc absolutely full.

We used compression all over the place. We had to be really judicious at the end with what was going on the disc and what wasn’t.

“I think it’s one of those things – if you give us the space we’re going to fill it with stuff. It means the audio can be of a higher quality and stuff like that. It all adds to the quality of the package.”

The claims come not long after Bizarre Creations intimated that it has had to be frugal with its content for upcoming racer Project Gotham Racing 4 on 360 as a result of DVD’s limited storage capacity – though these statements were later retracted.

Michael Bay to Paramount: No Transformers 2 for me!

August 21st, 2007 BennyB

No Transformers 2

I want people to see my movies in the best formats possible. For them to deny people who have Blu-ray sucks! They were progressive by having two formats. No Transformers 2 for me!

It looks like Bay will be a Blu-ray supporter as well.  So much for the HD-DVD comeback.
